so I have put a lot of time/effort/money into getting this to sit outside my house with the v5 in my name. now I was planning to just drive it properly and use it as my daily but I don't think I have the heart to do it. looking out the window at her sitting in a busy street in glasgow i'm freaking out about the state she'll end up in if I use it up to/during the winter. the paint/wheels etc are beautiful and the engine bay is mint (corrado 1.8 16v KR engine with twin dell'orto 40s ;D) BUT I am bricking it about using it as my main car. how do you manage to balance car care/using them without it taking over your life/spoiling your enjoyment of the car?

Use it and get the enjoyment from it but keep it as clean as poss. It's amazing how quickly cars deteriorate when stood. (it looks great by the way)
Daily cars don't need to turn into sheds so just keep on top of things.
It might take over your life......

Drive it but keep it waxed and undersealed to fend off corrosion and buy a set of winter wheels so those shiney ones don't get trashed by the salt in the winter. Easy!

It's a car. It was made to be driven. It's a horrible feeling having a car you're too scared to drive incase it gets damaged etc. Keep it serviced and get it all weatherproofed for the winter. Keep the alloys clean and use a protector on them OR buy a set of Golf GTI steels for the winter. Keep it clean inside and out and wax it regularly. There's no reason why you can't use it and keep it mint. If it's on coilies, maybe raise it up a touch if the roads by you are potholed or have speed bumps everywhere. It'll end up in a worse state if you leave it. It's gorgeous by the way

Sell it and import another 2dr more suited to daily use. Looks like a very nice show car but without an easy garage, all it takes is one hailstorm, one careless bin truck, and you'll be gutted. If it's bought, not built, you've owned it, polished it and been seen in it for a summer, job done. If it's built not bought - hell, do it again, change a few bits, have some more fun.
But don't just park it up and leave it in storage.

thanks for the input folks. currently bought not built but give me time - ive only had it 24hrs!
steels with winter tyres and and inch of wax is probably the way forward - if the carbs struggle with cold starts and or it starts to get marked in the street then i can reconsider.
richardtk - i am with you 100% on the multitude of things that could leave me utterly gutted talso agree that storage is a waste. thing is that i have literally just bought it so don't have that satisfaction of "oh well, ive had my fun"

Have your fun first. Enjoy it for the bit of summer we've got, take it to some shows - sell it before the roads get salted.

Use it! Bits which break can be fixed. I cant see anything really that can't be taken from a current Jetta or Golf should the worse happen.

Its a lovely car. But id say just use it. Any car ive ever left stood has deteriorated more than a car ive been using.
Ive had 50 odd cars and this allways applies

Use it. If you are just gonna look at it sitting there, take some photos, look at them instead and sell the car.
I brought my Porsche 944 with the intention of just using as a fair weather car, but after I started using it, I just kept comming up with excusses to drive it. Keep up the matainence and it'll deteriorate a lot slower than just parking it up.
Lovely car by the way...just enjoy it, if it deteriates and you didn't, then you'll feel cheated.

the people have spoken! thanks all
everything that breaks gets fixed, everything that gets dirty gets cleaned. i suppose using it is a good way to get jobs done too - something that annoys you when you drive to work will get fixed quicker than something you meant to do before you put it away for the winter.
I'm off to look for some black 15" steelies

And the money aspect - you could contract hire a dull boring car and it'd cost you £6K+ over two years, and you'd just hand it back.
I don't know what this cost, but I'm guessing not significantly more than that.

While these things are made to be used, I'd not park anything I cared about on a busy road 24/7.
That car does look very clean to be living on the roadside, but if you can keep up with the maintenance then go for it. I'd be terrified of it being bumped.

I once ha a car that was nice to look at. I was always worried about parking it for dings etc etc. so I did he best option. Sold it and got a couple of nice cars and use them both. Ok I've since changed several times. Bu still have 2 nice cars I'm happy to drive daily an leave places. Ok. I'm not to keen on leaving the beetle some place. But I'm using it pretty much ever day at the mo and saving the oter for winter. Lol
S either use it or sell it.

Well for starters, stop calling it a coupé; its a two-door saloon. As for the question, use it or sell ity. Or mount it on your living room wall. ;D

Drive it, fix it, keep it clean. I don't think steelies would suit it as winter wheels. Plenty of cheap nice looking alloys out there. along as they're painted not polished they'll go through winter fine.

[pedant]Surely if you can't access the cabin through the boot, it's a coupé?[/pedant]
Also, it's a car, so drive it. Although in your situation, I'd be finding some off-road parking for it.

[pedant]Surely if you can't access the cabin through the boot, it's a coupé?[/pedant] That would make almost any car built before 1980 that wasn't an estate car a coupe. This is a coupe, and this is a coupe, This is a 2 door saloon, Note that coupes based on everyday cars usually have altered roof lines and sometimes a longer boot.

VW called it a 2-door saloon, so that's good enough for me. On the main point, a car that's laid up will need more work to recommission it due to flat-spotted tyres, dried out seals, servicing, etc.
