Weber Carbs - tell me your thoughts / experiences.

A guy at work heard me talking about my Audi and brought in a set of twin 40 Weber carbs. As a child of the K-Jet generation I know nothing about Webers other than they were THE set up to have on your Escort/Avenger during the 70s.

The set he has offerred me are twin 40s, will need a service as there are a couple of bits missing and will obviously need some kind of adaptor to fit the inlet on either the 1.6 motor thats currently in the Audi or (if I can find one) a 2.0 16V lump from one of the mid 80s Audis.

So - what do you reckon I should offer him for the pair and is it worth the hassle of fitting, setting up and constant fettling that I would be having to carry out, compared to the simple hassle free K-Jetronic fuel injection that the 2.0 16V will come with?

webbers are good carbs but tbh i prefere bike carbs they are much more advanced and cheep.
as well as very easily tunable..

I reckon Webers are redundant nowadays, and are just for rally-jacket-wearing folk who blatter themselves at the thought of doing a bit of wiring or manifold fabrication. Leave it standard or get some injection on there (or possibly bike carbs) is my view.

16V + K-jet gets its old boy out and wazzes all over a set of webers IMO.

Well I've never bettered K Jet for turn key motoring - just had a look on ebay and twin 40/45 set ups make some good money - might just buy them off him cheap and whack them on'T Bay

Weber 40's will deffo perk it up. Alot.
And help it to make a lovely 'sucky' noise too.

But they will also empty your wallet faster than you can fill it.

Bay them and yog the proceeds on some efficient (but not so handsome) set-up / beer / loose women etc.

Now you're talking. some dub greebo will be more than happy to pay good coin for 'that' noise, poor driveability and 18mpg thirst, while you laugh all the way to the bank/paypal account.

I had a twin 40 set-up on my first estelle for a bit.

Nigh on bankrupted me. And the weber 'thing' on my slumber ain't too clevah either....

just buy a few cans of easy start and employ a lithuanian guy (cash in hand of course!!) to sit in the engine bay pressing the nozzle.

Any thoughts/advise on Dellorto carbs? I've got a twin choke 40 on my bugrat atm.

I always understood that the main failing with carbs over EFi was that the carb setup is always going to be a compromise; that correct jetting for top-end power will leave them spitting fuel back out the bellmouth in the lower end and that efficient fuelling low down will leave the engine starving high up.

Bike carbs are supposed to be the zenith of carb-tuning...Constant-Velocity (like an old SU) but without falling apart, seizing, being generally spacky and they look good, sound good, you get one carb per cylinder PLUS(!) they free up some power

I love the 40's on the ZS. OK they use fuel like bathwater and are only really in tune on the way back from the tuners, but they make a great noise and sound way cool.
On the proper plus side they work good on the track as they are set up for that so I live with the poor low speed stuff and stuttering etc.

That said they are really retro tec. If I had the (any) money I'd wap a set of bike carbs on the old girl or a proper injection set up with TB's. There's a reason why most sucessful competition cars use engine management - its better!

webber (and solex delorto etc..) sidedraft carbs are excellent carbs.. u can get excellent power from them but the choke system is a joke and should be never used!!! too rich!
and u will lose a bit of drivability off the bottem end.. this is where the bike carbs (cv carbs) work out well with excellent smooth power from the off..
and yes they can be thursty to run,, but if set u right they are not too bad... the biggest prob' is that with a hole in the power at the bottem end of the rev range and that lovely sound they make open, along with the more top end power, u will not be able to get your foot off that throttle!! he he.
