I noticed today looking forlorn in a carpark a tidy ish mk3 ford fiesta that obviously hadn't moved in a while so made some enquiries and god am I glad I did. Turns out its something rather special and the best bit it could be mine if I can find space. Its a factory built fiesta fitted with a 3 cylinder two stroke engine of 1.3l. Apparently ford experimented with this power plant in the 90s but never put it into full production. So I think I may now have another rare piece of history to add to the fleet. Unfortunatly I didn't have a camera with me too take pics but mr google fu comes to the rescue with similar cars.

Few glugs of Castrol R is all that needs and you'll find people happy to stay behind you in traffic, window wound down with their head sticking out breathing in those lovely fumes. Well, that's what I'd be doing lol.

It was an experimental lean-burn engine to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Unfortunately the catalytic converter legislation halted it's development, and set fuel economy back years (since a cat needs a lambda of 1 to work properly, and the lean burn was much leaner than that).
IIRC, the KA was supposed to use this engine, but when the EU legislation was introduced the only engine Ford had that would fit in the engine bay was the venerable crossflow.

The owner described it as an airblast engine not quite sure what he meant. But apparently its fapping fast when its running.

found some information this looks like it could be a properly fun little car.
In 1992, Ford revealed an experiment to equip the Fiesta with an engine that looked as though it had been consigned, through its inability to meet increasingly demanding emissions regulations, to the dustbin of technology in the 1960s. A 2-stroke was equipped with a compressed air fuel metering system so precise that its emissions were relatively clean. Unburnt hydrocarbons no longer escaped in such profusion and the virtues of fewer moving parts, no valves, springs, camshaft or pushrods, 30% less weight, 12% better economy and 10% more power, persuaded Ford to run a programme running 3-cylinder 1200cc 2-strokes in 50 Fiestas for field trials. They were astonishingly smooth-running with none of the popping and banging associated with old-style two-strokes. A tank under the bonnet supplied oil to the engine for 12500 miles without refilling, but it turned out to be problematical in service and the experiment was concluded.
Weight: 870kg Engine: 1.2-litre 3-cyl, 80bhp @ 5500rpm, 90lbft @ 4000rpm. Sarich forced-air 6bar fuel injection system driven by reciprocating pump driven off crankshaft; sealed crankcase, reed valve intakes, engine 100mm lower and 70mm narrower than 4-cyl, roller-bearing forged one-piece crankshaft. Max speed: 104.7mph 0-62mph: 10.7s Average 49.6mpg

ooofff interesting. 75ish bhp from a 250 2 poke is easily achievable with a bit of fettling, i bet a 2 stroke wizard could have alot of fun with one of these! any idea where the redline is at? as toaster said, with something like a set of cr500 exhausts, it'd sound mental.

I do not know much. Only that it is two stroke I have seen the engine and is currently at the museum of internal fire.
There are two options that we discussed.
1. part with £300 and the car is mine.
2. The car would be taken to my college workshop brought back to life and then returned to the museum. Either way I get to work on this wonderful machine and again either way it will return to the road. The difference being whether I own it which comes with a fair few costs that I cant afford or just see it returned to the road.
Decisions decisions decisions.
p.s. SWMBO is going to have my guts for garters

Hang on... you're saying that it's currently in a museum, who want you to pay them for it, do all the work, then give it back to them? That sounds like a pretty crappy deal, doesn't it?
***edit*** Ah wait, I misunderstood. They're two different options. Disregard.
'Museum of Internal Fire' is a pretty awesome name, though.

Its also a pretty awesome museum. They had most of the engines running this morning.
Nothing like the sound and smell of a gas turbine engine burning 40 gallons of fuel in 45s
Or a 2500 litre 8 cyl diesel ticking over.
