Been after a set of these for ages - hardest part was finding out what the design was called - gave up trying to describe the font. Apparently called serco - after the gatso people .... a1showplates.com/ for £24 a pair. Bargain, and unlike some other suppliers a perfect font match. Anyone know why these plates appeared in the first place? Very oddball.

Yep, had a set made last year. It's not an exact copy of the Serck font, but close enough to warrant a place on my Escort. You forgot to mention that the font people need to choose is 'Eurostyle'. It's even more authentic if you select the border option. Nearly all the plates I can remember from this era had a border.

Closest I could find a couple of years ago was the Hi-Line font from DMB graphics. Not quite the same, but they did have the option of custom borders and being able to make me a reduced size front plate too.

Serck Marston, which is now part of Unipart after they took over the Serck Group - they are still a major supplier of number plates, but they only supply the BS Au 145d 'Charles Wright 2001' font these days. The 'Serck'' font was their own design dating from the early 80s, as only the size of the characters and not the font style was mandated in the BS Au 145a standard that applied then. Serck originally started supplying radiators and coolers to the motor industry, and Serck Heat Exchange still do. Their Motorsport division is still a leading supplier of radiators, intercoolers and oil coolers to F1, race and rally teams as well.

Aha, a handy one to keep in mind . Another person I can add to the list (for the older rivetted number plates) are the Number Plate Centre in Sparkbrook, Birmingham. Their prices were quite competitive for them .

Talking of riveted plates, I got a set for my Capri from Framptons:

Those Framptons raised letter plates are over £60 per pair iirc mate. I'm disappointed by this thead! I bought a set of Euro font 'Serck' plates from A1showplates a couple of years back - then they randomly ended up on a cgi rendered AW11. Google search shows how hard they are to come by - lol. As said, it's close but it's not right! /Roy Walker. Someone on eBay claimed to be able to offer actual Serck font plates (acrylic not pressed) but their listing soon disappeared. My mate also reckons he has the font on his hard drive. I still await my copy. ;D img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/PICT1528.jpg [/img] As MM says, borders are a must.

Talking of riveted plates, I got a set for my Capri from Framptons: I have a set of those, mine have the aluminium border though. Have a nice blurry phone picture ;D Mine were £50 which I thought was A LOT but I guess that was 3 years ago now. Framptons do offer a great service though.

That's Eurostyle (bold). It's not like the Serck typeface, similar, but no cigar.

Sorry for the confusion, I didn't mean the actual typeface 'Eurostyle' but the name they've given the 'Serck style' font on the A1 Showplates website. 60six, in his original post says that A1 will make plates similar to the Serck font, but he doesn't say which actual font to select from the options. I was just trying to help people by saying they need to select 'Eurostyle' If someone does ever uncover the Serck font as an actual TT font, I would certainly be interested in it..... ;D

Talking of riveted plates, I got a set for my Capri from Framptons: When I purchased my mk1 fiesta the reg no. had just been changed. When I asked why, the bloke pointed me to his other concourse mk1 fiesta, which had the original reg of my car and the original riveted ally plates fitted to it. The bloke has bought the fiesta I later purchased, purely to transfer the reg no off so he could use the riveted plates on his car. That £60 would have been cheaper/easier I reckon!

Try £45 delivered via the No. Plate Centre : Here's a shot of them on the Stag : Framptons are a great bunch of people to deal with though . After postage they wanted £70 for mine.

I do like a number plate related topic... Framptons did these pressed plates for my Mini. Great quality and great to deal with.

If only the previous owner of my Spitfire did them in that font. He went for pressed plates but with a modern font. They looked more like French/Euro plates! They did seem to suit the car mind you: Another thing I have noticed [anorak] is that the font varies from supplier to supplier. Whilst my Dolomite had the squarer letters, the Stag came with more rounded letters... Which plates are correct for the 70s and 80s? God knows[/anorak]: Here is a question I have for you chaps though (a complete derailment of the original topic!). Assuming that Old Charles Wright was also a correct font for the early 90s where could I get some plates with the dealer insignia on the bottom? I am after a set on my 944 (the rear has gone a bit wierd/got water in it) .

I've always thought the "right" numberplates can make such a difference to a car's look, nearly on a par with ride height and wheels in some cases.
Need to get a set of rivetted ones for the Marina at some point. Probably after it has some essentials like an engine that works, but definitely on the to do list. I did swap the black and silvers for pressed white and yellow ones at the insistence of Mr Plod and I was surprised to find I much prefer them!
