Originally my plan for this year was to pop a 6 speed box and a Torsen diff in this and go Hillclimbing and sprinting. There's been a change of plan involving this: Untitled by Nicholas R Horne, on Flickr It's not mine but it's going to cost me money and has resulted in me booking my ARDS for a full race licence. This means a trimming of the budget for doing stuff in my mx5 this year and while I'm gong to try and do plenty of speed events the 6 speed and diff are now certainly on the back burner. More on the mk2 in the coming weeks.

I've been running the standard manifold since charging it and recently it's been blowing from the collector. Picked up a Trust 4-2-1 stainless from an MX5 breaker and fitted it up today with homemade heat blanket to keep some of the heat away from the charger. Untitled by Nicholas R Horne, on Flickr Untitled by Nicholas R Horne, on Flickr Sounds much deeper now and seems to have a bit more mid range torque.

Today was nice and sunny and the wife was out so I cracked on and got a few jobs done. Fitted a strut brace I bought this week (need to fab up a brake stopper on it soon). Fixed the non working windscreen washers. Fitted the one (because I didn't realise I needed to order 2!) transit washer jet. Re-fitted the horns as I'd taken them off to fit the intercooler, forgot to re-fit and then tidied them away. Replaced the centre console/armrest as the original one had broken where the leccy window switches screw into. Gave it a clean. Fab watching this car progress. Not sure what route I'll be taking my S-Spec but this remains one of the best V-Specs I've seen.

First AutoSolo of the year. Done. Bit of a disaster frankly. Firstly I was not in the zone and in the three runs of the first course I went wrong every time, dumb ass. I improved on the second course runs and only went wrong on one of the three, sadly due to the earlier naviagtional issues I was well down the pecking order (read, last out of 45). Lunch break arrived and we'd be warned the surface at this venue was super abbrasive. It was. My tyres, the only set I had with me, were pretty much done. The rears were pretty worn but OK, the fronts were verging on the legal limit and I knew with that kind of wear rate the afternoon would see me down to the canvas. I decided to retire and go home having at least had fun in the morning. Untitled by Nicholas R Horne, on Flickr

Replaced the old Toyo T1Rs with Kumho HS51s as recommended by Nick from Mazda on Track. Untitled by Nicholas R Horne, on Flickr Untitled by Nicholas R Horne, on Flickr Need to scrub them in as they still have the release agent on them but already found they give a nice progressive and predictable break away, ha ha ha.

Update time:
The Kumho tyres are excellent. So much more wet grip than the T1Rs, turn in and mid corner stability are also much improved. They also give much more feedback and are more progressive on and over the limit of grip. These are now my tyre of choice for the 5 when not needing semi slicks.
Sadly I am having issues with the car at the moment. The fuel pump keeps cutting out leaving me with no go. Initially I thought this might be relay related as myself and Skuzzle wired in a new loom for the Walbro pump but I replaced the relay and it still cuts out occasionally. It's very odd as the car dies and you can spin it over on the starter but no fire up, you can hear the pump is not running. If you let the immobiliser kick in and then turn it off you the pump still doesn't run on II on ignition but does jump into life when you kick the starter over. Now this would point to the immobiler being an issue but when that is on the starter doesn't even work. I can't understand how it could be half immobilising the car? Very frustrating as although I know a quick fix for when it happens it doesn't help if it does it on track and I want it bloomin fixed.
This brings me onto track based activities. I am booked on the FDMC Dimanche Sprint on May 3rd in Aldershot and the Abingdon CAR-nival Sprint on June 6th at Abingdon Airfield. Exciting times!

Exciting times! Interested to hear more about getting involved in events (sprint, hillclimb etc.) where did you do your ARDS? what sort of events are you doing? have you joined a motor club? I'm near Swindon and Thruxton do an ARDS course for £310, not sure if they do anything at Castle Combe. I've looked at Abingdon for a track day is it the same course for the sprints do you know? Mark p.s. Your MX5 is the direction I'd like mine to go in.
