Well, with the Cooper finally selling the other week, it was time to get a new daily. The big problem was what to buy, budget wasn't massive, but there was still loads of different routes I could have gone down. I started to lean towards another MX5, but some sole searching of what I needed over the next 12 months meant that a larger estate was what fitted the bill. So the search was on, ended up being outbid last min on B5.5 Passat with LPG, and had a narrow escape on a B5 Passat 1.8t that had 50% more miles than it claimed. Then came an offer from Hardcore "you could always buy my old red Audi...." This was a car that I had hankered after the last 2 times it had come for sale, but timings wasn't right, but now everyting was falling into place. Sadly, it no longer had the coilies or the alloys (Andy selfishly keeping those for his white TDi ), so instead of looking like this it now looks like this but things are in hand to sort that A pair of KW front coilies come up for sale from PhilJ, and after much dithering a price was agreed and a plan to collect them on my way home hatched (I hate having stuff posted) So this morning was time to make the 3 1/2hr train ride to go and collect it. Andy duely picked me up from the station and (after a small detour to get the V5 ) we were off to the autobarn were it turned out that Phil was also heading to to help lower a certain Fiat. So that saved a trip So after a tour of the autobarn, funds were exchanged and paperwork filled on and I was on my way home and it was a very pleasant drive too Couple of niggles arose, the stereo has no power going to it (should a fuse, it had a working stereo in it before), the fuel gauge has stopped working, the bonnets not latching down on the pass side and there is a splutter below 2k if you give it more than 1/2 throttle (I suspect a service is in order and sitting for 8 months hasn't helped it) So plans, well I will be off to protec tomorrow to see what they can do for the rear coilies, and then it will be returning to a nice low status (not quite as low as before sadly, but will have the capability to) and need to give these a lick of paint and get them fitted and a dam good polish, it is a bit on the pink side at the mo

Bookmarked! Good to meet you today mate, I hadn't twigged that you were Mr. 1010cc I was a bit miffed when Phil said "Oh by the way I've got to go and meet someone to sell my coilies" as I didn't fancy giving him a lift anywhere and came then the happy coincidence when we realised we were all converging on the same place! Clearly meant to be. Looking forward to seeing what happens to this.

Sadly looks like the rear suspension needs a plan B for the minute, so PhilJ has sourced me a new pair of lowered FK shocks cheap and a set of 'adjusted' springs will be going onto the back. A set of coilies will go on at somepoint, but funds are better being spent on giving it a good service (major service kit on route from eurocarparts for £120 inc a cambelt ). The fuel gauge seems to have come to life (but if its to be believed I got over 45 MPG so far ) and the stereo is confusing me at the mo. I've got 12v coming (only a perm live, they don't have a switched live) so not sure why thats not working? so need a bit more digging I think

Well, a bit more progress On the stereo front, I've 'adjusted' the Sony's loom to feed both the prem live and the switched live feed from teh perm live wire (seems Audi's only have a prem live on the ISO ) which now has a resulted in a working stereo, but if I have the stereo running with the ignition off, the dash warning lights come on Also got a full service kit for it inc a camblet kit, not bad for £120 and the wheel bolts have turned up this morning too. Also made a start on trying to turn it red again (I'm not manly enough to drive a pink car ;D) stuck a layer of dodo juice wax on the roof, it sunk into the paint before I could buff it off! So tried autoglym super resin over the bonnet, boot and driver’s side and seems to have worked well (so think I need to ‘feed’ the paint first with polish and then wax to seal it) And the fuel gauage has stopped working again

Mine was similarly pink, and filthy die to not having been washed for years. I went down the route of
1. Claying (Blu-tac works and a shampoo/water solution works if you've no actual clay). 2. T-cutting. This brought the red and the shine out but I always seem to end up with a slightly patchy finish. However, I didn't have much SRP and T-Cut is cheaper 3. A couple of coats AG SRP 4. A coat of AG Extra-gloss protection. It's beading up like a good-un and will hopefully stay red

I think your right that it needs a cut back first and then a polish up afterwards, but thought it was worth a go 1st with just a polish (see how bad the paint is 1st)

Well some progress has been made, it now has alloys So I dug out the brown rims I had on my Passat, a trip (or 2, used far more black than I expected) and they are now repainted in ford Panther black (same colour as the wife Ka, always handy to have a bit of paint on hand ) So, today I finally got them on Does highlight the comedy ride height at the mo with the TDi springs on, and I think they could do with some spacing out on the rear but over all I'm pretty chuffed with them Couldn't resist doing a V bad photo chop of a reduced ride height Running wise, the cough seems to come and go, and 1st refill showed 32 MPG (and 25% of that was round town) so pretty pleased with that. So next stage is the suspension, hopefully soon

Well, some progress (but not a lot ) I've repainted the grill (to banish the bits of chrome poking through were the paint had flaked off, so that looks a lot better and my rear shocks/ front springs have arrived Got a provisional slot booked with Bruce for Wednesday to start operation lows Tried to crack on with the service over the last few days (bad back and working on a drive in the rain is hindering progress), started on the air filter (which looked decididly manky) and a few holes may have appeared in the airbox whilst it was apart ;D ), went to swap over the new cap and rotor arm, the rotor is definatly different, and the cap wasn't seating well so have cleaned up the originals and refitted them (there was quite a bit of carbon dust and build up on the faces which I removed), but the cough is still there after it has warmed up a bit Hopefully if the rain holds off, tomorrow i can stick in a new set of plugs and leads and then try to get a correct rotor arm/dizzy cap next week

Well, plugs and leads completed, they were well over due replacing with a couple of the leads coming apart as I removed them. So hopefully that should help in the mission to make it run a bit smoother

Well some progress has been made, but was a struggle Audi finally came good with the new ECU relay this morning (what was thought to be the cause of the low rev cough), so I though I'd crack on and change it this afternoon, it'll only be a quick 5 min job After unbolting the lower section of dash, I eventually found the relay, swapped it over and tried the ignition. All the lights come on, but nothing so an hour of sorting through wires under the dash, and I find that a wire had been cut and rejoined on the back of the ignition barrel So out with the soldering iron and that's repaired properly and back in action. Quick test drive after putting it all back together, and the mis has gone

A productive day thanks to the help of Bruce Sadly no pic's taken by me, Bruce took some 1/2 way through which he'll add later The day didn't start too well, the aftermarket electric window switch on the drivers side stopped working (when fully up) but turned out it was trying to wind the window up for about the last 30 mins of my drive. When I got to A52 and popped the switch is was quite warm and the battery was pretty flat when I went to restart but it started and we moved the Audi inside. Plan was hatched, do 1 side at a time as I wanted to swap the wheels front to back. Quick measurement and 3.5-4" was the desired drop 1st job, remove the rear strut, strip it down, build it up on a new FK lowered damper and a stock spring - 2 coils and the bumpstop shortened. Then the front strut out, stripped and the KW coilover rebuilt and set fairly low (still had about 1" of threads and helper springs are still in there). With it dropped back onto the ground, the rear was still too high, so apart it came again, an extra coil removed and the coil was the secured into the top mount. Refitted and perfect The other side tool much less time (as we knew what we were doing by then ) and only had to do the rear shock once. Back on all 4's, more than happy with the end results Quick road test, all good bar the tracking which is out (not surprising), so time to clean up, pack up and head home. A very uneventful drive home, it rides really nice on the new suspension, and nothing seems to catch or rub, and it even goes onto my drive without any drama. But I did get a few pic's when I got home The wheels could do with about 20mm spacing either side on the rear, but I'm happy enough with them for the moment A big thanks again to Bruce

So do I, much more now that it doesn't have the comedy ride height Think I am going to have to have a good go through the wiring as it has had some interesting work done by past owners

That was a fun day. I'm glad we did the more challenging side first...drilling out & re-tapping where the snapped bolts were, that slightly odd top-mount etc... 2nd side went much quicker thanks to not having to deal with snapped bolts, the top mount was more sensible plus we knew how much to chop off the rear coils and so on. And the track rod end seemed to come out/go back in a lot easier. It looks like it's settled nicely on the journey home. I reckon it's dropped a good 10mm since leaving the unit from what I can make out in the photos. That can only be a good thing! It certainly looked a lot better than the ride height that made my Delica look slammed Oh....and don't forget to blas those horrid chrome centre caps with the black. That's not a suggestion, it's an order! I really had a good day. After the difficult fortnight I've just had it was brilliant to be back onto some car stuff again. Happy days! [edit] Later on tonight I'll get the three photos I took off my phone and post them up [/edit]
