This may read odd because I have copied it from my post on classic-audi, but what the heck... ... Well I have just bought a 'summer smoker' - an 87 2.2 automatic (boo!) which was a great price, however she needs a bit of tlc! Here's some pics: These were taken about 5 minutes after the cash was handed over so it really is "as is" here! It needs the following: - A damn good valet including close attention to all the rubbers and some minor detailing work, such as the black window surrounds which are faded black and need repainting. There is also a dent which needs pulling from the passenger side door. I am really looking forward to doing this because the previous owner has just driven the car everyday and not bothered about cleaning it much for about 5 year, but the paintwork is fundamentally good and largely original! - It needs the drivers side window sorting out (some sort of uninvestigated mechanical issue) . - there is a small ATF leak somewhere which I am hoping is a hose! - The expansion tank is cracked and needs changing ASAP! I have a spare set of wheels which I am going to get powder coated which should smarten things up somewhat! I am really looking forward to this project! If anyone has any advice re the above or any potential pitfalls I should know about please let me know! Also a couple of questions... Can you get replacement sunroof rubbers? And is it a headlining out job? What is the pcd and centre bore of the wheels? If anyone is near Leicester and fancies helping me out with any of the above let me know!

Quick update for the day... Collected the car this morning which went successfully, In a fashion The guy I bought it off had disconnected the battery because it has been standing for 3 weeks or so and I forgot to bring a spanner with me to tighten up the terminals. I knew what would happen but I had to get fuel to make the 15 mile drive to the MOT station... Needless to say the car wouldn't start in Asda petrol station in front of everyone and I had to push it off the forecourt and get help for a jump start. Embarrassing, and made worse by the fact that the car hadn't been cleaned for at least 2 years! Anyway I had a great run down to the test station, got stuck in approximately a mile of traffic which I was pleased about because I now know the car has no cooling issues to sort out... Here she is being tested: Pleased to report the car passed with almost flying colours, with just two advisories - NSR wheel bearing noise and OSF slight play in shock. Next stop was a quick jet wash: This made a massive difference as it hadn't been washed in yonks! And back home: The stereo was shoddy to say the least, a modern clarion unit which was poorly fitted and only one rear speaker was working. I removed the stereo and made all the wiring good. Also refitted the two rear speakers correctly. I was hoping to fix the fronts, but they both seem to be dead.... I usually test speaker orientation using a battery across the -+ which makes whichever speaker it is crackle slightly so you can tell which one is which... Tried to do this with both fronts after I'd traced the wiring but they are both completely silent. Odd, and I suppose I wll change them for new.... Any advice here appreciated! Also fixed the expansion tank with a hot flat blade screwdriver which will do the trick for the time being Next on my todo list is to clay bar and polish the car which I will do tomorrow if the weather holds out. I also will be repainting all the black window surrounds and the wipers etc as they are quite faded! Meanwhile, anyone know about the option codes on these? I tried to look online but can't see any info! Cheers!

Great car you have there, although I'm a bit biased :-) This is a good site for info, I used to have the 1.8 GT version. www.kvquattro.com

Day 2 of my ownership and some more progress has been made When all the interior bits are all sorted out and I have serviced the car etc I am going to get the bodywork looking as good as it possibly can. The sills need re-stone chipping again and it basically needs some general tidying. One thing I love about this car is that the paintwork is absolutely original and very honest, I hate cars that have had a load of cheap paintwork in the past! Anyway I bought a clay bar the other day to see what the fuss was all about. I had a small play this morning on a small section of the bonnet and the results are amazing, they make the paint feel like glass and the rest of the car like sandpaper! It will take me 5-7 hours to do the whole car which will be a base before I have the car mopped and all the black areas sorted out... A job for another day though! Here's a pic although it is probably hard to tell on the photo: The next thing I did was remove all the shi tty old alarm wiring out of the engine bay: Great fun! There is still some more work to be done here but the majority of it is out which I am pleased with. The old heater blower motor had play in the shaft causing some horrendous noises when the blades hit against the housing! Luckily the car came with a spare one so out with the old: Matrix is in good condition: And in with the new: I really wanted to clean the scuttle area properly but I lost my battle with the weather and it started to rain... So thats a job for another day Cowling back on: ... And back in the garage! More to follow...

Thanks man. I am hoping it will be a pretty special car when it is done, I'm just focussing on all the small jobs before I hit the cosmetics. I'm looking for a set of period obscure wheels for it actually - I just missed out on a set of Treser Quattro wheels which would have been awesome: I am thinking Borbet A's and a subtle drop could work...

New dash speakers fitted. Quite the mission since the original ones are bolted in from the underside of the dash so the lower half had to be removed. Also the oe speaker and housing is all one assembly so I had to make some modifications to get the replacements to fit under the OEM grills! Should have been simpler, could be worse! Got these in a halfords sale for a tenner and they sound pretty sweet to be fair! Finished! Speakers screwed down and I used some 3M foam tape to stick the grills down which worked well - I will clean the grill properly when I valet the interior!

Nice, will be the nuts when it got rims. I'm going for fake BBs RS on my B3, may work on this too. 9x16 would work on here.

I'm thinking 9x16 is about the limit, and I am scrared 15s will still look small. I am also slightly worried it will look rubbish with rims on stock suspension... I don't really want to compromise the ride in any way or lower it unless I have to - Your thoughts on this appreciated! I had a look on eBay actually and the fake BBS RS wheels actually look quite good... I am thinking about Borbet A's with flat centre caps could work too. Something obscure would suit (like Treser Quattro wheels or similar) but at this stage I haven't the inclination to spend hours searching! I've made a bit more progress on the car over the last few days - Drivers electric window motor and regulator changed which means I now have a working window Yay! The cables were completely shot on the old one. Cost me £30 to sort out (from VW Sanburn) which I didn't think was too bad... Also - Electric mirrors. What a two and eight this little board is in! A squirt of switch cleaner: And a quick rub down with wet and dry: Much better - And it cured the fault too! Changed the horrible wheel for the stock one too: Later style And I changed it to It's actually not in as good condition and needs a good feed but I much prefer it. Maybe I'll change it at a later date but it will certainly do for now The idea I have is to get it to the stage where it is in very very nice standard condition, and only at this point will I look at putting wheels etc on it... I am not a million miles away from starting on the bodywork and interior which is the part I am looking forward to the most!

Hmm interesting! The only thing is that I am literally obsessed with things being period, I really don't know why, and I am worried that because these are later wheels it would bug me! That said, pm me with details!

Good work so far. If you rim, you need to drop - no two ways about it. As for rims, see my avant, I think they look good on any audi. Made by the same people as the fake BBS. My B3 is 60/40 and the B4 coilovers and both drive smooth, its all about the choice of shocks imo. Just thought, if your comming to look at the quattro on sat, you can try a wheel from my avant to give you an idea. img840.imageshack.us/img840/3259/kres8male1.jpg [/img]

nice car ;D My mother used to have one back in the days, she always says that it was her best car... 341 : central door locking 416 =? 433 = radio wiring incl. 4 speakers 651 = electric windows 656 = ? 659 = fog lamps i would really advise you to have a careful look at the autobox, this is the weakest point of these cars, it generates back to the aircooled beetle area and they will be a problem .... if you come across a working autobox , just buy it to have a backup box there ....

Sumpcracker! Cheers for the offer mate - If I come down in the Coupe I will do if thats alright What are the wheels on that second pic? They are absolutely sick! Mrj - Thanks for the info matey, in what way are the boxes on these weak? It is occasionally slow to change into first - I mean, not really slow, but there is a slight latency of maybe half a second or so. I will be doing a transmission fluid flush at a later date, perhaps that will cure it... Having said that it changes very smoothly and feels robust - There is no slip or any other signs of a "b0lloxed box"! More progress today. It's strange this, just lots and lots of small and easy jobs and nothing particularly major or distressing. It's a pleasure to work on to be honest. First up I changed the coolant reservoir - It was very brittle and a pin hole appeared through some of the crazing just before I got the car which I had bodged by heating up a screwdriver and reheating the hole. It worked, although it bugged me.... So... Changed for a used but very fresh replacement: Much better! Next job was something I was expecting to be a lot more difficult (don't you just love a simple fix!)... The rear wiper wasn't working. First port of call - The fusebox! Low and behold the fuse was in a right state. I could have replaced it but I like saving things so I cleaned it up with a bit of wet and dry... and .... It worked!! "WIN" I had been meaning to have a good look around the sunroof and make sure the drainholes are clear etc, and basically inspect it for any signs of impending doom. The seal is in a state and will be replaced some time soon: A little bit of crud on one side of the sunroof panel: To be cleaned up at a later date - It looks bad on the pic but it is only surface rust... I will sort it out when I am off work next week. The good news is all the important bits are in great shape with not a hint of corrosion: Drain holes were not blocked either but a I ran a bass guitar string (great tip!) down them just to be sure. Not sure what the next task will be but no doubt I will have further updates soon - I can't leave this car alone!

Almost forgot to mention - last night I removed the wipers and gave them a fresh lick of paint just to tidy them up a bit... Refitted them earlier and they are looking good

More stuff done on the car today Spent the day at my friends bodyshop tinkering and got the following sorted: - full machine polish/mop, with a great result! - rear bumper off, straightened and refitted. Also gave the car a good clean underneath the bumper which was a satisfying job. - new stereo fitted... Old school Panasonic snatch plate with a 3.5mm jack input on the front! Great for iPods, despite being 20 odd years old! This is temporary until I find a nice Blaupunkt but I am happy with it... - stone chip paint removed from sills. I was going to repaint them but they look better in the body colour finish so they are being left for now! Pics: Retro! (^^^ note the trashed mount hole area! Small rust spot on the rear quarter edge ground out and touched in too although it is below the bumper line) Half mopped! This was a satisfying job... Zender / Momo steering wheel to be fitted when my boss arrives!! Jobs for tomorrow: - Wheels off to be powder coated - side window surrounds repainted black - interior valet - bumpers/brightwork etc polished and linseed oiled - and anything else I have time for! I will post some pics of the finished bodywork tomorrow but I am really pleased with the progress so far!

Got the window surrounds painted today and a few other bits although I didn't have a chance to take photos... I am going to valet the car tomorrow and take some nice pics. It is starting to take shape now, I can't wait to get my wheels back from the powder coaters next week! Thought about black or white, but opted for a slightly-darker-than-stock silver in the end! Just the one pic:
