After selling this and as a stop gap buying a nice 87 RX7 Fc in the uk last year and getting the Rotary bug, I ve recently moved to oz and decided to hunt down an RX3 or Rx4 project... After realising that RX3' s in oz are at a huge premium and cars and parts are ridculously expensive, I ve been on the trail for and RX4 coupe and recenlt found one locally which was once a show car with a 13b turbo, but engine has been removed, paint stripped and currently fitted with an unfinished 12a Bridgeported motor, 5 sp RX7 box and LSD. Car is the most solid I ve ever come across for an 37 year old J car but engine is incomplete so I ve yet to discover if the freshly built motor is any good! Fair bit of work to do... but I like a challenge! ;D

After a bit of cleaning up, the rear end of my car is starting to take shape :-) From this.... To this..

Monroe gas shocks fitted... Full set of polished hotwires acquired with slicks! Top image is polished, bottom is spare rear. Bonnet removed for engine work! Trial fitting my vintage 2.5" racing beat rear muffler! Don't want my rotor over heating... so installing twin davies craig thermo fans and a series 2 rx7 rad! Quick trial fit... all good except need to fabricate some mounting brackets as just slightly to wide for original holes. Replacement boot lid fitted.. in need of a good clean though!

Wow- I'm figuring that you are originally English (apart from you already stating that you have just moved to OZ) The reason I figure your English is due to the fact that you have not fitted big ugly wheels to your old car like soooooo many Aussies and Kiwis do. Top work- hotwires suit these cars so well. Your car will look great with them on. Yep RX3s are top money over this way now eh! I bet the Aussies you speak to there are stunned at how cheap old RX7s are in the UK. I cant wait to go back and pick up a cheap FB.

Never had hotwires before and thought they were pretty cool! Only big modern wheels I don't mind are the 17" simmons five spokes but they have been done to death on rx3/4's and I much prefer jdm/old school looks Did consider trying to restire the 14" SSR's seen in the other pics... can see them with a black centre and a chrome rim but there just not dished enough for my liking I think we may have met once upon a time a couple of years ago at sushi sunday/breakfast club at Goodwood... I believe you had a blue rx3 coupe that had a truck load of work done to it, parked next to a red rx3 sedan and an FB? I ve got a pic somewhere... Hang on Blue one yours? Was at Rotomotion earlier in the week and was stunned to be told an rx4 bonnet is worth $1000 and and an rx3 steering wheel $500! They had an RX3 sedan in for wrecking with a smashed front that they had just paid $5k for! I ve decided that the rotary here is what the escort is in the UK in terms of prices! Even the FC I had I the uK which cost me £700 is worth $5/6K here!

Yeah thats my old Rx3. The Kiwi fella who bought it off me has exported it to NZ. Its having to have a lot of my repair work redone as the NZ importation rules are hard on welding repairs! Like they don't like repairs to sills and want to only see welding done by 'professionals'. That car was solid and filled to the brim with wax so it would remain so with the amount of salt used in the UK. Oh well. Yeah we had a mint completely rust free black series 3 rx7 in the UK- our first rotary. It only cost 600 quid!!! Here in NZ it would be worth 5000 quid or more as it was truly mint and all original. Original cars are hard to find here now. I think I may have to get another cheap FB. It costs quite a bit to ship to nz though. I would also love to get a Lancia Fulvia or Alfa junior as they cost loads here! But again its the frieght.
Which car were you in at sushi sunday?

I remember when I went to NZ the WOF was every 6 months and quite strict! I had a 1980 Toyota Town Ace van back then (2003!) and lived in it in the NZ winter... it was bloody freezing lol!
I can't remember which car I was in as I went twice, first time was in my 74' Datsun 160J SSS ( top of thread) and second time we came down in my mates 2003 Toyota Celica 190 Tsport. Can't recall exactly when the pics were taken.

So what happened to the ssr's? 3 are in my back yard, the fourth is stripped to see how easy it would be to get the bent rim straightened out, but for now the hotwires are king!

wof tests are really odd. They will fail a car now if the rear shelf has been cut to fit big speakers! You have to get an engineer to certify it. Crazy. Yet you are allowed to have split steering rack boots or ball joint rubbers. Then a spot of rot near a boot hinge is a fail. No emissions testing yet though.

The Aussie climate can be alot easier on j cars. My 323 wagon only has one bit of rust in it and it's 33 years old!
Ive wanted to see how an rx4 would turn out retro-rides style. The ones here with candy paint and 17+ inch rims don't really do it for me...
If you ever want to pass on the ssr's... I might have too many sets of rims already but none of them are ssr's!
Super excited to see how this turns out

Yep- big wheels on old cars is just the wrong look IMO. Rock on little 13/14" dia super wide wheels!!!

Agree with the above really, don't go to much on big wheels/old car combos, but each to there own I guess! My hot wires are 13x7 rears and 13 x6.5 fronts. Once the car is fully assembled ( with exception of welding boot floor in) I ll look at dropping it some more. But for now with fuel tank and full interior out the lowering can wait! Its already been done a little I think but I like lowness especially with little wheels :-) No candy paint either! Thinking either an old english white, a light 2pac blue or maybe a gunmetal grey... unsure yet! Plus its a joint project between me and my dad so i ll have to consult lol! ;D
Tiimmy201, the ssr's will most likely be surplus to requirements as I m pretty set on the hotwires but they do need a bit of work to make decent. I m not really sure its worth the effort but was going to put them up for a few dollars on perth rotary as I'm sure they are of use to someone. If interested PM me.

I reckon a gray would be pretty nice [/url] I didn't realize you were on the west coast. I think I'd better rebuild my engine before buying another set of rims (think I've got 4-5 sets)

Cool pic btw, looks good in grey...;
