After getting loads of advice I tackled the engine bay. Tidied up some of the wiring and gave it good covering with autoglym degreaser and cleaned it all and dressed with plastic and vinyl spray. Stuck some of the trim back on the car. And finally got round to rebadging the boot. I tried hunting around for the correct jack for this car for ages as mine was in pretty poor state. They sit right by a water channel under the bonnet so they get soaked and subsequently rust like mad. I have never done much spraying but after looking for so long for the right jack I gave up and had a crack myself. The jack prior to degrease clean and wire brushing. I went at the jack like a madman with the wirebrush to get rid of the rust soon as a found I had completed a patch another came back but I was quite pleased with the results. And the end result.

Figured out why the rear end hasn't rotted out today. Took the rear quarter panels off internally to find copious amounts of wax oil. So I stuffed a load more in there :-)

A small update on progress. Pulled the rear turret covers to discover immaculate paint. I carried on with the rust proofing confused as to why after all these years the rear quarters hadn’t rotted out as they rot out for fun. I discovered the previous owner had sprayed a little waxoil down inside the rear panels. I then took a similar attitude that I have taken to the rest of the car with regards to rustproofing and liberally coated the interior door panels. The wipers were beginning to look tired so took them off and replaced them. Whilst removing them I found the plastic covers under them were cracked and messed up. After much hunting I sourced replacments and fitted them.

That looks really smart. Good job on all the cleaning so far!
You should probably have a look at those foglights in the bumper as well. The inside offside (haha) one looks a little corroded. By the way, is it possible to light up all four of them simultaneously? Please include pictures if it's possible.

I know I've been eyeing that fog light up. I like your thinking I will have to try the full on light show effect !!

That is a very nice looking car and you are doing a fantastic job of bringing it back to prestige condition.
One question and please do not take this as a critisism, just incradulity. Some where on page 2 you made reference to the price you paid for the car. Is that really what an XR 2 is worth? I must be really out of touch... (Insert smiley face etc)
That aside nice too see a car being used and enjoyed, look forward to your next update.

Theres several reasons. A) The man selling it on eBay put on a very basic add with not much in the way of details. I found out more about the car doing my own digging than the advert. B) ending the auction on a weekday mid afternoon is never a good idea. C) mk3 rust for fun and he didn't mention that it had no rust and the photos were poor quality. D) the mk3 is not as popular as the mk1 & 2 and are only just gathering a following. E) also it had only done 100 miles between servicing which may have put people off. F) I think the low mileage may have set alarm bells ringing as he didn't have any reason for it on the listing so I think a lot of people thought it had been round the click or had been clocked. They are worth more than I paid but I feel I got a bargain :-) it wasn't all rosy to start with I ended up spending £800 on the engine and brakes to get it running properly oh and replace the tyres. It came with the original tyres which helped confirm the mileage these however were square from the car sitting for so long between mots. Once that was all sorted I have just been cleaning and repairing any broken bits of trim etc. not much of a project by the standards of many on here but it's one I can manage between family and shift work. Oh and also my ineptitude with a spanner. Thank you for your kind words. I was offered £3000 for her as part ex on a 2.8 Capri but she suits my lack of spanner skills :-) I think the values are rising as more succumb to tin worm but not quite that high at the moment.
