I heart this car.
As for tacking the rust, do both at once. It actually works out more efficient because you end up welding one bit, then the other, then primering/painting one whilst the other dries and vice versa.

Received this pattern panel arch today. (From Imperial Automotive) Pretty happy overall, it looks like the right part (I haven't checked it against the car yet). It has been slightly dented in front of the arch which is a shame but not too big a deal. I'm a little disappointed with the quality of the pressing around the top of the arch. It only cost £26.40 and they delivered it free because they mistakenly told me it was in stock in Doncaster, but it wasn't when I got there. Fingers crossed it still seems OK when actually offered up to the car.

Hmturbo, PM sent. I have held the part upto the car and there are some differences. I guess the saloon 2dr is slightly different to the 2dr coupe. I think I can work with it but its not ideal. Basically there is a strong crease on this panel which isn't on the car and the arch starts to taper out about 2" higher up than it does on this car. Otherwise the bottom (complicated to make) sections are good and the width of the arch flare seem the same. A picture to tell a thousand words...

A little consolidated update... 1) I bought the correct arch from HMTurbo, but I haven't fitted it yet. It should make the repair task a little easier. 2) Parked next to my brothers new car at mum and dads house for Christmas. 3) 27th December driving back to Leeds THIS happened! 4) And tonight I bought some Celica Supra 14" wheels on eBay, a bit rough but affordable. Now I need to work out how to get them from Nr Brighton to Leeds. -Steve-

Ha, great find on the 'CGI' pics. Near enough spot on! Maybe I I'll get it looking all shiny like that one day. Maybe without the bean can exhaust, though I do have thoughts on a subtle front splitter.

Hi joeyman96 (and anyone else who might be interested), Mega threadbump just noticed! Sorry for the mega delay. Kitsos was used throughout last summer on nice days and had plenty of runs out, up to the lake district and down to the RR Gathering being the most memorable. I have not managed to do much in the way of restoration but its being kept safe and dry. It has been off the road over the winter (as usual) but I have been focussing my effort into the Porsche so far this year so haven't taken it for a new MOT yet. I am finding it very difficult to find the few parts I really want for Kitsos but I keep trawling eBay. I managed to get some RHD headlights and a gearstick gator. I really want to find a pair of wing mirrors, a piece of rear side window chrome trim and a MPH speedo. I think collecting some more of these parts will spur me on to get it in the bodyshop to get the dents and paint sorted out. It's not entirely coincidence I checked in on this thread today, I am in Greece this week with my girlfriend visiting her parents. Kitsos used to 'live' in the garage just down stairs. Hopefully it wont be so long until I have a proper progress update to report. -Steve-

good to hear kitsos is still going fine and how nice could it have been if you took kitsos back to his former home to show her parents how happy he is now:)

Well hello!! It's time to bump this thread again. It's only been 3yrs since I last had anything to say, but you know, time just fly's. It (re)starts last November when Danai and myself got our first house together. The new house has a garage that's actually big enough to fit a car in so Kitsos could come with us too. The garage it's been in since we imported it 5yrs ago was only just big enough to squeeze the car in and had no electric so it was only any good for storage, it was perfectly dry though and was included with Danai's rented flat so it wasn't all bad. The new garage isn't perfect either, the floor slopes a bit and there's some damp to sort out too, but I can work with it... Anyway I didn't want to bump the thread untill I had started work on the car, so here we are. You might need a little recap first though. Kitsos is still running and driving OK but has been off the road for the last 3yrs as I focused my time on getting my 924 going and I had nowhere to properly work on it anyway. It's still in the same good solid condition but still has all its knocks and terribly flat paint. There is just one main section of rust that requires major attention, the rear left had wheel arch. The other arches are like new and there is little if any rust elsewhere, just this one arch has really disintegrated. I think this arch must have been lightly scraped many years ago and it just kept rusting from there. So there was bathroom silicon... Hiding this... Which I had trimmed back to this... I had sourced a repair panel but wasn't really in a position or confident enough to fit it. So now I have a garage and have gained a bit more experienced at welding I'm going to tackle it. It's going to be a real challenge but this time; I'm doing it. The first job is to patch that inner arch. I made my CAD template... Cut the rust out... Cut a patch out of a repair panel... Tweaked it to fit... Tacked it... And filled it in... Ground it, welded up pin holes, re-ground it and voila... And that's where I'm up to at the moment. Still really scared to start cutting the outer arch and the repair panel but I have made a start now so I'm going to keep at it. -Steve-

Your first repair on the inner arch looks ace! So get going! It's only metal ;-) Weld the outer in smal steps! If you have a compressor then use the air to cool the welds! In that way you don't distort the metal with heat! Keep up the good work :-)

Glad to see the progress finally & beautiful work. I think where you have the body work cut already makes a lot of sense if you have it back to a solid thickness. Though no expert on arches I always worry when people go & use as much of the repair panel as possible when I'd tend towards the opposite & try to keep repairs away from flatter areas of the panel which would be more prone to distortion. More flattened copper pipe perhaps.

smeden - Thanks. I don't have a compressor so will just have to take it slowly to let heat dissipate. 79cord - I intend to use the current cut line (maybe tidied up a bit) for the arch section. The two bottom sections (the rear sill end and the rear arch pocket) are both corroded too so I have a decision to make here. 1) Tackle the arch and bottom bits as one piece. 2) Split the repair in to three separate smaller repairs. Arch, rear sill end & rear pocket. I can see advantages and disadvantages to doing it either way so haven't decided yet.

The arch repair is temporarily on hold again, I don't want to rush it and have a different deadline to meet. Toby and myself have decided to go to Laon Historique in just over a weeks time! We have been putting in the hours trying to get his MGA on the road and there's still lots to do. As far as Kitsos is concerned there is less to prepare. Most importantly Kitsos got a fresh ticket this week... I can't believe its been off the road for 4yrs!!!! how did that happen. I have ordered a fresh battery and need to get some new tires fitted ASAP. I should probably change to oil too. Anyway gotta go and bleed the brakes on the MGA, fingers crossed because it might finally be driveable then! Toby's MGA thread can be found here: 1959 MGA Roadster Restoration I just haven't had the time to update it yet!... -Steve-

Great to see this still going. I had a light metallic blue 79 Liftback that my Dad brought back from Holland when he worked there. It had a 4K 1.3 engine, put a 5-speed box in it, but it made it a bit lethargic on hills, unless I used 4th.
It had it's fair share of rust, and it suffered damage to the wing and door when someone pulled out on me at a roundabout, but I managed to fix it, keep it going and must have got it to near 250,000km. Sadly, the engine was worn out, rust got a hold, and it had to go. I still have fond memories.
I've never seen one on the road for many years, so this must be one of the only ones left. Hope you keep it going.

It passed the MOT with half the arch missing? They failed mine for some small holes in the bottom of the front wings...
