www.flickr.com/photos/kenjonbro/3245975574 My first stainless job, not my photo though. Not exactly the same. Stainless is easier if its thicker , shines up better the cooler you keep it. I find it finishes better with active gases such as Inamax. Aluminum gets more difficult the thicker it is as you struggle to start a pool, often a preheat may be needed, and once it gets hot you end up chasing the pool getting quicker all the time. A foot pedal will eliminate that problem. I've never done titanium but once spoke with a bloke who had and he said you have to weld it in a pure argon environment, basically a tent with no air in it at all. The term is walking the dog but there is so much more to it than just running the torch around the joint. If you don't add filler you end up with undercut in the welds, Looking at the pictures notice how neatly the filler is added. Tbf most the welds here are pretty damn good.

Bondyfnm , i agree all of the welding is great apart from the pigeon poo , but i suppose you have to start somewhere!!. Not sure if on your car is best though !!! As for adding wire I'm aware of that , you just have to get into a rythm of adding it to keep it neat .

Wow, just wow. I have a project in my head (Well, it's in my loft actually ) and I will start it next week so that I can tidy up my welding a bit. Oh, and get a bigger gas bottle! Then, practice, practice and practice some more!! Chances are my welds will never ever ever be that good though. I am in awe.

Practice practice practice is exactely the way to go . Any welder will tell you thats the only way to get good . By a load of scrap or steel and just hammer away - even consider buying a whole sheet of steel from a stockists and get them to chop it into 200mm x 150mm strips and weld it all back together .

I could never dream of being that good, but as you say with practice it is possible to create neat strong welds. It doesn't help that I have a gasless mig. I started learning using the boot floor of my old escort estate (of mk6 vintage) it was heavily rotten and I had no intention of it being on the road very long but when it was scraped it was full of randomly positioned terrible seams with random bits of metal poking out everywhere. It's all practice my welding isn't the best but its strong and visually isn't bird waste

some of that is just stunning, the rest is art. I do quite a bit of mig and tig and have been welding for 20+ years but i'm not to that standard, wish i was. There is a big difference between a strong weld and a strong pretty weld, both do the same job but well the proof is in the above pictures.

some of these are incredible - never forget how good some of the guys at dad's old place were. Went to Paris last month; my girlfriend laughed and called me a nerd for commenting on how nicely welded the handrails on the metro trains were - i'm glad i'm with friends here

This thread is really making me want a TIG set! I'm not sure where in the welding porn category this fits in. Definitely not the sort you would like to be caught fapping to when someone walks in.... I done this > Grinders are only to be used BEFORE welding. Worth having a "set" though :-)
