Todays top tip for ghetto / DIY driveshaft swaps Jack one side of the car as high as possible so when you slide the driveshaft out you don't loose any gearbox oil ;D Thanks to my friendly local mechanic for the tip Thanks also to my local Retro-friendly / clued-up-about-old-cars parts suppliers Both are oldschool parts shops and normally manage to find parts for the 70's & 80's Retro beasities I use as dailies. Handy to know about if you are visiting the area Speedo Motor Accessories, Market Place, Crook, County Durham, DL15 8NE homepage www.speedocarparts.co.uk/contact_us.htmlTel : 01388 763600 Gearbox Autoparts, 63 Station Road, Forest Hall, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE12 8AQ (they have been here many years so have quite a lot of old stock on-site ) Tel : 0191 266 9846 www.bizwiki.co.uk/car-parts/204985/gearbox-autoparts.htm

Introduction & background to "THE" driveshaft thread ;D Thanks to everyone who gave advice and helped out when I was trying to find which shaft I needed, it was all very much appreciated! In no particular order take a bow - ruffgeezer, welshpug, rob, tim, and anyone else I've forgotten to mention Driveshafts - how to tell if they are on the way out ? Linky to HonestJohn website www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=55354Tip : if it knocks when you turn right - the left shaft is dying, if it's when you turn left the problem is the right shaft Most obvious for me when pulling out of an estate into the main road (lots of lock and accelerating from standstill) Replaced one of mine - the general rumbling & groaning stopped. Replaced the other - and the knocking on corners stopped. Odd that they gave very different noises when they failed Basics Driveshafts come in different lengths. Doh Pug/Citroen also have a choice of 2 different fittings at the hub end Apologies for the dodgy cameraphone pic Top = thin nut, non-taper shaft (pre-2000 'ish) Lower = deep nut, tapered shaft (2000-on 'ish) Tip The ones I've seen all have either thin nut with non-taper shoulder, or deep nut with tapered shoulder ... so you can tell if the shoulder on your shaft is taper or non-taper JUST BY LOOKING AT THE NUT ! No need to strip the hub before ordering spares ;D Wish I'd know that last week Note. Catalogues give overall length of the shafts but don't include the threads (pretend you've cut the threads off the hub end before measuring the shaft ) The UJ's are spring loaded, so allow a few MM as they will be compressed when you fit them Note the threads on taper hubs are longer than threads on the non-taper hubs (Honest - ignore how it looks in my dodgy photo above ) Edit to add more info

Right, this is it ;D The "Everything you ever wanted to know about AX driveshafts but didn't dare ask!" thread Image you've just bought a near-mint "N" reg 5-speed 1.5 diesel AX with 3-stud wheels and decide to replace the perfectly good driveshafts that it had on when you got it. Where do you start? In my case I gave my local motor spares place the spec and asked them to order in a pair of new shafts. I could have ordered on Ebay and saved a few quid but by the time you add postage on it's not much of a saving, it also make life difficult if you find you've got the wrong part (a wise choice on my part as it turned out). Ebay don't need the old units back, my local shops are exchange-only. Next day I collected the 2 nice shiny new shafts Part numbers were 29075 (shorter shaft) & 29076 (longer) For info, a pair of shafts are normally made up of a short shaft (fits on clutch side of the motor - normally passenger side), and a longer side - guess where this goes ;D Fast-forward a couple of days and I was in the workshop trying to fit them. 29076 (longer) went onto the drivers side no problem ;D 29075 was the right fittings (non-taper hubs) but about 2" too short for the passenger side Catalog said I had 614mm long shafts but there were also 625mm available. Shop duly ordered in a longer shaft ... DS1309 turned up, I removed the old shaft and found the new one was the right length but had wrong (taper hub) fittings A.N.Other shop (Gearbox Autospares ) got told the whole sorry tale. Bless them, just over an hour later they *delivered* 2 longer shafts for me to compare to the old one while it was off the car. Lots of brownie points for customer service! I now had a choice of 2 longer shafts : DS1309 (right length but wrong fittings), also... C1176 (right length, right non-taper fittings), boring colour but it fits so who cares ;D Note. C1176 = DS1164 So, for any AX anorak-types who like collecting part numbers we have... Driver side29076, (non-taper fitting), listed in the catalog and fits fine. Passenger side29075, right (non-taper) fittings but 2" too short DS1309 right length but wrong (tapered hub) fittings C1176 (or DS1164) spec says its for a 1.0 106 but it's on and I'm keeping it! Hope the info helps other folk avoid some of the pain I've been through for the past 10 days ps - I now know my car has non-taper hub fittings, another thing I wish I'd known last week

The tapered non tapered issues should only come about if you are being sent/buying Saxo or 106 shafts as the Ax only goes to 96/97. There is another type as well with ABS rings as some Ax GTi's came with ABS Glad you've got it up to scratch though they are the most economical things ever!! Get over onto www.AXownersclub.com the info you need is all there, granted it's locked in the paid members chat bit which cost £10 for life but if you are keeping it a while then it will be invaluable to you for things like the shafts.....oooops bit late for that lol

I recently saw a bolt-on conversion for AX and/or early 106/Saxo, remove the hatch and bolt on a squared-off rear body to make a van profile. All looked neat and would give a handy increase in luggage space Shame I've lost the link for it Remove existing plastic tailgate to get ... Bolt on the roof extension & new door kit to get something like ... INFO / PARTS WANTED : If anyone has any info on the van conversion kit can they post up the link or PM me - much appreciate it ! Also looking for a cheap tailgate spoiler (from AX GTI etc ?), condition not too important as it will be getting painted. Whatcha got ;D Front seats are torn, I'm interested in decent interior or info about what will bolt in (are 106 / Saxo rear seats same size as AX ?) many thanks

Just back from MOT, not bad but final score is ... Nearside bottom balljoint worn Nearside TCA rubber bushing torn *both* headlights loose 1 indicator showing white light not yellow No brakelights (but they've been ok since we got the car - and were ok last night when we pre-MOT'd all the lights) Called into Speedo at Crook to order a new bottom arm (complete with balljoint & TCA bush ) - found they had one on the shelf! Result ;D Also picked up a pair of "proper" yellow indicator bulbs for the front. then the fun started All good so far Nearside - an odd (offside?) indicator bulb holder has been bodged using gaffa tape expertly fitted. This would be fine but the holders are handed and you can't clip a offside holder into a nearside indicator assembly It was working, since I changed the bulb it's not - and it's too cold to get the tape off to check the connections Just out of shot is the cabletie that has been put on as an upgrade to the inferior factory headlight mountings Offside - Oh Dear ! i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh36/Nomad_Geordie/PICT2169.jpgWhere to start? How many custom mods can you find? I've noticed improved sealing (silicone grab-all ?) around the washer filler, interesting (bashed to fck) mounting where the top headlight mounting should fit, lots of damage to the lip around the headlight, some new and exiting rust on inner wing (normally hidden behind the headlight), the badly creased slam above the light I already knew about, and to finish it off nicely - the indicator lens dropped off the lamp unit when I was changing the bulb (they are called one-piece units, obviously the ones on this car are a different type : The 2-tone paint (ie flaking off a badly repaired fronted : is just part of the charm of this little car ;D So, possibly all fixed in time to go to the pub tonite ;D

Confession time Went outside full of good intentions (as you do), got the indicators & headlights fixed, decided not to bother fitting the suspension arm when it started snowing Was amused to find the dead indicator was due to water collecting inside the not-very-well-fitted bulb holder, it had been rested (not clipped) in place upside down, water had pooled around the connectors - which were so corroded they snapped when I moved the unit to fit a new bulb Scotchlocks to the rescue Todays free plugs for service above & beyond the call of duty go to ... Speedo Auto Spares at Crook (see earlier post for details) And for anyone after a sensible (firm but fair) retro-sympathetic MOT, my new 1st choice is Prince Bishop Garage, Crook, DL15 8LA Tel 01388 767 779 (currently just past Co-op but moving to other side of town in the next few weeks www.motonline.co.uk/index.cfm/page/mot_test_centre/name/prince_bishop_garage

Just back from a quick "fix-it" session, we're getting there ;D New wishbone fitted in double-quick time, about 45 mins from parking up to being back on the road ;D Would have been even quicker if Citroen had used normal metric sizes on the nuts & bolts Today I officially christened the 16 & 18mm sockets in my toolkit, I've had the socket set for 20+ years and have *NEVER* found anything that used those sizes - until now Then the fun started ... how difficult can it be to find why the brakelights stopped working the night before the test Fuses checked & ok (I now need to replace the silver "safety strip" somebody has used to hold the fusebox lid on : What's wrong with people these days - use black gaffa tape and you can open the lid and close it again. It's even colour-coded to blend in with the dashboard. Simples ;D Then found another Citroen gem - you have to remove the back light clusters to get to the bulb units Stripped both back lights and all bulbs are ok ;D Spent the next 10 minutes playing a game of "hunt the brakelight switch" Not near the pedal, only switch under the bonnet is for fluid level, eventually decided to try the obvious - take the steering column shroud off, drop the column, remove the sound deadening from behind the dash, and the switch is right in front of you. Don't know why I didn't think of it sooner Multimeter says it's hit & miss, sometimes it works, normally it fails Shorting the connectors gets a working brake light so I'll add a new switch to the shopping list. In now for a brew and warm up, then out again at dusk to see if I can get the headlights ... A - secured properly B - pointing where they should I can secure them or align them properly, I'm starting to suspect front slam panel might need jigging with a scaffold bar and lump hammer, then add new mounting clip fittings to get the lights secure and aligned

That's all for today folks ! Drivers headlight. I'm now happy with, it's secure ( after fitting a custom section of brass tubing to hold the sliding adjuster in place, and new cableties fitted to better mounting points). Alignment is fine - after lots of driving on unlit country lanes - stopping to adjust - repeat ... Passenger side. Hmmm - I can't see what is out of line (possibly the whole frontend : but adjustment goes between pointing down at 45* to down at 30*, great for lighting up a few paces in front of the car, nothing like useful lighting up the road ahead. Hoping to get it fixed in time for a MOT retest tomorrow so no pressure

Well ... we now have a fully MOT'd AX ;D Got to say the new certificates are a big disappointment, they look like something done by a six-year old. So much for fraud prevention, I'd think they are now worthless as you need to check online to know if they are genuine (maybe that's the idea - to get more car drivers used to doing everything online : For anyone wondering why I made such a fuss about the brakelight switch (and to help anyone who gets the job of changing one), pic below should help. This is the dash after removing the steering cowl, sound deadening (shame as it's the only soundproofing I've found on the car ), and moving the wiring harness to one side Can you see it yet ? Hint - it's above and to the left of the little green box !Does anyone know if there's any truth in the rumour it's only the UK cars that are like this? Have been told French ones have a totally different layout with easy-change consumables ;D

Well done for getting it through the test dude. You've done more work on that AX for one test, than I've ever done on any car I've ever had, combined.
Kudos.

Well done for getting it through the test dude. You've done more work on that AX for one test, than I've ever done on any car I've ever had, combined. Hadn't thought about it until you mentioned it then started making a quick list... Cash spent so far to get it safe and though the MOT... £80 driveshafts (2 @ £40, pair needed as both were shot) £30 suspension wishbone (MOT fail for worn balljoint and loose bush) £20 tyres 2 @ £10 to replace pair of rears (no tread on inside of one - was originally a front on badly tracking car? Punctured spare) £5 pair front indicator bulbs (yellow to fix MOT fail ) £30 service (oil & 2 filters) as all were well overdue. I make that something over £150 + IOU to a mate for use of his workshop Time spent... Driveshafts, 2 workshop sessions + lots of grief 8 hours ? Wishbone - 1 hour ;D Tyres (DIY swapping) - 1 hour ? Indicators - faffing around + fixing wiring + regluing loose lens, 2 hours ? Headlights - 3 sessions so far and still not right 4 hours ? Call it 2 days Fun stuff like tinted windows was my choice so I'm not counting that Brakelight switch I'm putting down as "just one of those things" I've also got an impressive and ever-growing list of niggles if I ever want to kill some time All this in not much more than a month of ownership I have checked everything out on it, and fixed anything thats broken with genuine Citroen parts only (receipts included). Hmmm.... Maybe take it as a heads-up for anyone looking at buying a cheap runabout, I've had good results in the past. Not so good this time. Budget for some time and cash (and fun) sorting problems on a new car, if there's none you're onto a winner
