You can tax the car with the new owner slip, so don't worry about that. As long as you have the new owner slip, mot cert & insurance cert your fine. Main thing to check is how close the nearest post office is.

I was in your situation recently and bought a 16 year old Alfa 155 for £600. ;D I'm getting about 30 to the gallon but as said before petrol is cheaper than diesel so the diesel i replaced isn't missed that much (at least fuel-cost-wise). It's been perfectly reliable so far and great fun to drive. I would say that the individual car and how it's been looked after means much more than the badge on it. I've seen VWs, SEATs and Skodas that break down all the time (I've had quite a few) and Alfas, Fiats, Rovers etc. that are far more reliable just because they've been looked after and are a good example. Anyway, I'm not suggesting you buy a 16 year old petrol Alfa, that would just be stupid ;D but I am suggesting that you don't get tunnel vision and that you consider paying a LOT less money. Don't dismiss a car because of the badge. For example a Fiat/Alfa JTD could be great for you - especially once you sit in a well looked after leather 156 ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Good luck!

Food for thought I just averaged roughly 35mpg out of my E36 323i (2.5l petrol auto) on a 400 mile round trip. Assuming 45mpg out of a diesel, which I could maybe scrape in mine, on the same run and using the price of fuel at our bit, the fuel cost would've been about £11 less. If you were in a petrol motor that could get 45mpg, the trip would've been just over £15 cheaper.

i paid a grand for my 53 plate stilo estate jtd, comes with all mod cons, climate control, 17" wheels, full heated leather, cheap to run does 60mpg all day long, its comfy, it looks nice and goes pretty spritly to be fair, is only £135 a year to tax and £202 full comp protected :-), yes it has electrical gremlins (most fiats do) but runs perfect starts first turn.... and there cheap as chips to buy

The most expensive car I have owned is the only new car I have owned! Fed up with repairs and niggles on my old polo 1.9d ( which were minor issues considering its mileage) I bought a Citroen pluriel- special order, the first rhd, diesel AND air con, with extended full cover, service schedule, breakdown cover- although only mechanical, and not mental. This car did go wrong, parts such as brakes and tires as it was new and lack of dealer knowledge. Considering depreciation, that car cost 10k over 4 years. As cars age, parts drop in price. I would go for something older, cared for and save the money so you have some left as a reserve for another. Chances are you may not need to, but as pointed out before, you could blow your 5k on a disaster that goes wrong and have no money to fix it!

If I had £5k to spend on a daily driver I'd buy my '96 Passat TDi wagon for £600 again (92k miles) and run it on veggie oil at 90p/litre and get 45-50mpg with mixed driving as I am now. The other £4,400 would be divided into £4k towards my garage and £400 towards me.

Oh, and by the way, my '96 Passat is a modern car in my eyes!

Hi Guys
I'm hopefully going to see a Golf 1.4 tomorrow (V Reg). Only 65ishk on it. £760. No tax but MOT till Sept.
It looks as good as the Volvo but smaller engine (so better mpg? and cheaper ins?) mostly I'm just going for it out of favoritism for VWs. I appreciate they're not the only good cars out there but I like them.
If it falls through I'll try and see the Volvo I think.
Shame as I found a lovely Diesel Polo today. Called the seller only to be told "Nah mate, not for sale, my GF's changed her mind".
I'll let you know how it goes.

Don't forget diesels take an age to warm up Not all of them. My '96 Passat TDi warms up very quickly whereas my company '07 Vectra TDi takes ages.

Hello all
I've bought a Golf. Can't show you pics as its been taken down now by the seller from Gumtree.
99 (W) Golf 1.4 (Gold!) 67k.
Drove it home (sorted ins out first) and no problems. Seems to work as well as my Mums Polo does/did so no complaints.
Paid £720, down from £760 due to cracked windscreen not mentioned.
I'll get some pics in daylight at the weekend and let you guys see them.
Thanks again for all your advice. I'll be back to the car parts of this board to ask more questions as they come up (hey it is 14 years old so potentially Retro!), you've all been very helpful.
