There really are some pathetic people in this world. In a world where a lot of people have a grudge against retro/modifyed cars, I thought this was a place that people could share there passion. Seems no where is safe.
I fear posting up a pic of my car in case someone rings my insurance company/vosa/armed response or god.
Pat on the back.

But why not cross the t's and dot the i's when it comes to the legalities? They don't speak as for the safety of the vehicle (and I'm not giving an opinion on that one way or another), but they do speak for its provenance. Why give the authorities any excuse to pull you over/take your car off the road/cancel your insurance?

I don't agree with witch-hunting any owners of said vehicles and reporting them to the authorities, however I do think there is a duty of care when such vehicles come up for sale to ensure any interested parties go into a deal with eyes wide open.
This forum is a community after all, a knowledge base for sharing and helping each other, and some people are not as versed as others when it comes down to the various rules and regulations of car modifying.

I'd actually be curious to know how/when it was built and all, by private message if you prefer And as for legalities, I'm French so we have it a lot worse here (so I wouldn't want to ruin anyone's fun) and I wouldn't possibly have any interest in getting this car off the road!

The floorpan has been chopped though, 5 mins with a tape measure and it'll be needing a BIVA.

He was under the impression that keeping it registered as a Landy was the correct thing to do. Some well intentioned advice would probably have been more constructive than a public hanging (not aimed at you btw). He mentioned that in hindsight he should probably have used the Beetle book but as a result of this episode he's a bit upset and he's talking about scrapping the car and calling it a day with car modifying. This game's supposed to be about having fun isn't it? Shame, but there it is. Lee.

So that would mean all beach buggy owners with logbooks that still say 'VW Beetle' and running around with original registration plates should be whistling nervously then? Yep! I'm sure they must be BIVA able though as flatlands still seem to be able to pump out turnkey cars, and there's plenty of 356 speedster reps still coming out.. A guy at work built a Cobra rep recently, got it IVA'd, and now it's on the road. I've got no problem with people making cool vehicles, and as Dez said, fair play if you build it and run it how you want - its your car, you run the risk! When it comes to selling it though the buyer should at least be made aware there could be future issues. Mind you, I doubt you'd be buying that thinking it's a stocker, and at least without a quick internet search about it. I do think its a bit petty dobbing in every man and his dog just because someone did it to you, but hey ho, each to their own...

Lee ^^
Tell him not to be disheartened - you see a fair few old landies on a q plate, so the main body of them must get through the test...
I'd be getting it sorted as a big F U to those that hate if it were me!

What's the point if fellow enthusiasts grass you up to the man? Every time you're at a car show people post photos on the net. How many internet heros must there be taking reg numbers and comparing them to DVLA data? This kind of thing just adds more nails to the coffin of having the freedom to use old/modified cars.

There's not a lot you can do about that sadly My mate had a traffic car waiting for him when he got home the other week as someone had rung the cops with his reg number saying he was driving over 100mph. He wasn't, and the cops were pretty cool with him, but it still curse word him right off that someone had done it! You get people like that in all walks of life unfortunately!

Registration rule is that to retain the "unmodified chassis" on a Beetle the spine must be stock length and retain the original floor pans.
And yes a lot of buggy owners would be needing IVA.

Guy in question had a BMW V8-powered Escort; I doubt that a little. Read his posts, I think his motivation lies elsewhere.

Guy in question had a BMW V8-powered Escort; I doubt that a little. Read his posts, I think his motivation lies elsewhere. yes. to summise, hes got a e36 bmw that was cut in half and shortened, a bmw v8 fitted, then a mk1 escort shell draped over the top. he then got the on when he was told he cant run it on the mk1 logbook cos its really not a mk1 anymore, said he was gunna do it anyway but hide what the finished car looks like, and rubbed a few people up the wrong way (mostly on OSF i think) who grassed him up/threatened to grass him up to doovla for it. he has supposedly started grassing up people also doing illegal mods as 'revenge'. i think thats about the long and short of it anyway. as you say lee, a simple polite explanation of the whys and wherefores would go a lot further and p1ss a lot less people off. i hope your mate keeps at it and gets it legally regd, as i for one quite like the car, and plan on doing simialr myself, albeit with a scimmy chassis.

as I for one quite like the car, and plan on doing simialr myself, albeit with a scimmy chassis. There's a guy in Swindon doing that (Hot Rod on a Scimitar chassis) to get round regs as he's using the complete chassis. Without taking this further off topic, what about kit cars that have been registered with a Q plate and then further modified afterwards? Mark
