I didnt know if this was oily enought to go in the tech bit.
If your car doesnt have a speedo (not a working speedo, but no speedo at all), is it an MOT fail? I'm sure it does but recent discussions have sown doubts..

My old Corsa went through three MOTs with the speedo not working, but that was at least three years ago now so I assume things have changed then.

^That wasn't the question though - it was whether an absent speedometer would pass.

Don't think so, I'm afraid.

Would a sat-nav mounted to the screen do I wonder...? No. I can't remember the exact reason but it's something like it has to work all the time (i.e. not dependent on GPS signal) - I am sure someone with more knowledge can give a better response but I do remember reading that sat-nav or other GPS based speedo reading devices are not acceptable.

I hate being right. So does anyone know of a pulse sender universal speedometer that isnt a pile of junk and works? One that also looks deecent might be a bonus too...

A GPS unit should get you out of jail there, no? (Edit: sorry, took too long to post).
Serious point though, I know a couple of people who do exactly this with modified cars and bikes. I suppose it comes down to the tester. A mod-friendly or even a bike-friendly MOT place might be okay with it. The units in question were older Garmin bike models so they're smaller and have a smaller screen that can be switched into dashboard mode and just have big numbers showing the speed.
Is it worth calling your MOT place and asking them what they'd do if you presented it with a GPS unit?

Why not gaffer tape a non-functioning speedo to the dash for the test? If you have to have one there but it doesn't have to work, that's an easy fix.

I think you'd have to make it look quite convincing if you did: "Reason for rejection: Speedometer not complete or clearly inoperative"

I've had this a few times (not surprising knowing my stuff and mot's) speedo has to be fitted speedo glass has to be uncracked / needle not obscured / blocked speedo does NOT have to work! - but, dash clocks have to be illuminated when the lights go on, which we might be a *little* shaky on in the truck - I'm really not looking forward to the next MOT...

Almost on the road: b11 sunny breadvan, e36 tds, 325i skidcar,
nearly there: ford f250 tathauler, suzuki alto, u11 bluey
not for a while: ford pop, 32 rails,
not in this lifetime: ruby, '29 hillman
''unfortanatly I'm quite old and scruffy and in need of some loving. my drive shaft needs a new boot....''

I have seen a bicycle computer used, you can get backlit ones, would be a doddle to fit and they are as accurate as the person fitting it.

id just(and have previously) fit any old speedo, connect up the illumination, and leave it at that. as kev has clariefied above, it has to be fitted, have good glass, and light up, but they don't test if it works.
having an additional sat-nv/gps sytem in there is just a blatant admission that the speedo fitted doesnt work!

Also, you could attract an additional fail for the sat nav obscuring the driver's view of the road... I put them in the glovebox with the magic tree from the mirror before starting a test The prob with using a satnav as a speedo is that you can't clearly and quickly read the speed on most of them! A GPS derived speedometer signal (like say a serial GPS and arduino driving a LED display on the dash) would be fine.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

speedo does NOT have to work! It does now. 2012 MOT Directive 2009/40/EC7. Other Equipment 7.8 Item: Speedometer Method: Visual Check Reason for Failure: a) Not fitted in accordance with requirements. b) Not operational. c) Not illuminated.

That's typical the MR2 has had no speedo for the last 2.5 years now they go and spoil things, time to go find the correct speedo sensor for the wrong gearbox on the MR2 so I can have a speedo that is still no use as its in KM's.
