I thought you were having problems with insurance premiums? Buying a hot hatch to get a cheap premium isn't quite the way round I thought it worked... I was – with a tank. Big cars are prohibitively expensive to insure. E class Merc, SII Land Rover with a decent engine etc. Small cars I can get insured on at reasonable cost (inc. the quicker hot hatches). I’ve been trying to say this several times in the thread! My first post must have confused people. Basically: Barges = Too expensive to insure Nippy hot hatches = I can insure in the summer. I’d like suggestions on the latter – not some veteran car with 15HP – OK a little over exaggeration. what insurance company are u with?? ive always found that an old "barge" with a big engine has always been cheeper that all hat hatches in my own experience.. as anything with a badge "gti" etc and anything that is commen for tuning and for the younger crowd (fic I ammm sounding old now!!) and nickable has always been cheeper that a "grandad hack... a nova sr was £2300 compared with a volvo 740 turbo with 186hp at £820 that was a quote a few years ago when I was about 19 but I opted for a rover sd1 v8 with modifications for 900 quid instead...!! obviously that was then etc.... but...... just ideas... si

Hmm I add a vote for the Citroen ZX they're suprisingly cheap on Insurance
Also a civic VTI I found them cheaper to insure than a 205 GTI
And what about a swift GTI. Fantastic little 1300 engines really revvy very quick.

If you can find a non-rusty one, an Alfasud is a real hoot. You don't need a 1.7 litre engine, the 1.5 is fine. Most rusted away 20 years ago, so any that are left now should be ok. Out of the box ideas? Citroen Visa GTi (maybe ebay.fr ?) Peugeot 309 GTi can be good value and handle well. Peugeot 106 Rallye is ace, but finding one that hasn't had the life thrashed out of it may be difficult Peugeot 104ZS could be a hoot I've got a lust for the Fiat 127 Sport It's almost a hatchback (as much as a Hillman Imp anyway) but I had loads of fun with a Suzuki Whizzkid. A very fine way to thrash around B roads Quite an imaginative bunch of suggestions there: Visa GTi - brilliant but very very fragile. Insurance is quite light though! Fiat 127 Sport - grin all day long 104ZS - yes a right hoot. Good luck tracking down either of the remain two left on the road in the UK, (hint ones mine and one's a friend of mine, neither are for sale). 106 rallye - insurance 309 GTi - budget price fun with easy insurance At your age you'll struggle with insurance on either a 5 GTT or 205 GTi, but remebers poweer isn't the end of it. A well sorted car that handle well will always be a hoot to drive.

I'd go with the Fiat 127 or an Alfa Sud.

309 GTi would be cool, good point! Although if you want fun and don't care what the great unwashed think of your ride the Visa GTi would be hard to beat.
I know a couple who have spent the last year travelling 'round western Europe in another quality ol' hatch, a proper french twin-carb'd Talbot Samba Rallye. Honestly the most fun car I've ever travelled in, especially strapped in the passenger seat at 60 mph on a twisty single track road with the driver shouting to me in French and his wife, sat in the back screaming in Polish!
Hard to find nowadays though.... Why have I never owned a french car?

I have always found it the other way arround. Keep plugging away with the quotes until something makes you happy. Its not easy at your age (I can just about remember!) I had a 2.0 Capri at 19 and everyone said I'd never get it insured, but I did.

Keeping forgeting about ZX's, quality cars they are too. Almost brought a 16v one instead of the Volvo (kinda wish I had now!). Even the 8v and Turbo Diesel one are pretty quick!
