The Fiesta came out in '76 so it's certainly an old 'un by now! I'd most definately class a Mk1 as retro and I think they do look pretty cool. Anorak Question.. What engine/gearbox was fitted to Fiesta Prototypes? (Hint not a Ford unit as they hadn't a FWD layout at that time).

If I had 12k I think the first port of call would be an extension to the garage! Then maybe a nice early 60's Ford Econoline Pick up to stick in there.
Anything left over I'd probably put towards the ghia! Bloody money pit!

He could have had any marque of car for 12k - possibly even a Ferrari (I'm thinking of the 412 nobody seems to like much) Good 400s are available for about 12k (friend of my father's bought an ok one for 7k about 10 years ago), but IIRC, the values of 412s are still much more. BTW, this is the only Ferrari I'd want - either in dark grey or dark blue, and ever so slightly scruffy

12k GBP equals 17.600 euro ! That is a lot of money to spend on a Liana !!!
I would buy the following :
Ford Sierra Cosworth = 10k euro Fiat Cinquecento Kitcar (Gr.A rallycar) = 6k euro Mi16 engine for my BX = 1500 euro
...and I would still have 100 euro left for gasoline ;D ;D ;D

12K - Straight away it would be one of these Toyota 2000's: Might find a ropey one for 12K, if I'm really lucky. or Fiat Dino or Borgward Isabella Realistically I think a better idea would be a Quattro, Corrado VR6 or Lancia Delta Evo. And certainly not anything as ugly as a Liana! Even 12K gets you a half decent Renault Cleo 182, Fabia RS or Fiat Barchetta!

12k? It would have to be a Datsun 240z a Ginetta G15 and have enough left for a Sunbeam Stiletto.

Oh yeah, a 240Z! I forgot about one of those (how could I?!) To be honest I'd find it very hard to spent 12k on any car - I'd want cash left over to mod it, or buy another cheap retro to run around in while I do the other one! ;D I feel sorry for my mate really - he's not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to spending money. He got convinced by this yoof at Kwik-Fit that he needed a £65 high performance tyre for his spare on another car he had! .

Bet they were laughing all the way to the bank. Although I blame western throwaway culture too for people wasting cash on inferior or totally unneccasary stuff just because they're new or flash. Turn on the telly and adverts are telling you that unless you drive a new car you will be a social outcast and your girlfriend will leave you (anyone else know the insurance ad I mean where the guy pulls up in the tidy old bay-window camper and the GF squeals "I'm not getting in that!! ", then he pulls up in a mk 4 Golf convertible and everyone's peering out from behind the curtains and dead jealous?) and that unless you buy new expensive trainers your friends will laugh at you and unless you listen to the same sh*tty music as four and a half billion other curse word then you will die lonely. The fact is that if you listen to the adverts all that will happen is that you will be another duped and fooled tosser, who splashes out their cash on stupid stuff, but their life is no better for it. The only people who are better off are the suits who are pocketing your cash and living the life the punters wish they had with their hand made Italian shoes (made by orphans in Brazil or Cambodia who get paid a quid a month) and their Hello Magazine outlook on life. Ahem.

Benzboy: I under stand where you're coming from with the tyres thing, but it can make sense: I fitted some lovely Marangonis on the other half's Astra last time around rather than plumping for nasty budgets and it transformed the way the car drives (especially in the wet). Its also now fitted with some nice grooved drilled EBC discs with greenstuff pads. OK, so its still a rather dull (if quiet, comfy and economical) family wagon, but a few little upgrades like these can at least provide you with a little more comfort in the car's abilities in unpleasant situations! That said, what with my "connections" doing this still cost me less than it would cost average joe to go the budget route...

I agree NickB, it's surprising how much difference tyres can make! I omitted some vital information from my post though (would have made more sense if I'd have included it - doh!): a) his car at the time was a Shitroen AX 1.0 - more than likely unable able to top 150mph and warrant "Z" rated tyres. b) he was putting the car through an MOT to sell it. It failed on the spare. He never ceases to amaze me with his money squandering - it's painful to hear about!

Don't AX 1-litre's have solid tyres? Or have I got it confused withe the similarly styled and similarly-performing Silver Cross Pram...?

I'd have just taken the spare out.... and sent it back for a re-test! £65 for a tyre for an AX!! I paid a tenner less than that for the tyres I put on my BMW, and my Golf.... and they weren't curse word budgets either! Always cheaper to avoid Kwik-Fit and ATS I find.

I had two new tyres (Firestone F560 165/R15) put on the Amazon yesterday, for £52 each. Very good price, (cheers to Balham Tyres & Batteries, 020 86731950) especially as they were specially ordered, and other places wanted the same if not more for budget tyres!!
