I'm confused. I want to lower the Golf. It's a driver, so I think it has lower suspension than standard Golfs anyway right? So if I use 40mm springs on a gti/driver will there be a noticable drop? And if I use 60mm will I need to also replace the shocks with shorter ones? I want to go low enough that there's an appearance change/stance but not so low that I'm going to have a bad ride.

Just get cheap ebay coilovers, why anybody would want lowering sprigs when coilovers are £150 new and a lot more tuneable. Even running them high you can swap springs around to get it to ride nicely.

A driver / gti is only lower due to slightly lower springs as standard if i recall, so whatever springs / shocks you exchange on to it, your basically starting from scratch whatever model you put them on (if that makes sense). As above, either get some cheap coilies so you can set the height exactly as you want it, or get a decent quality -60mm kit for a good compromise between comfort, handling and looks. This was my mk2 GTI on a -60mm supersport kit that i bought nigh-on brand new for £70.00. Was fairly low, but never scraped on anything and handled very well.

I've been told to steer clear of cheap coilovers as they give a terrible ride/far to stiff etc?! The ride is usually curse word because people wind them all the way down and they have no travel left. You can get new springs very cheaply to make it ride or handle better.

got some used springs I was about to put in the classifieds depends on each brand and how much they lower it , mine are weitec and -40mm , sits like this idealy you want uprated dampers, but they will work on std ones

Had -60 springs on stock GTi(same as on the driver) shocks on mine with fresh bump stops. Looked great and stuck to the road like sh*t to a blanket. Coilover are obviously better but for an interim/cheaper option it worked for me

Thanks for the advice. 40mm looks low with those 15 sebrings fills the arches nicely however ill be keeping std 14 steelies so maybe 60mm would be Best?

14" should fill the arch the same as mine , you would have a taller sidewall so that the overall rolling size remains the same

Ebay HotTuning coilovers - been on ours for 2 years or so now, they have transformed the car.
It's pretty stiff mind, so you do need to be aware.

GREAT...so verdict is neither 40mm, 60mm or coilovers will cause any particular problems, none will need shocks changing from the standard Gti/Driver ones, and I just need to stop umming and arring and stick it!

you don't need to do shcoks , idealy you should
they will soon ruin tired shocks , and they can tend to bounce on standard ones

Cant you just put thicker oil in the shocks? surely that would stiffen them up :S but yeah id personally go for the ebay coilies

I'd vote for the cheap coilovers too. Have a set on our Jetta and they've been fine for the past two years. IMO, it doesn't ride too bad. If you were going to be properly blasting the B roads, I'd feel more confident with springs/shocks, but if your not going be driving too hard, the coilies should be fine.

I drive our Mk2 GTI very, very hard. Even on pretty poor surfaces it feels planted to me, but then I'm used to a 205 GTI which makes a Golf feel like an oil tanker at the best of times to be honest.

So will running lowering springs with standard shocks, to get a decent set of springs you need adjustable damping shocks to match and then it comes into cheap coilover price region.

Take one Golf Driver and rip out the springs/shocks Purchase one set of Hot Tuning eBay coilovers and start to assemble Watch the lows take shape as each side is done Give yourself a big thumbs up when the work is complete Sup on a beer or two while helping the springs to settle Be proud of your new found lowness If time permits, have some late night fun with rattle cans and the trim rings DONE!
