Today, I have mostly been jacking up a Clan, freeing off brakes with a BFH, winching it onto a trailer, paying, doing paperwork, having it towed (by my Dad = legend ;D), rolling it off the trailer, and storing it. A few photos were taken, but will have to wait until I buy an SD card reader - lost my camera cable. More soon. ;D (Sorry Mark )

One of the cars I always wanted after first seeing them competing at hillclimbs and sprints when I was a youth.

Right, I've still not found an SD card reader in the shops. Well, not for sensible money - I refuse to pay £12 for one. So I've ordered one online, which will take a couple of days to arrive. Few more pics then. This evening I nipped up to the storage yard earlier to have a poke about and to grab a couple of shoddy photos with my phone - I've got a cable for that. I'll apologise for the quality now, so I don't upset the camera mafia. So, without further ado, pics: Look, it's a Clan-shaped thing It's still there! Maybe going in behind it will scare it off? Seems not. It has an engine, although it's a bit scabby. But it was supposedly rebuilt not long before it came off the road, and the oil is lovely and clean. Not tried to turn it though. It even has an interior... ...complete with a dashboard and an awesome steering wheel. There's a decent bit of storage space behind the seats - that's the top of the passenger backrest on the right. Sadly, there's some rotten plywood in here too - this is the inner sill skin below the passenger door. Shouldn't be too bad a job though. There's even a bit of storage in here - and room for the spare wheel. Although that's currrently here... ...because the other alloy doesn't hold air. But what's this? Banding? And stretch*? I thought this was a 70s car? Thankfully, the 1" Grayston Death Spacers uphold the best traditions of car modifying in the 70s. That's it for now. I will just say that when we collected it I was pleasantly surprised at how solid the suspension arms were - my recollection was that they were much worse. The plans are to sort out the plywood, go over the running gear replacing whatever needs it (expecting kingpins - somewhat seized - wheelbearings, bushes, obviously brakes, tyres, etc.), rebuild the sporty l4 from the Imp, fit that in this, and swap over the brakes, driveshaft couplings and steering from the Imp. Then sort out anything else needing attention, insure, MOT, tax and drive it. Not bad considering it's been off the road for 30 years... Can't wait to get properly stuck into this. ;D *155/80R12 on something around 5.5" or 6" wide.

Looks in a lot better shape than my g15 James! Think you've done well - jelous a bit ..... Cheers - I'm pretty happy with it's condition, and am quite glad it's complete: fitting out a bare shell would be a lot of work. Just in case anyone is wondering about the background: I first thought of getting one last summer, but a lack of funds and a largely unsaleable Imp put paid to that. Back in March, I found some fairly extensive rust in the Imp - I knew it had some rust, but didn't think it was that bad: it suffered quite a bit last winter, and another winter on the road would finish it off entirely* - so decided to start the hunt again. While browsing the Clan Club for sale page, I found this advert: As I was in a postion to buy now - and looking for a project - I phoned up and had a chat with the vendor. I was a little nervous that it might have sold already, but I was in luck. I went up to have a look at it on 31st March, and - finding that it was exactly what I was after - left a deposit to secure it until I could arrange collection.

Aren't there more modern alternatives than plywood (even in marine spec )? Somekind of foam, perhaps? Love the look, wouldn't change/improve that!

Rich - if it turns and has compression, it should run. Trouble is one of the carbs is a bit jammed. Might strip it down to see what the crank is like though. Like the engine in Bruce's white lotus, the alternator is solid - it's been outside for a while... EB - The trouble with alternatives to ply is that they are very expensive. Yes, you could lay up glass on a foam core (although it would be tricky to get down inside the sill...), but there's an awful lot of area to cover, and it would have to be thick to get enough rigidity in that flat panel. Marine ply is cheap (in this thickness), strong, and long-lived. Especially when properly coated all over in epoxy resin. As I'll be doing. ;D The main reason it rots out there is that there's an access panel for the hinges in the back of the front inner arch, which rarely seals properly, so water and road muck get in. The muck blocks the drain holes, and the water rots the ply, which seems only to be coated in glass on the visible face. And I think the resin that they used was polyester - not as waterproof as epoxy. I will be paying close attention to the sealing of that access panel, too: the water rots out the door hinges, too.

...because the other alloy doesn't hold air. But what's this? Banding? And stretch*? I thought this was a 70s car? Both very much 70's features, banding was the cheapest way to get wide wheels and stretch because it was difficult to find wide tyres. Good luck with the king pins, could turn out to be a real heat it and beat it job. Usually ended up having to saw through the king pins and knock them out in three pieces.

Yeah, I remember the ones on the Imp being a pain. I can say that they are a little stiff to turn at the moment, so I'm expecting fun... The 70s comment was slightly tongue in cheek as people keep saying that they didn't modify cars in the current "retro" style in the 70s.

If your keeping the comics then I have a set not too far away from you! (I fact 2 are still on the g15 chassis!) then you could have 2 sets! Think i have 5 cosmics in total (will have to check) do you a deal for your single banded wheel (always wanted to see what my car would look like with banded 12's on stock tyres)
