A Princess is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me...! I think they look ace and with a super smooth 6-cylinder one (if you fancy) you'll be wafting along in insane comfort, and then some...!!! It's a shame they didn't go ahead with the Vanden-Plas version... www.leylandprincess.co.uk/VP.htmThis should educate/inspire you a tad too... Damn darn it, I want one myself now...

No experience of Princesses (other than my Dad had one when he was about 25 and loved it, his boss had one at the same time and hated it), but try Lancaster and Footman James for insurance. They were both very cheap on the Marina, to the extent that an 1800 Marina was under half the price of an unmodified, base spec, small engined Mk1 Golf.
Also, BL tin rocks. In my experience the hardest bit to get is bodywork. Can't speak for Princesses but the Marina owner's club is good for odds and sods of bodywork and for things like clutch slave cylinders and other odd bits (mostly due to the hard work of a few individuals in the club). If there is an owner's club for the Princess I reckon it'd be worth joining. With cars of this age not all the owners/ interaction happens online, there's likely to be a lot more going on than Google suggests!

One running a rover turbo lump and dropped on the deck would be worthy. Ride would still be half comfortable too, due to the excessive use of padding in the seats... My great uncle had a clean looking white princess years back, and eventually replaced it with a t reg Citroen GSA estate. Class!

That would be an Ambassador by then. No, it was a Princess. I do know the difference.

2200 was E-series; in effect, 1.5 Maxi engines, and first used in Australia.
R-series was the 1600 motor in early Maestros, developed from the 4-cylinder E-series. Carburation and running problems saw a rapid redesign to become the S-series.

Was there no 5 speed version? i had a 5 speed 1750 maxi, great car for cruising and the seats folded down into a double bed, it had a full length Webasto in it. Can you imagine what a mobile double bed you can lay in and look at the stars did for a 19 year old lad? It was worth the curse word taking from my male friends.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

I'm sure someone at the BBC must have had one to inflict Terry Medford with one! Funny how we look on those ald BL tin with rose coloured specticles when back then we would have laughed at anyone who had one! so how can l get the wife to drive an alegro VP when she wants a figaro! There was a write up in classic car weekly a couple of weeks ago and erly one were wolseys and Morris badges then went to princess, interiors ans suspension are killer you can't get parts for either anymore! No princess was 4 speed manual or 3 speed auto.

I have fond memories of the Princess and Ambassador as my dad had one of each. He also had a Maxi, and a Maestro and........ Retro points for an obscure, unloved choice. Would I? No, don't know why but just no.

I was thinking that you must be able to put a Maxi 5sp box into one of these. And didn't they make a wolsey version as well?

Isn't the mechanical setup basically that of an overgrown Mini? And that being the case, is there any good reason the choices of big FWD power available for Minis couldn't equally be applied to a Princess? Or a Maxi? I reckon a Princess with a Northstar V8 would make for a pretty good sleeper, especially if the paintwork was a bit tired and the suspension looked like it had deflated. Wonder if one would fit without significant mods to the monocoque. edit: Really like the sketches in that first video above. The tail end could have been treated a whole lot more sympathetically. Also "a light to tell you if your brakes have failed". edit: Northstar with 4-speed slushbox from a Cadillac Seville is 35" wide overall. What's the width of the Princess bay?

I don't see why a bigger engine couldn't fit, the 6 cylinder they put in wasn't exactly small and it looks like there's plenty of space for the width of a V engine in there, if you can mount it slanted or further forward than the original straight unit.

There are a couple of minis that have used princess gearboxes with rover V8's fitted on them (not a straight forward swap mind )

Yes indeed.
Those vids above are pretty epic in a 70s BL sort of a way.

Northstar swap is an nice idea, the autobox is massive though. However there is a Golf Mk2 with this engine swap. I did a research putting this engine into a 480 (more as theoriatical exercise), but you can find dimensions, weight and other stuff: www.volvo-480-europe.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3607I like the styling of the Princess.

Austin in black, Wolseley in red. I really like both front end styles.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.
