I'd like a car called a WATARU, i'd tell the lot in my office that it was a water-powered subaru invented by a scientist in Japan and that mine was the only one in the world.
I agree that the front end looks a bit bizarre with its big low overhang and that. The rear end loks great though, much better than the mazda styling. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with it cos I reckon you could have a supa nice looking motor if youre handy with the GRP.

On a side note, I have just done a deal to get the wheels this car deserves... actually a bit bigger than I wanted, but they will possibly help decide the way this car will go. Mmm... Wat's for the Wat, good call

OK, so we had a great, if long day stripping bit offf the Wataru and the S Special, and doing random tech day bits & pieces on 5 or 6 other cars... seats swapped, hoods replaced, power steering fixed, an airbag steering wheel change to non airbag, suspension stripped etc... but the important bit for me was to get the front off the Wataru and the engine out! I counted 17 MX5s over the course of the day, and 11 at one time (lunchtime, the promise of Pizza is a great motivator) So here's the day from my viewpoint... some big gaps as I seemed to be talking / messing with cars most of the day but I got a few. Preparing the Wataru.. bonnet off And store the front clamshell somewhere safe... who knows when this will make it back onto a car... With no clothes on... much better access to the engine though!! People beginning to turn up... view from the garage roof And the two cars being stripped Ummmm yes, I guess thats one way to do it? Taking the strain for the lift Quick, everyone look busy.. someones got a camera out At this point everyone was feeling sorry for the poor ickle car stuck in the corner with no one to talk to, so they decided to hold its hand for a bit And then take it for a nice romantic stroll down the drive Engine heading off to a new home Bye bye carpet (sniff) I'll always remmber the good times we had... (apologies if you don't get this... its a long story!) So the front is off the Wataru and the back needs to get removed next...guess I'd best learn how to weld sharpish then! The current plan is to strip the rest of the Wataru (doors, hood, rear suspension, interior) as quickly as possible so I can weigh the rest of the car in for scrap... this gains me a space on the drive to buy (yet) another car and start the transformation to Wataru... although this time I will be buying a fully working intact car rather than one thats cheap... it will cost more, but saves hassle! I will transfer over the back end and repair that (a weekends work?), so I can use the car while the front end is gradually being fixed up. This avoids any comments from my wife about cars sat on the drive doing nothing!! Russell.

A lot of Lotus Elite/Elan influences in the body kit. It would look better with a shorther nose and/or more recessed head lights.
Wheel choice is inspiring!

A lot of Lotus Elite/Elan influences in the body kit. It would look better with a shorther nose and/or more recessed head lights. Wish I could do this, but the engine is too tall and to get a gentle slope it has to be this long. Taking off the front bumpers does help the shape though, makes it look shorter than it is. Wheel choice will probably change, those Wats are too expensive and are not really true to what this car is trying to be. The Japs were trying to copy an old english car, so I might fit the english wheels Watanabe were copying... Minilites. Have found some in 15 x 8.5 ET0 so will still get the same look, I'm just not sure if the car wll look right with a load of dish!! It is meant to be a classic styled car, so I probably ought to buy some 13 x 5 steels, but... Russell.

I've seen a few PCR cars, but this is completely new for me! There doesn't seem to be much Wataru left up front, how are you going to rebuild it? Have you moulds or plans, or just buckets of talent? <wanders off to CR.net for a read…> Ah, talent it is, then!

Ha ha, thanks for the vote of confidence but what I have is buckets of enthusiasm.. and not quite enough intelligence to work out that this is way beyond my skills. I'm hoping that by the time my head has overcome my heart, I will be too far in and may as well finish it off...
I also have quite a few friends with some really good mechanical skills... although none with fibreglassing skills... oh well!!
Russell.

OK, so I accidentally bought another MX5... so that brings it up to 4 at the moment... oh, and later the same weekend I accidentally bought a Mazda RX7 FC turbo II convertible... not much space on the drive for visitors now... The MX5 is a Mazdaspeed Spec B supercharged model, not in the best of health but it is the only car I own (out of about 7 or 8) that actually works and is on the road... I say works and is on the road... the key fob for the alarm was cracked and coming apart so I managed to buy a new one via Ebay... and now the immobiliser won't unset so it won't start... Here it is at home with its rather sorry looking drivemates and quite a few changes made already... new wheels, shorty aerial, ditched the style bar in favour of a Mazdaspeed Roll bar and lost the Lexus lights / some of the chrome bits... also ditched all the chavvy interior bits and about 50kg (I amnot exagerating!!) of ICE on the back shelf and in the boot! Also added my "5" on to the car .. this is a vented headlight cover I customised for my first ever MX5 which was silver... needs finishing properly, but it kind of puts my stamp on the car!! 8) And the roll bar... needs fixing in properly, but looks a bit lore useful than the neck snapper that was on there before!! The FC has been in a light front end crash, been partially stripped and has then sat in someones garden for 2 years... I'll get it next week and see what the hell I have just bought... ? Carefully stored as you can see... why the hell would they fold down a perfectly watertight hood, and then cover the car with a tarpaulin to keep the rain out? Apparently he had heard they store better folded up... So why is any of this relevant to the Wataru? Well here we have 2 directions in which the Wataru could go... Supercharged MX5 or a transplant with a rotary turbo engine... both around 200bhp, so good for some giggles...the rotary engine ran fine before it was taken out, so should be good to go with a freshen up.. and the supercharged one is a running project, so the body could just be slotted on!! So which way to go? Russell.
