Unfortunately all these posts will probably be deleted, however I have to agree, this is stupid money. Concourse Mk1's go for less. How about having a section where dealers can advertise their cars, but make them pay to do so? That way the forum wins as well as the dealer!

I never understand why people offer opinions on a "for sale" thread - Buy it if you want to, don't buy it if you don't want to. But giving opinions of valuation is slightly uncalled for on the sales thread. Why not just start a thread in general discussions or something.
I doubt you would appreciate it if you were selling an item and someone came on and said it was worth pennies and you had it advertised at £200. Personally I think it's just good manners. If someone has the money and wishes to pay the asking price, good for them.

I always wonder how much they pay for them off the original owner in the first place.. Considerably less than he is selling it for. Thats the whole point, he is a DEALER!!! Its not a dirty word and its not a crime. God knows, id love to be able to trade in cars to make a living and not break my back doing what I do now. Somebody will pay that price or he will reduce it and sell it and still make a tidy profit and good luck to him! People whinge far too much, nobody has to buy it and going by the amount of utter cack that is regularly hawked on here and all over the WWW that car looks good value. Three grand too dear? So what? Amazingly enough IF he gets close to his asking price VW Golf Owners will be wetting their pants at the notion that their £3,000 cars are suddenly worth a lot more. Win win. Some people really do hate others trying to make a living!

I must admit i do pay over the odds normaly but i try and get the best car for my money. I then spend more time enjoying the car and less time fixing it and then get a good price when i move on. I like to keep a good running car as well as a prodject so i get both fixes that i need If i was looking for a golf this would atract me but i would always try and chip a little off. Each to their own.

What a shame people still feel the need to post things that need deleting. I'm quite happy to have someone advertising quality cars on here. No-one had to buy the cars. Guess what, dealers make money. I believe that selling quality cars for good money is actually rather good for our hobby.

Guess what, dealers make money. I believe that selling quality cars for good money is actually rather good for our hobby. depend what you mean by "good money" ? ovepricing isnt good for our hobby and cars reaching stratospheric prices isnt good for it either. you only need to look at the E30 M3 to see how this is true. wasnt so long ago a car needing lots of attention was only a few £k with tidy cars around the £5 - 10k mark now though the prices have been pushed up so much, that our hobby suffers and the only winners are the lucky few who owned a tidy M3 and sold up and make big ££££. the bottom line is that nowadays the M3 isnt available to the majority of people - and that makes me now this car is another matter. it looks very tidy, and the mileage is good too. is it overpriced ? hmmm not for me to say, I don't know enough about the VW market - but that said I wouldnt be too surprised to hear a child of the 80's done good had decided to relive their childhood and had bought it to add to a small collection of cars. (my only "issue" is that for that sort of money id have expected everything to be sorted - eg no dink in the rear wing) btw I'm firmly in the camp of enjoying reading some of the banter on for sale threads - as long as its productive or at the very least doesnt unfairly affect the sale of the car in question

The irony's not lost on me that a lot of the people moaning about the relatively high cost of some 80's motors will happily go out and spend £500+ on a set of 'fashionable' alloys in the name of exclusivity and one-upmanship...
It's just a car. Let the guy alone to make a living.

Theres nothing "relatively" high about it. And as "Bounty Hunter pointed out, these dealers have little or no real interest in the cars they sell, or what damage it does to our hobby. I know they have to make a living, i'm not totally ignorant. However they should be realistic, and more aware of what damage they're doing. Next thing we'll have a whole batch of decent mk2's going for 5 and 6k insted of the 2.5-3.5k that they're really worth. Want a market where genuine modern classics are out of reach of the genuine enthusiasts??? Well these dealers are the start of it. Anyway, i've had my little say, sorry i feel so strongly about this i had to say something.

Honestly don't get seanr68's point at all.
Someone is selling a car. He runs a business, yes, he'll have to make a profit. It's called making a living.
Too much money for you to afford? That's not the sellers problem. A genuine enthusiast will end up buying it. After all, they will have paid 6k to buy it!

i think everyone is missing the point on the pricing of this car, its all about the provenance! it would the same story we saw on pissedonheads the other day, freddie mercurys RR shadow up for sale. no doubt that will go for more than the value of a "normal" shadow.

Freddie Mercury never owned this? That doesn't even make any sense.
Too much for me to afford? No. The fact is someone will buy it. Then when they do, other mk2 sellers will see this and say "hey, if he can get 6k for his, i'll try it with mine". Before you know it, the markets full of mk2's worth in reality 2-3k, going for 6k. Then those that CANT afford it are forever out of the market for a decent mk2. And don't automatically assume because someone pays 6k for a car, they'll look after it...not always the case. And if you don't get the point, then you really need to ask if you understand classics at all. Its like over inflated house prices, it damages the market, it isn't rocket science really.

And if you don't get the point, then you really need to ask if you understand classics at all. Its like over inflated house prices, it damages the market, it isn't rocket science really. Over inflated houses prices have never damaged the market because their prices always reflected demand. At least base your argument on a coherant example! What is there to understand about classics? Some command a premium and some don't. You can buy 3 reasonable 6A Scimitars for the price of a decent and inferior 2.8 Injection Capri. Why? There are more potential buyers for a 2.8 Crapri than there are good ones on the open market. Higher demand pushes up prices,it works just the same elsewhere because its how capitalism works and if you don't get that, more fool you. The World isnt fair, its not equal and some of us will be the "haves" and some of us will be the "have nots" Personally, Id love something like a good MK3 Zodiac but they are way out of my price range. Who should I blame for that? Its life, I accept that somethings will not be within my reach but I wont get all bitter and twisted about it. "Classics" is a very loose term and the MK2, in my eyes is NOT a classic so people shouldnt be getting all precious about Golf prices. The arguments against the dealer are frankly weak and a bit pathetic. If there are plenty of decent MK2s out there much cheaper then buy the bloody cars, under cut him and stop moaning FFS!!

Unfortunately all these posts will probably be deleted, however I have to agree, this is stupid money. Concourse Mk1's go for less. A MK1 in this condition/mileage/history would be more money, not less. The seller isn't forcing anyone to buy at this price, if it's too dear then don't buy. The reason I've pretty much moved away for aircooled VW's is that I don't 'consider' an average camper to be worth 5k+. People pay so fair play to them, I'm not getting on my orange box and moaning about the cost in today's market.
