The Corolla will be an EE80 model ('0' may be substituted for some other number) Should be running a carby 12V 2E 1300cc motor, these things are bulletproof and take one hell of a thrashing, typical Toyota style. There's still loads of these cars around as a result, here at least. They did suffer from minor rust issues, usually hatches, doors, check inner guards and firewalls, standard old car stuff anyway really. Other than that, nothing really goes wrong with them aside from expected wear and tear with age. We had major problems with paint finishes with certain colours on locally produced vehicles. If you were to get carried away, the EP71 Starlet GT 4E-FTE turbo motor would be a bolt in swap, however wiring looms and whatnot would prove the issue

I reckon these are freakin' awesome! I love the fact that they have "corolla" written on the hubcaps banded/wide steels (so's not to lose the hubcaps), j-stretch tyres and a slam FTW I'm not much help other than that, sorry!

In Britain they suffer from MAJOR rust issues (but not as bad as next gen EE90/AE90/AE92 range ). On EE80/AE80/AE82 (1983 -1987) Corollas look for rust/rot/corrosion On ... Front wing arch Rear wheel arch Sunroof (if fitted MAJOR problem) Around windscreen rubber ...mainly across top Rear Tail gate (if wash wipe fitted see it 'fall through' due to rust around it ) Back of sill ...M.O.T Fail Inside back of inner sill and continuining to where rear torsion bar mounts ...M.O.T Fail and probably uneconomic to repair ...PLEASE,PLEASE CHECK THIS! Rear shock absorber/suspension turret mounts ...M.O.T Fail and again probably uneconomic to repair and Please check here before you buy (grab suspension spring and shake to see if 'breaking loose'! Front wheel drive Corolla's of ALL the EE/AE range versions (83 to 2001**)ROT or will rust just like the good old R.w.d versions did ;D ;D **okay so EE/AE 111 version from 1997 TO 2001 still abit new but the metal is pretty thin so Look Out in the future!

I had a later (than above) Corolla '92 IIRC with the 1300 12v engine with 187,000 miles and it went like a dream but the whole car was rotten and isopon! In the boot 'pockets' of rust form like this : ..as did a few old Toyotas!

Damn! ...knew I'd forget summat! Petrol filler tube/pipe (going from neck/cap to tank) it rots out terrible... Toyota did a realy good job of rust proofing this ...NOT ...in other words it was spray (read 'misted') with one coat of black paint. Not only that it partially sits directly in the firing line of road muck from the one rear wheel ...Brilliant! And don't worry if it finally rots out/splits when filling up with petrol because it won't spill onto the forcourt/floor ...it is actually positioned (by those superb geeks at Toyota) to fill your boot up instead ... So PLEEEEEEASE check that as well (New filler pipe is Toyota only part at £143 ) Mechanically if is the 5speed version check gearbox does not throw out of 3RD or 5TH 12V 2E 1300ish Engine has a cambelt and is one of the Toyota engines where Valve and Piston will meet (alot of Toyota engines are none interferance but NOT this one) if it breaks ...so if no history of a change GET IT DONE ...and use a GENUINE TOYOTA BELT. Good Luck

I guess more rust can only be attributed to salt on the roads eh?

More SALT? Didn't think you guys used any Plus we get a lot of 'General Dampness', not actually minus conditions but just a lot of wet weather so I suppose although our cars rust like mad it's not to cold that we can't 'tack' em back together again ;D

^ Not so normal ... ... for a 1987-1992 EE90/AE90/AE92 should be MUCH WORSE THAN THAT!!! ;D ;D ;D ...no offense meant **In fact it should have worked it's way round to taking the torsion bar mount (see a little 'inch' of torsion bar forward of tyre in the arch area) out by now** Retro Mat : Oh No I hope I haven't offended ..I was trying to warn. Sad thing is Corollas ARE reliable for first 8 years or so of life, hence they 'Win' all the consumer surveys. But as we all know your average person only has a car under 10 year old so thus will never ever discover the faults we have to rectify. And if you think I'm against F.W.D Corollas ...far from it ...I have TWO only both mine I have owned from a young age and when in their early years I heavily waxoiled them ...and still do.

twincam don't worry you haven't offended! thanks for the heads up. If i found a tidy one i would defiantly snap it up, the problem is currently i don't have much money so need a cheap car that i don't need to spend money on. ;D
