Only a quick warning, but according to my dad the latest trick thieves are using is to stick a mobile phone in a magnetic based box (couple of quid from magic shops) which they're then fastening underneath cars they want to steal, then tracking them to where they are stored so they can be stolen.
Hopefully it won't affect anybody but thought it was worth a mention if you own something valuable.

So instead of fitting an expensive tracker system to your car just hide a mobile phone up in it and keep it charged

So how do they track the phone? I know the police and phone companies can find out a rough area that the phone is active in but its hardly precise and surely its not info that's open to the public?

My GPS is flaky at best unless I put it 'line of sight' in the windscreen to get satellite lock. Under a car would mean the signal penetrating several layers of metal and other material.

Reminds me of one I heard ages ago, some thing like thieves were going around car parks and using their mobile phones blue tooth to pick up phones/sat navs that had been left in cars. When you think about it this would in no way help them, they would only know that there was one in a car within some thing like a 40ft radius, how is that going to help them? Also if this trick is being used and works then how do people know that this was how the thief found their car? It's not like there would be any evidence of it, unless the police have found an increase in suspected car thieves carrying joke shop magnetic boxes in their 'theft kits'

There was a spate of fake car parkers at one time apparently, they would offer to park the car at venues, press the "home" button on your sat nav and go burgle your house.

imagine sitting at home watching wheel of fortune when some smart burglar breaks after you've borrowed your mate your sat nav to get to a gig

My dad works for the police he had to photograph the aftermath of a raid on the house of a known car theif. They found 30 boxes and 30 unregistered payg phones. Obviously the guy kept shtum about what they were for but from a few contacts they found out. They use them to find the car, then either sneak in and nick the keys, or knock on the door then 'persuade' the owner to give the keys to them.

Does sound like a 'bloke down the pub' story though, like the one where they'd leave a note under your rear wiper, and when you hopped out to get it, nick your car... I can't see anyone going to such trouble to nick any of the things we drive though!
