Today saw the car get 100% raped of all usefull parts (well, exluding the gallon or so of diesel in the tank)
First things first, finish getting that damned engine out! Now, all I have for lifting duties atm, is actually a body-hoist, meant for an old peoples home - max lifting weight of 140kg. The XUD11 engine, is only about 15kg below than that, and the auto box weighs an absolute ton. I'm definately going to need a PROPER crane next week to take the Essex lump and gearbox out! (170kg just for the engine! Easily another 50kg for the cast-iron gearbox)
Now, onto one of my favourite tools (after the grinder of course)
a sabresaw - essentially a jigsaw on steroids! As it can do things like this with ease:
Now you see it
now you don't!
Now there was a vague chance of me getting the engine out with the limited lift range of my lil hoist. A total of two hours after starting, it was out!
After a bit of faffing, I seperated the slushmatic gearbox - weighs an absolute ton! Easily about 20kg more than a manual'box!
Now, I couldn't move the engine very far, as leaked oil/etc, had made the ground VERY soft, and the wheels were just digging into the ground. So, I cheated, and brought the workshop to the engine!
I needed to get the torque convertor and the flex-plate off the engine, to make way for the 1.9 flywheel - this was an absolute PITA to do! VERY low profile bolts, sunk-in, and no access to them either! Eventualy found a ratchet spanner with a slight extension on the face that let me unbolt it
weirdly enough, the pilot bearing on the slushmatic, is just a plastic bush, but is the exact same size as the LDV jobbie. But at least the LDV verson is a needle-bearing type, so I swapped it anyway
Just to make sure, I tried the XM starter, on the LDV gearbox
One bolt will need a slight spacer on it mind you,but otherwise, perfect!
The next logical step, was to offer up the gearbox, and make sure the mounts all lined-up
Now a comparison on the standard turbo, next to the possible donor Frontera 2.8L turbo - turns out the standard turbo is actually a garrett of some description!
With all the engine stuff sorted, I turned my eye to raping all the other useful parts off the car!
Steering column, with height and length adjustment, seats with electric adjustment (too wide to fit my car though, which was a shame) the stalk controls, and the fusebox with lots of cable!
From the exterior, I took a few more parts:
the washer jets - looks like they'v got built-in heaters, so would be VERY handy in the winter! Need to check that mind you.. for all I know, they could just be ANOTHER sensor! This car is absolutely littered with sensors - even a throttle sensor, on a 100% mechanical fuelpump (??)
I can finally get rid of that bloody aincient wiper setup, that only has about 1/2 of it's original movement left, as every part just wears away! Obviously, the linkage for the passenger side will need to be shortened quite a bit, as well as the wiper arms. But it's all just steel, so nice and easy!
Nabbed the exhaust, as it's always easier to use pre-made bends. But thid one looks virtually new? Must have only been fitted a few months before being laid-up??
I even took the fuel lines from under the car, as it saves me buying new stuff to use! Once again, in brilliant condition??
The other half is coming over for a week, so I've promised her a few days of attention, lol so I hadto make the engine waterproof, just in case it rains in the next few days:
A fair bit of cling-film! After this pic, I actually wrapped up the hoist too, leaving it there for added support, as the table was designed to hold the weight of childrens books, and maybe something for show and tell.... Not exactly a 125Kg engine!
In case you're wondering, the windscreen's been painted red, as the sun was shining ridiculously hard today, and doing that made it a bit easier to see the electrics without being blinded! Plus it was fun to vandalise it a bit, lol
