I was thinking about how cars become to be regarded as classic - or more accurately, how some cars gain classic status faster than others. For example, the Mk1 Fiesta is seen as a classic, yet the Mk3 Escort (although a little later) isn't regarded as such (yet). This then got me thinking... what will the members of retro cars forums be talking about in 25 years time? OK, all cars will be classics one day, but some seem to have more cred than others... What will be seen as a cool retro motor?
My guesses are: Subaru SVX - rare as, and completely barking design. Fast too! Renault Avantime / Vel Satis - see above (apart from the fast bit) Vauxhall Sig-summinorother (that Vectra estate thing) Ford Sierra - especially the early ones. CityRover - only kidding.
What about everyone else?

Ford Sierras are on their way already, so they're a definate, the MX5 and the new Mazda rotary sports car, the RX8, are definates, I like them already. It won't be my fault if the rear wheel drive 80s Volvos (240/740 etc) aren't up there, and I reckon the Lotus Elise and MGF/MGTF are definatly gaining a following as the next MGB/Lotus Elan. I can imagine the Smart car becoming a kind of 21st century Mini, but here's the shocker, I say that true enthusiasts will never be so stupid as to accept the new Mini and new Beetle as real enthusiasts cars just because the originals were great. The new ones are probably worthy cars in some respects, but they are by no means replacements for the originals.

I've worked for an Alfa dealer processing warranty claims, believe me there won't be any 156s left by 2029.... This is a very important point !!! The cars we consider retro or classic today were made in an era when cars were built to last... I don't think that modern cars will be able to withstand 40 or more years of use (and abuse) and a few million km's... Moreover, their complexity and the high cost of their parts will definately force their owners to scrap them, when the time for major repairs arrives ! Anyway, if some do manage to survive, the sporty Peugeots of the '90s (106 Rallye/GTi, 306 Rallye/GTi) will surely become classics !

Ohh a good one...
I'm gonna agree with the SVX suggestion. I reckon the Plymouth Prowler thingy will be there too.
Not sure of many others. Cars aren't built like they used to be...

Very true about them not lasting! Do manufacturers even do any rust-proofing any more? There was a time not long ago when galvanised chassis were the thing to do, but maybe the accountants have stepped in.... I reckon the retro cars of the future will have all the electronics stripped out - maybe even going onto carbs! Then again, petrol will probably be about £5 a litre by then and we'll all be f***ed

nah.....if you think about it people move on with technology. We wont scrap cars because of complexity, people will just learn more and fix them. Modern cars are more disposable than older ones, and modern engineering only makes the matters worse. I think alot of cars, especially japs, are made of very thin metal, and so i would think that might help take more off the road. The only people that don't use tinfoil now are Germans and Yanks....
I think there will be future classics though....but they will only be cars that enthusiasts will apreciate.....Most people who are into cars are into them for the driving experience aswell....so
The BMWs...especially 5 series 8 series etc... Impreza/Skyline/Evo (those that actually last 25 years!!!) MX5 MGF etc Elise Audi TT (just cuz of its shape) New Beetle (see above) There are more but ive got other things to do.
I think the modern era will be looked upon as a dark patch in motoring history.....the best cars will always be from the 60's and 70's....Otherwise i wouldnt be interested in cars older than me! I wont mention any yanks, cuz theyll always be considered enthusiasts in UK.

Smart cars (all the 2 seaters -they'll never be un-funky!) Corsas/Saxos etc. Any boy-racer car will have a following - people will always go back and build the car the used to have/always wanted. Daewoo Matiz (I just like them, I'm watching the prices come down) Anything Cosworth Those V8 MG ZTs (unless they all get used as donor cars!) VW commercials (especially Caravelles - the modern Samba equivalent)

yey!! woohoo!
Indeed. I plan to keep my rallye until I/it falls apart...shame I can't stop ragging it with enjoyment....
I reckon a lot of those modified hot hatches that haven't been bastardardised with MDF, LEDs and burberry caps will recognised as classics. (VTR's , hot ford, GM etc)
Of todays current models:
Premiership - definates
Renault Cleo 172/182/V6 Alfa 156/147 Audi TT Mazda RX8 Mazda MX5 All Smarts Focus RS
1st division - likelys
Daihatsu Copen Hyundai coupe Lexus IS200 Seat Leon Cupra Skoda vRS Pug 406 coupe
2nd division - good chance -
Astra coupes VW lupo/polo GTI Renault Vel satis MG 206/206/307 cab honda civic type R
3rd Division - probability
Fords, Audi, BMs etc
4th Division - relegation
Kia Proton perodua tata Nissan almera daewoo mitsubishi charisma chityrover Citroen Xsara 5 door
.....but they said that about datsuns 20 years ago!
Ironic in a post modernist chance -
Hyundai SG Fiat Stilo
To be honest, I think virutally everything on sale today has a good chance - after all even the poorest of cars on sale in the seventies has some sort of owners club.
well.......except the spiteful cynical CityRover!

All of the Smart range.
There are loads of good new cars but most arnt that interesting.
I suppose every car has its fans. It wasent that long ago that some of the now"classic cars" were considered old bangers.
I regulary drive a 3 year old Zafira which is a really nice clever car. But I cant see me wanting to restore one in 25 years time!!

It is hard to imagine stuff we see every day as being in a garage undergoing a full resto in 25yrs time! People raving about finding a one-owner time-warp Sierra 2000E in a barn somewhere....crazy... I don't think time will look too kindly on the mock-retro wibblepoo though - BMW Mini, VW New Beetle... Imagine if Ford had re-bodied a Mk2 Escort to look like a Pop in the '70's... people would still go for the real thing today I bet.

The only people that don't use tinfoil now are Germans and Yanks.... Nah, the Russians use very strong and thick steel, it's just they know curse word all about rustproofing, the lorries are the very same, incredibly strong, and simpler to fix than a Volvo or Scania lorry, but a bit of waxoyl now and then wouldn't go wrong at all! Other modern cars that will always have a following are the modern Range Rovers and Defenders (the names are already legendary, although I don't like the new Rangie's Posh 'n Becks image! I'm definately not a football fan or a celeb worshipper! ) the little pocket rocket Pugeots of the 90s, as afore mentioned (sporty 106 especially) the Scooby Impreza and Lancer Evo will be performance classics, if anyone can fix the buggers when they start giving up the ghost (kind of a neo Audi Quattro or Lancia Intergrale thing going on in terms of image) and I think TVRs and Nobles will always have a place at classic shows.
