Thanks Brian. The guy turned up with three of his Uncles who each systematically poked and prodded everywhere around the car including one banging the point of his car key into the sill because he thought I was lying when I said there was no rust! He tried to tell me that the front wings weren't original and wanted to see as many photos as possible because he doubted me about the pre-NATO paint condition (so I had all four squeezed into my study while they made me pull up LOADS of photos of the car throughout the build) To top it all he even asked me if it was a 'straight' MOT!!! "I'll get it tested myself so if it's not legit, you've got the chance to tell me now" WTF???!!! Anyway, I've calmed down a bit now and the car is now advertised on PistonHeads as per Gav's recommendation. Thanks Dude. Here is the for sale advert...if anyone can think of anything I should add/amend, please let me know? www.pistonheads.com/sales/3901657.htmAlso a cheeky (but rubbish phone) shot of the car with the hard top fitted. I can't believe I've not had it on the car before....I think it looks AWESOME with it on! Thanks again for looking everyone and also for the kind comments. ;D

Timewasters are a bummer. Especially if they think they know what they are talking about. Hang in there Mate. You only need one genuine buyer.

Bruce, my old GS300 sold within a day on PH, let's home you have similar luck.
I'd pull all the irrelvant information out of the ad though, such as references to Joe's Aixam etc, as most readers of the ad won't have a clue what you are on about.

Well, that was fun...another whole day lost on another complete time waster. I really don't understand what it is about this particular car that's bringing out the tyre kickers and messers? I've never had this kind of trouble before.
Anyway, the car is still for sale and I am happy to listen to any sensible offers for it. I'm even starting to think about breaking it and selling all the parts off, but that would be a real shame because it really is a very, vry nice and well put together car.

They just don't seem to be selling well at the moment mate! I've only had people tell me they are interested and then not turn up! Apart from one guy who did have a look around it when I wasn't with the car. Don't break it, this thig is awesome. Wish I had the cash, I'd have bought it! GLWTS!

I really don't understand why you indulge them for so long, Bruce. Even the most fastidious of buyers should need more than an hour to decide if a car is any good or not. Any longer than that and they are clearly just finding something to fill up their spare time, and you should call it a day.

It certainly can be trying process! i sold a car a couple of years back. The guy travelled from the other end of the country with his folks, went over the car in detail for 3 hours, said he wanted it and then tryed to get me to move on the price. He did at least take the car in the end!
I've also refused to budge even by a tenner before just because of the buyers approach and attitude. Can be frustrating, but good fun at times as well!!

didnt realise you still had this up for sale would have thought it would have sold well as its properly put together unlike 90% of modified/restored mx5s I've seen out there and £3500 is a steal for the amount of work that went into it imho (if I had a spare 3.5 k... sadly house move etc makes that out of the question.. don't suppose youll swap for a tatty alfa 147? no? didn't think so ) shame you had so many idiots coming to see it, one of the reasons I hate selling cars are those type, seem to be worse if you sell anything older or unusual as they assume the seller knows 0 about them (when usually they're clueless anyway) good luck with the sale though,

The thing that is bugging me ( and it's probably a dumb question) is why the 1.6 and not the 1.8? If i was going to put that much time and effort in then i'd always start with the premium model.

I really don't understand why you indulge them for so long, Bruce. I didn't say anything about indulging them. The guy said he'd be arriving late morning/early afternoon from Bradford so I waited around as anyone would. At 1pm he rings apologising that he'd got held up with last minute work stuff but will be leaving within the hour so should be arriving sometime between 6pm and 7pm (possibly the latter due driving through the rush hour) so I cancelled what I'd planned to do in the afternoon and waited. That was the last I heard from him. A full day wasted. Not sure how I could have played it any other way, other than telling him I didn't want him to come and view the car? (unless arranging for someone to view a car is classed as indulging them?) The thing that is bugging me ( and it's probably a dumb question) is why the 1.6 and not the 1.8? If I was going to put that much time and effort in then i'd always start with the premium model. The 1.8 isn't a 'premium' model particularly. Maybe over the 90bhp 1.6 version but mine is the earlier full power 1.6. The 1.8 might have a few more bhp and torque on paper, but in reality it's a much less revvy engine. Great around town where the extra bit of low down torque makes it a bit more 'punchy' but show it an open road and the 1.6 is so much more fun. I'm not saying the 1.8 is worse in any way, but there are as many people out there who prefer the 1.6 as there are who prefer the 1.8, myslef included. They are different to each other rather than better than each other. If you ever get the chance, drive one of each and you'll see what I mean. g111mds and Ratchet, thanks also for the comments. Fingers crossed someone who will actually really appreciate the car will be along before too long.

I don't want to spam this thread because it's a for sale thread after all, however this kind of timewasting just seems to be getting so common. Or perhaps it's always been around and the couple of cars I've ever sold I've been relatively lucky with.
You know a great deal more than me when it comes to this kind of thing, and it would no doubt be a shame, but I'd seriously be considering parting it out now.

It sounded like someone came and poked and prodded the car for hours on end, like the last bloke.

selling anything is hard at the minute. buyers simply don't have the 'cash' they used to. cos they either didnt have it in the first place and their lifestyle was based on the credit they could get and now cant, or 'cos the economic downturn has reduced their disposable income. the more the car costs, the more this will be felt. ive had just as frustrating an experience with the lada. what gets me most is that all these 'buyers' seem to know far more about the car that I built than I do. the second they start telling me about my car, what its worth, or anything else about it is when I stop talking to them. I'm fed up of people trying to talk my car down to get it for less, whilst trying to talk up the usually rubbish p/x they're offering that blatantly isnt worth what they value it at. especially when its cars I already own/have owned so know very well what they're worth!
I think we've all spent too long pandering to buyers and being polite to them in the illusion of not offending them and loosing a sale. I for one am getting increasingly more curt with buyers until they prove to me they're genuine and not a total idiot. i now wont re-arrange anything i'm doing to fit in a viewing, they can work around me, as at least 9/10 of em never turn up once we've agreed a time. a genuine buyer wont be put off by me being short with them(short as in quick, brief answers, not being rude or not replying) and conversely I don't waste hours of my life replying to people who didnt have the means to buy my car in the first place.

Thanks for the comments guys.
I have come to a decision that might help it sell more easily (famous last words!)
The new selling price is £3,000 but that doesn't come with the GRP bootlid or the stainless 4 branch manifold. Obviously if a prospective buyer wants them, they have the chance to buy them at extra cost (£175 for the bootlid which is cheap and £100 for the manifold, again a very good price)
Further still, I would be willing to sell the car without the hard top or the RS Active headlights (returned to standard headlights) for £2,500.
Basically it's now for sale exactly as seen in the photos for following prices:
£3,275 for the car as shown with EVERYTHING included.
£3,000 as seen in the photos but without the few extras I was throwing is as part of the deal
£2,500 as seen in the photos but with standard round pop-ups and no hard top....still a LOT of car for the money.
I think this represents a remarkably good deal for an MX5 built to this standard with all the parts that it'll still come with and if it helps it to sell, then I guess that can only be a good thing.

I've not bumped this at all because I've had someone 'dead keen' to view it. Well, after two solid days getting things moved from the unit to home (hard top, spares etc..) and making the car as perfect as possible (not that it needed much, but you know what I'm like)....then MOT'ing the car at the guys specific request ready for the viewing today.... .....four men arrive and spend THREE SOLID hours asking every question under the sun, going over the car with the finest toothcombe numerous times, two test drives and having to show numerous photos of the car to verify that it wasn't a rust bucket (!!!! WTF??? !!!) even though one of them had read the whole build thread. They then go off for "20 mins to discuss" - over two hours later I get a text: "My Dad doesn't like it." SERIOUSLY! 5 hours of the most intense car viewing ever, a freshly MOT'd and completely faultless car and your Dad doesn't like it? Suffice to say I am currently very, very, very peed off. Fuming in fact. But the car is still for sale if anyone wants it. It looks fricking AWESOME with the hard top on (photos to come when I get chance to take any) and I guess part of me is glad it hasn't sold to those people if they mess people about in that way. I think the car deserves a far better home.... Sorry to go on, I guess it just hurts when you put a huge effort into presenting a perfect car which you've spent hundreds of hours of love on, only to be told they "don't like it". It's not like they could pick any faults with it? This is pathetic. These cockwhelks should be ashamed of themselves, I hope they are reading. To pi55 you about for 3 hours with endless ridiculous questions and then turn it down BY TEXT (they haven't even got the backbone to ring you up!!!) on such a spurious pretence is a fuggin disgrace. I know you are far too decent a chap to do it, but if they are a member on here you I think should name and shame em so I can give them the big FO if the ever express any interest in owt i'm selling!
