I'm completely completely gutted.
After just servicing and getting my Capri running just right, I took it out for a test drive, spun out on a wet roundabout and destroyed the front left of the car, the chassis is twisted and I'm pretty sure it'll be a Cat B writeoff.
I'm going through insurance now, the engineers going to come check the car out at my house next week.
If the car is a Cat B writeoff, is there any way I can keep the car and break it for parts or strip it all and reshell it?
Thanks for any help!

If it was me and I'd written off a car I cherrished, I'd have it reshelled and transfer the ID. I'm pretty sure it's not legal but hey, if it means that much to you...*
The other option is to keep the parts and put them on another shell. Either option and you end up with a different car. But the first gives you the option of driving around and being ignorant that nothing ever happened ;D
*My attorney informs me that I should tell you I am in no way suggesting you do this

Cat B? No.
If it was a cat B, you would not be able to take anything from the car. Only a registered salvage company would.
Will be a cat c.

, if it means that much to you...* What? so you want the reg? I never get that... Its the car that means something to you. Not some random DVLA produced code on a piece of yellow plastic. And if you re-shell it it isnt the same car anyway. Regardless of the reg on it.

Any pics? I would imagine if you couldn't drive it home due to shell damage it would be a CAT B.

I wouldn't even bother getting the insurance involved if no other parties were.

Why are you getting insurance involved? If you want to keep the car then cancel the claim and repair it, it will have no marker against it then!
If you are adamant then DO NOT let them take your car away and make the assesor come to you, then rather than it be written off ask him for a contract repair agreement, this way they will set aside an amount for you to repair the car.
But I think your crazy mate, just cancel the claim asap!!!!!!!!!!!

I just have. My polo was Cat B as the suspension turrets had moved. It doesn't mean the car can't be rescued of you really want to. I got mine back free with no questions, but it couldn't go back on the road without being jigged, checked and signed off. Cat A generally gets bailed as a whole though No reason for this to be any cat though, as it may not be worth a fault claim in the long run.

I think in that case your right to claim, I'd hate to think how much the council would charge you to repair the lights. Not sure about the mods but maybe you should take them out?

IF the council were called to it or there is a Police CAD number chances are you will be recharged. You don't say where you hit them, if it's within the M25 then it'll be TFL after your ass. In this case you are probably correct to go through insurance as lampcolumns cost around £1600-2000 to replace so I'd imagine that traffic lights would be more!

You're about to get a very expensive lesson, or have a VERY close escape.
It makes sense to claim on it though because otherwise, the bill for replacing the lights will be painful. If you'd binned it into something that either didn't move, or survived intact (like I did, well, technically I landed on top of it, skillzorz. Speaking of which, I still have no idea if I ever got any kind of bill for the car being craned off either and no idea how to find out either, helpful) I wouldn't bother (I didn't, it's still broken.) However, IF the assessor spots your bits, then you'll be paying for it anyway... Tough one to call, though you've already started now...

Does anyone know how thorough the assessors are? the bonnet won't open, will they just leave that or do they have to check everything? or just inspect the damage?
It's my first crash and I feel a bit out of my depth, I just don't want this to have an adverse effect on my forseeable driving/financial life!

You're about to get a very expensive lesson, or have a VERY close escape. Undeclared modification and you lost control of the car... You can see exactly what angle they're going to take with that one. It makes sense to claim on it though because otherwise, the bill for replacing the lights will be painful. If you'd binned it into something that either didn't move, or survived intact (like I did, well, technically I landed on top of it, skillzorz.
