Oh, and and as someone else said, keep it on 13, they handle MUCH better..
AND - I assume it has the little brake calipers ? With the correct carriers , you can fit VW II calipers and mk1 gti discs and pads - that makes a difference.. ( DISCALIMER - I may have that all wrong, my memory isnt what it was... lol ) Have fun. :-)

Rare car mate, look after it ! You might find those rims will rub on the rear arches with some mates in the back ! :-o Have a good MH 1300 engine here if you wanna go a bit faster. :-D Oh yes, it won't be going down the rat road and I'll be making sure as best I can to get it back to it best and keep it there. That shouldn't be a problem as I've rarely been taxi man. I think I'll keep the teardrops for when the weather is nice and such anyway. I am thinking about an engine swap, I kind of have my eyes on the 1.4 16v thingy that someone else on this forum has stuck in their polo coupe. As for the breaks, they are fairly terrible at the minute so I'll take your advice into consideration, cheers! I can't offer expert advice on the starting issue, but it might be worth having a look at your spark plugs and points to check they're healthy, starting with the easy stuff first is always a good idea. These cars don't like the cold and the damp so much, but once they get up to temperature they seem a lot happier. I think I'll have a proper snout around at the weekend as it's my daily and wouldn't want to mess something up and be without a car lol. Thanks for the advice, I think you're right about these cars not liking the cold and damp though! May have to treat her to a warm blanket for the winter!

If I'm reading the sidewalls on the new tyres correctly I'd say they are probably too wide to fit your car without serious mods. 195 is about 50mm wider than standard and also, being 14" wheels, its making the unit taller despite the slightly lower-profile tyre. I tried 195/45/15 on mine and although slightly smaller in height I have to concede they are too wide for the car although I really wanted them to fit - (145mm x 80%) x 2 + 13" = 116 mm x 2 + 330.2mm = 562mm
- (195mm x 60%) x 2 + 14" = 117 mm x 2 + 355.6mm = 584mm
- (195mm x 45%) x 2 + 15" = 87.75mm x 2 +381 mm = 556mm

With alloys on breadies, the rear arches give the biggest problem. For extra clearance on the front I removed the tabs for the plastic crud catchers and on the back I've done nothing as I haven't gone stupidly low. However, if you're running anything wider than a 5.5j wheel, it seems to be the case that chopping and rolling of arches is required on the back since there's not much room in there. I do hope you get the teardrops polished and fitted though, they'll look excellent once the car is lowered to fit them.
Brakes are probably atrocious as I expect you'll have no servo, they just take a bit of getting used to is all. Save money on expensive gym memberships, drive an early Mk2 Polo!

Hey, I'm a noob too iv got a breadvan aswell and i had the phil J springs and shocks on my previous polo. When i got this breadvan i thought i would try the cheaper ebay springs and shocks. To be honest i really cant see where my money went when i bought the philj ones as they both came in the same packaging, and same ride.. Get the lowest springs and shocks as possible and keep the rears on the top notch. Mine isnt low enough on the front so i need to chop a coil or two out. Keep the rear springs on the top notch as theres no worse thing than a reverse rake! Heres a picture for good measure

Probably worth checking the pads/ shoes aren't shot all the same- just 'cos there's no servo doesn't mean the brakes have to be pants, it just means you have to stamp harder!
I've a soft spot for these things (childhood memories!) and that's a particuarly nice one- keep it black and keep it shiny. I can actually remember going to look at a black one when I was probably about 8 and my Mum was looking for a car- got a red one in the end 'cos it was newer, but I wanted the black one- it really does suit them.
Had a PhilJ 60/40 kit on my Mk2 saloon, didn't find the ride too harsh but then my other vehicle at the time was a leaf sprung Land Rover. Phil will get back to you eventually, he's a busy man (but very helpful in my experience). The 60/40 is just right to get them looking a bit less like it's riding on pogo sticks without really affecting driveability- it doesn't look particuarly dramatic though.

By way of example, I'm on 60/40, the white one is stock. This one is further down than 60/40 and looked excellent for it, especially being almost stock to look at. Possibly 80/90, I hear that's the lowest you can go without chopping enormous bits out of the car.

I didn't think a 60/40 drop was noticeable at all, but after seeing yours next to a one at the standard height it's a massive improvement. I think with the rear arches being slightly square it gives the impression that the front isn't low enough. I do love the look of the really low one, think I'll try some springs and shocks that'll go a bit lower than 60/40. I've got a VW nut coming to have a look at the problem I have with the car. It seems to be a fairly common problem with the carb and I hope it'll be an easy thing to fix. Here's a little teaser as to what I'm planning with the teardrops. They're by no means finished though!

I like that low A plate on standard steels. I think the original wheels are a very nice bulbous shape anyway. Would be great to get a pair banded another inch or so.
I've never realy understood the 60/40 80/90 thing. Why aren't they lowered same amount front and back?

I'm guessing it's something to do with the spring ratings. Front ends always seem to need to come down a percentage more than the rear to get it all looking level.
I keep having thoughts about banding out my original steels to the same width as my Tarantulas, it's only an extra few quid per wheel and I'm going to be refurbishing them anyway...
