Well unfortunatley the Rumph has gone into store for a while so I was after somthing else. this was going to be the Zephyr that was under threat of banger racing advertised on here last November. I was offered another for spares so all was looking good on that front But then.. I had a surprise phonecall from our dear Mr Hardcore telling me about a guy who has had this old Zodiac in storage after his uncle died some years ago There was some family arguments over the years about the car eventually leading to the instruction to get rid of it, and now! He was about to drag it over the weighbridge when the phonecall was made and he was persuaded to sell it to me rather than weigh it. This meant it had to be collected very quickly I had a chat to scoobypete and he agreed to help so off we went one snowy Sunday morning for the 3hr plus drive to the sunny Sussex coast, so we were told We eventually got there after watching the snow get deeper and laughing at people staring at us towing a 16foot trailer We found the car all wrapped up so tried to push it out but the diff had seized so we had to use extreme force to pull it out so we could see if we could fix it No fix so more brute force to line it up for the trailer All loaded, a guided tour of Hardcore towers and a well deserved cuppa we headed for home. As you can see we never even unwrapped it so driving home I still didn't know what I had bought The following day we had a peek and first looks were full of promise ;D We have only had a quick look but the findings are good nasty dent and a small hole in the roof where a webasto used to live but all in all a sound car. Big thanks to Andy for the call and Pete for the lift ;D ;D Things have progressed pretty fast so some posting catch up to be played

It would be nice to get a webasto back in her, 38 x 44 inch if you know of one will be driven as is for the time being Now back up the shed we can get a good look The car came with no papers, just the plate in the boot, which wasn't recognised by local spares place or DVLA Letters written to the MK3 club and DVLO Bristol came with the same result until Bristol found the chassis number papers now applied for although I was told not to fill out the reg number on the form, sounds like it was a random plate in the boot In the mean time the diff has been changed as the original was knackered The car is fitted with an overdrive as we have yet to get it running properly we can't check it. Rear brake cylinders have been unsiezed,, nipples removed ( 1 with stud extractor and 1 with welder ) , honed and rebuilt with new seals and fittings, next will be the M/C as the pedal is solid Main plan is to remove doors so we have better access and clean floors ready for paint. Might need more than a recharge on the battery,, especially if we want to drive the modern sound system Another view to show the work the PO did, hope we can make it worth his while

So when will the Rumph next be out? I was wondering what you were doing with this. It certainly looks to be full of promise . So, back on the road for the Beach Party? .

I do like these cars, ALOT...! What are your plans for it, will it be mildly modded or factory fresh? Whatever you do, good luck this looks like it's going to be a stunner...

Sadly the Rumph will be hiding for quite a while I think Hopefully the Zody will fill her shoes well Plan is along the rat rod lines to start as I want it done Later she will get tidier and lower and fatter wheels etc Work has been pretty fast on the old girl. Time to sort out some of the flaky paint and rusty patches Boot first, out with the tank and in with the wire brush and red oxide Now moving to the cabin This may take some work :/ Drivers door refitted with glass :~) Good news is we found 1 of the missing manifold pipes so had a pattern to copy to make the second and so it continues

zorst and inlet fitted Bought and fitted fuel pump rebuild kit as the pump wasn't :/ Running and starting on the key No idle yet but that can't be much. temp fuel tank as I had the original sand blasted and they found a tiny hole in the top :/ Floor looking good...more on this later :/ Master cylinder rebiult, front calipers proving difficult :/ Clutch works which was a surprise Lights floor dip switch won't hold main beam on though so having to replace that.

I like the Rumph too, hence the storage rather than scrapping . The previously good looking floor turned out to be not quite so good While Pete was using a knotwheel on the underside some holes opened up below the under seat crossmember Easiest way to repair was to remove it. crossmember some of the holes on the whole though it is pretty good and out with the disc cutter Prepping cut out and prepped.. getting there and back in again and from under Front calipers were seized solid but after some success with home made doohicky that fitted my hydraulic press, all pistons now removed

Awesome, I am envious of your awesome find. I hope to see this on the road soon What engine did the Zodiac have? is it the same 170ci/2.8l as they used in the mustang? If so a 67/68 mustang 250cui/4.1l should be almost a direct swap, a bit more grunty, and it also packs a pretty punch

How is your petrol tank? Mine was leaking, and so is the replacement I bought, even though it looked mint before fitting. One more thing... how heavy is that front bench seat??? ;D

The engine in the Mk3 was the final development of an engine that had first seen the light of day as a 1500cc four-banger in the brand new Ford Consul back in 1950. In six-cylinder form (and displacing 2262cc) it was introduced in 68bhp form in the Ford Zephyr Mk1 in 1951, and in higher-compression 71bhp form in the more luxurious Zodiac of 1953. The Mk2 was launched in 1956 and boasted a bigger capacity 2553cc version of the same engine, chucking out 86bhp in both Zephyr and Zodiac forms. The Mk3 came in April 1962, another compression ratio hike and different cam profile saw power climb to a whopping 106bhp from the same 2.6 litre capacity. There were two main tuning firms who specialised in these engines. Ruddspeed offered five states of tune to this engine when fitted to the AC Ace, the top-spec version developed 170bhp which was enough to power the AC to 60mph in 6 seconds with a top whack of 135mph. Raymond Mays also offered tuning parts for these engines. In what must be the ultimate form, the Superformance Stage 5, they built a Mk3 Zodiac with an overbore to 2.7 litres, forged pistons, aluminium cylinder head with 10.5:1 compression ratio, hot cam, lightened flywheel and triple Weber carbs. 222bhp was the result, which gave a maximum speed of over 140mph in overdrive top gear, 0-60 in 7.6 seconds and a sub-15 second quarter-mile time. Plus they sound like this. Not bad for a lump of Dagenham pig-iron designed in the late 1940's. ;D
