"400" means TH400. Thats how mine was when I got it, now its hanging with rot. They deteriorate if not looked after. Anchor wax and the like will be needed to preserve that patina without it ending up a wreck. I'm about crying looking at mine

To be perfectly honest I don't even think this needs lowering, it looks fupping ORSUM as-is. There is something about a bone-stock 4dr yank barge that is just inherently cool, it really doesn't need owt else done to it. Just my two penneth worth

That's the gearbox, yeh? Good strong box? Thats how mine was when I got it, now its hanging with rot. They deteriorate if not looked after. Anchor wax and the like will be needed to preserve that patina without it ending up a wreck. I'm about crying looking at mine I guessed that might be the case...seeing as it wont fit in my garage (and there's a '66 HA Viva in the way too) its gonna get serious protection on the bottom and anywhere I can squirt into and the paint will either get completely re-done or protected. I do love the patina but it's not wholly practical in this climate. I just read your thread about your '66 and it's made me sad

TH400 is almost bullet proof. I have killed one though. At least yours is the "common" spec internals - its pretty much standardised from 1968-1990 or when ever the last one was made. Even the MOT tester is giving me big guilt over the deterioration of my '66

I'm toying with shipping over a nice lumpy cam to slide in, as at some point I'll get twin straight-thru pipes installed and that would just top off the sound nicely. I think I've found one thats good with the stock 'box...knowing that it's strong is reassuring though. Is the '66 too far gone d'ya reckon? Would be a shame

Very, VERY nice choice my man! But will definitely look better lowered. Thinking springs in half would sort it out?

Very, VERY nice choice my man! But will definitely look better lowered. Thinking springs in half would sort it out? I'm not going mad on this one. One of the reasons I stopped driving the Cedric and eventually fell out of love with it was the fact it was too low for the roads around here to enjoy driving it properley. This will be getting 2 1/2 maybe 3 inches out of the ride height just to improve the profile. The eventual bagging of it (a few years down the line) will sort out everything else ;D

TA Performance are the people to speak to about performance do-dads - the 350 isn't quite as well served as the 455/430 but there is stuff out there. Shame Postons went to the wall as they did a fair bit of 350 stuff. I have one of their cams in my 340.
Nothing is too far gone if you are determined enough, have the skills and the budget. We shall see.

I'm not majorly concerned with performance upgrades in all honesty... just toying with ideas. I think some new pipes and a cam would transform the sound and unleash a bit more torque but that's probably where I'd leave any engine mods.
I have a plan in my head something a bit like this:
a) Weatherproof it! b) Cut the springs b) Personalise the thing a bit, little accessories and touches to make it feel 'mine' c) Install a modest, but decent, sound system d) New exhaust(s) - this will be a while until I can afford it e) Paint (maybe) f) Wheels (maybe) - Torq Thrusts or Astros, nothing crazy g) Bags. This will be at least a year or two!
I'd like to just kinda 'Mild Kustom' it, a few choice changes but mainly enjoy using it. I always prefer driving them to working on them, and have neither the skills, patience or attention to detail that big plans need in order to work. I learnt a lot with the Cedric about myself and my attitude to car projects and I wont be making the same mistakes again (I hope)

Unless, Akku (or others) can recommend simple ways to upgrade the engine? Basically, I'm not too bothered about top end, I'm all for a bit more 'snap' or torque at the bottom of the power band. Number 11's on the tarmac, not on the time board

1969 is about the best year for factory built engines. You still have decent compression and cam from stock. Qjet is a good carb too.
You're not going to gain much without spending strong money on it.
I've got a 70s 350 Olds for my white Buick. Basically my plan for that it to put it to a sort-of 1968/9 factory spec...
I'd install a Pertronix ignition or convert to HEI because I hate points.
Other than that?
Cam and nice dual plane intake (air gap type) plus headers would be nice but is it the best way to spend like £750? Your call.

I believe your plans to drop and just roll are spot on.

but is it the best way to spend like £750? Your call. Hmmm, not really hahaha Maybe I'll just tart the bay up a bit. The factory air works-ish, but I'll probably strip that out and get some dress-up for it all, some cheap shiny bits to make it look faster Now, off out to figure some kinda hidden stereo...
