Ok, so there I was one day, bored at work, when I decided it would be a good idea to find and buy a car to do something silly with.
At the time there were dreams of SR20DET engines, massive skids in something totally not fit for purpose. Long story short, this led me to buying the 1967 1725cc Hillman Hunter that you see before you.
Before my name was on the log book, it has one previous owner. An elderly gentleman who loved, and cared for this car all of his life. Looking at the dodgy filler in the rear arches, maybe he loved it a bit too much. Anyway, said elderly gentleman went deaf and had to give up driving when he over-revved the engine thus causing the bottom end to knock somewhat. This is the only reason the MOT lapsed and it came off of the road. The tax ran out a year ago. It is showing very low mileage, but off of the top of my head I can't remember - I will check, but I think it's 50k. It starts, runs and actually drives quite nicely, albeit with a terrible death rattle from the engine.
Ordinarily, I wouldn't have considered such a beast, but underneath it's never seen a welder. Sure the rear arches have poo in them, the n/s/f wing has a dent in it etc etc, but it's solid as a rock. Someone has put strut top plates under the bonnet, but when I had the struts out to lower it the other day, there was no gaping holes, or any sign of rot, so I'm not sure why they have done this.
Truth be known, in the cold light of day I don't have the time or enthusiasm to do this car. I got all excited and progressed from SR20 to Cosworth YB, but still, the reality is, I have too much else going on... And I've seen another car that I actually want, and have wanted for some time, so this one has got to go.
I have bought a replacement engine for it, which will be included in the sale. It's another 1725cc unit, but has twin carbs for added, er, carbiness.
Saturday just gone, for a laugh, I stuck some Escort lowering springs up the front and some 2" blocks at the rear, and put some of my wheels on it (Ford fitment makes wheel choice much easier). The wheels won't be included in the sale, but it gives you an idea of the fact that this car has potential to look quite cool.
It would take very little work to get it through an MOT and obviously being of 1967 origin, it's tax exempt - always a win.
I still have the original springs etc, which will come with the car. It also has, wait for it... genuine beaded seat covers.
All told, with the original purchase price, the cost of transport to get it to me, and the replacement engine, it owes me just over a grand, so I'm looking for £1000 or as close to it as possible.
If you have any questions or are interested, drop me a PM.
Cheers for looking.
