For mid engined use if possible! I'm aware of Renult 21s (the turbo box in perticular) but what others are there? the more compact the better! Ive also heard of flipping diffs in rear engined ones but not relly sure what that involves! Any info/leads appreciated

If you are wanting to run mid mounted then any front drive set up can be used. Unless you are wanting to put the engine inline, and if that was the case it would probably end up rear mounted.

The 3-series manual Volvo's had transaxles because they were designed by DAF before Volvo bought them in 1975. The 340 was originally only ever going to be Variomatic, AFAIK the manual version came much, much later, and the floorpan was left as it was so Volvo had no choice but to put the transmission at the back.

I'm starting to get a picture of whats going on here slater J Good I'm not sure what the differance would be (if any) between somethign that lives at the front bolted on to the engine and somethign that lives at the back joined by a torque tube or whatever! (as i assume a 3series volvo, porche 924 etc. is)

Attulay alfa 33, capible of 200+bhp, short, easily mid mounted with original box!
That could work!

starting to favor the alfa option now attualy soo you might be in luck! 1.7 16valvers appear to make about 130bhp as stock and early 145/146s containing said engines are cheap as chips! They come with the right gearbox attached aswell i think. Just attach blower for stupidness! are they any good thats the question!

citroen..... ds, sm, visa, 2cv, cx, ....... lotus esprit used the ds gearbox with the diff in upside down and was pretty strong.... and the sm had a maserati v6 on the end....!
also the humble beatle 1200 gearbox (i think the 1200 was one of the strong ones? some one better aquanted with air colled v-dubs would know better) are pretty strong... a friend put one on a merc 4.5 v8 with no probs.... si
