scooby would be nice seen this done on type 2,s and they fly I'm tempted at a ej20 Subaru engine, been done a load of times and works well. There was a double cab splitty pickup at rrg14 with Subaru conversion and Porsche gearbox. Need to look into the cost, whether buying a Donor car is best? Or buying everything in kit form from a firm that specialises in these conversions.

I thought the firewall had to be cut quite a lot for Subaru engines, which means loosing the rear seat? I'm unsure if that's just the six cylinder ones rather than 4 bangers.

Not sure, mite be for the 6 cylinders you have to cut the rear floor out? I know that if I do have to there is plenty of space and I'll still be able to keep the rear seats.

Lob any old 1600 in it, chuck a 4 into 1 exhaust on, get a weber 32/36 manifold and pop a weber 28/30DFTM off an old 1400 fiesta/escort on it with a proper k&n filter.
Make sure you keep the stock dizzy, 009's are a bag of wibblepoo. It'll go well with this set up, and be ace on fuel too.
I never see the point in people putting twin webers on a relatively small engine bug, you have to choke twin 36's down to 26 to get them to flow ok to run correctly.. waste of time!

Also, you wont have to cut the firewall for any Subaru - the gearbox will stay where it is, the 6 will just hang out the back. EJ22 is probably the best not much chopping option, but they're getting scarce now.
Take no notice of me though, my latest bug is going front engined!

In your shoes I would be tempted with a 1641 twin carb engine or a Scooby item. Both IMO will cost a similar amount. Whilst the Scooby engine will give you the most power per buck the 1641 conversion may be arguably easier to do .

An engine conversion will get you into some serious issues with your hillclimb aspirations. As soon as you do an engine swap you'll get bumped into a class called "Sports Libre" - which is generally under supported and contains mostly Radicals and sports racers. You would also need a few other safety bits and bobs in that class like a roll cage....
