Cheers matey glad you like it - I was worried there would be a backlash! Thanks for the recomendation - I clicked the link and instantly bought the toffee wheel! I must have been mentally searching for any way to not repeat the 2 hour nail wrecker on the wing ;D I'll be sure to update the thread as and when

I destriped my camper with a toffee wheel, it's amazing Kept getting a bit of a yellowy residue left, though, which took a bit of polishing out. Although the last bit I left "to come back to" and when I did it had gone -- don't know if sunlight did something magical.

Awesome - I can't wait to get it and crack on with it! Shame I hadn't heard of one before I took a good few chunks of paint off! Ah well - I'll sort it out, be nice if it magically disappears like yours ;D not the most enjoyable of jobs!

Just a tip with the toffee wheel, get some real toffee too because it's very tempting to nibble.

Yeah well, I've been using it daily since I bought it (apart from when the electrics went and during the current brake issues) it's going relatively well I suppose! For a 21 year old Lada! I've put over 10% of its overall mileage on in the last few months so given that I guess it's doing well ;D I got the toffee wheel as recommended, by 'eck what a difference! Such an easy job! Whizzed them right off, made me wish I'd known before I heated up and chipped off lots of bits of paint but never mind! This is it sans stripe - still with the whitewalls on one side and not the other though!: I've had to change the brake master cylinder and I think the servo needs replacing too so i'm on the lookout for a new one. I've also fitted new plugs, leads and dizzy cap and I've got points and condenser to go on when I get round to it. Starts well enough in the cold and the heaters great too so that's a bonus in this weather! However, I think the hula girl's used to warmer climes going by her ensemble:

Well - I'm currently barricaded in the house with the norovirus not very pleasant. Now that I'm up and there is nothing on the telly I figured I'd update the Lada thread a bit as there have been a few developments. I posted about a month ago that I fancied a swap (in the 'love for the ridiculed' thread) and had a few offers, one that I was most interested in was PandaSelecta's E28.. I didn't want to do a deal with the slight brake servo issue I was experiencing so I was aiming to get that sorted before commiting. Anyway.. long story short is that I decided to keep it! Gonna keep the description brief as I feel rough! The exhaust was blowing like a goodun so I enquired about Dez's old system and subsequently bought it - I needed to extend the middle section about 8" and add a bend so that it exited in the standard place. This is the original system: Starting to work out what was needed and decided to cut a section out of the scrap MX5 I have on the drive, took it to MeltedCheese's house to weld up. Fitted like a dream and replaces three hefty silencers with a straight through exhaust finishing off with the albeit rather large sports box 3" exit! I was unsure of the size of the tailpipe when I saw it in the flesh but when I got it on the car, I liked it ;D It's nowhere near as loud as I expected but had a proper 60's rally car rasp with an unnatural amount of crackling on the overrun ;D Exhaust - done.

Next thing was the horn (the mot is up in April and so I'm working through its faults gradually) I fitted a Mountney woodrim ages ago, but had no centre horn push... Excuse the mess inside - its been laid up for 2 weeks.... Now, the handling suddenly took a turn for the worse a couple of weeks ago. I crawled around underneath looking for a possible fault but to no avail. It was pulling to the left very badly and vibrating all over the shop. The tyres are the originals and slightly cracked and crazed but felt circular... Until the ice and snow! The tyres must have been holding on for as long as possible but couldn't take the big freeze! So I figured I needed new tyres - however I didn't want to buy new tyres for my skinny steels. I also have a small budget for the Lada so I was on the hunt for some 4x98 alloys to fit the bill. After a good bit of searching and turning down a few sets that were too modern for my liking I found 'Cheshire Alfas' on eBay and made some enquiries! He had a nice set of these: for a good price. Tasty looking things, so a collection day was organised and off we set after work. However... we got halfway there and got a phone call to say that he'd had his stock broken into and my wheels had been stolen! I was gutted! They had decent tyres on as well so it would've been ace. He mentioned that he may have some other wheels that could fit the bill, so instead of turning around we motored on! He had an ace collection of Alfas in one of his fields, all sorts of cool Italian metal slowly (quickly?) rotting away.. Including an orange '79 Alfetta GTV sat high up on a forklift. The wheels were very similar to the ones I'd hoped for, but I preferred them, as instead of the small circular holes around the rim, they had slots instead - more suited to the Lada's breeze block styling! Unfortunately the tyres were equally as cracked but a plan was hatched involving swapping the brand new 14" tyres on our crashed mx5 over to the new mx5, and the decent tyres over from the new one to the GTV alloys. This had the added benefit of dropping the profile down from the rather chunky 185/70s that looked far too bubbly, to a subtle but much more pleasing to the eye 185/60. New tasty wheel, with the OE balloon tyre:

So I whazzed one of the rear wheels off the Lada and removed the steel wheel locating pins. Tried one of the GTV rims on - PCD was fine and it sat snug on the hub but the bolts didn't even reach the thread! So I made some measurements and bought a brand new set of longer wheelbolts from the bay of E. Whilst I was waiting for their arrival I tried one on the front - the centrebore was bigger! Damn... strange. So I bought myself a flapper wheel (40grit, 60mm) and waited for that to arrive! When everything landed I put the rear wheels on with the longer bolts - success! Then I set the flapper wheel up, removed the centre caps (nice solid alloy with a flat circlip to hold them in, and a slight holographic shimmer - very tasty. It was then that I realised the alfa badge is a snake in a CROWN, eating a bloke - odd, but very cool). I took a few mill out of the centre bore: Here it is all in increased and shiny: So on it went! Only to not sit right.... And be completely locked to the hub. curse word! I loosened the bolts slightly to investigate and it transpires they were squashed up against the brake caliper. Dang! You can see were the internal spikes had been smacking the caliper :/ So I cracked open the old grinder and got busy! And this is the fitment now, plenty of meat left in the caliper, Tried it on and it fit like a glove, 3 down - 1 to go! Next day I sorted the last wheel and stood back and admired with a cuppa! They needed a fair bit of work but I'm very pleased with the results, and to answer the question of 'has it fixed the handling?' It only bloomin' has! Drives like a Daimler Here she blows: ;D

I've also bagged myself a bargain in the form of a 100% rebuilt carb that has a mechanical second choke due (mine has a vacuum one - not the best) but its not without its problems. Now the carb that's fitted is ok, but I had to remove the accelerator pump due to not being able to source a diaphragm for it. This means that if you try and pull away quickly it coughs and splutters so the initial press of the accelerator has to be quite gentle and it's fine, although somewhat annoying sometimes! That, and the vacuum secondary choke made me snap up this new carb - however of transpires its from a 1500 Samara.. Jets will be right but as its from a FWD car, the accelerator bracket is on the opposite side, it doesn't have the same micro switch affair that clicks when the throttle is shut either. It does have an inlet and outlet for water to keep it warm, a fuel cut off solenoid (that's missing but easily availible from Lada Parts) and a wire that needs to be fed to ignition live (I think). It also has a diaphragm the same size as the one that's missing on my original carb.... I've just got to work out wether it's worth modifying everything to fit this tasty carb or relinquish it of its lovely new parts to repair my old carb... Decisions, decisions!

Cheers gents Here's one of the centre caps I was on about: Intriguing! Seems there is a lot of conflicting information on its origins dotted around the net. It seems the snake is the 'Biscione' but its meaning seems to be slightly confused. Whatever it means its pretty cool
