They're curse word, all the storage issues of a normal caravan with none of the benifits i.e. being able to get to a campsite, leave the caravan and go out in the car.

I used to have a Romahome camper on a tiny 550cc Honda Acty pick-up so like the idea of demountables. Not as easy as you'd think to remove though. The body is still heavy and mine was more than a bit "wobbly" when demounted supported on the jacks. Never dared get inside when demounted. No way would I ever consider demounting on a camp site as realigning on remounting can be difficult.

I've been thinking along similar lines, so the base vehicle can also be used as a daily (rather than demounting on-site). I'm interested to see what this thread turns up.
Unfortunately I've not seen anything that's convinced me they're practical enough, but I hope I can be proved wrong.
As with any other leisure 'vehicle' they're serious money, so DIY sounds very interesting.

Before I bought my Romahome I got two fibreglass truckman tops off full sized (8' bed) pick-ups (£5 each off eBay !). The intention was to turn one upside down and then attach the other to the top thus creating the bulk of a camper shell.

This is my Chevy C20 with a demountable body,it takes about 5 minutes to demount it with 1 jack either side & i've made up some heavy duty tressles to rest it on when it's off the truck!

i think it has alot of benifits! you don't have to pay more on tolls or ferrys, its demountable so your car can be used as a daily, its smaller and easier to store than a whole caravan, you don't need a towing licence etc, my cars a 4x4 so id actually be able to use it offroad too (try doing that with a caravan!)
I cant imagine removal or storage being too much of a problem! i could always lower it to the floor and add some feet/spreaders so should be extremely sturdy off the vehicle, it could be removable on a camp site if need be

I had a mindfart a few years ago that it might be possible to build a detachable camper thing that would slot onto a Citroen CX.
So the idea would be that the detatchable bit would also have wheels and you could reverse the CX onto it with the suspension at full stretch then lower it down onto the coupling which would then take the weight and the rear CX wheels would lift off the road.
Probably not practical due the turning circle being potentially massive, but straight line stability would be great and the detachable part could be as big as you like as it wouldn't be classed as a trailer.
Well, that's what the voices in my head told me!!

^^^ Reminds me of this kinda!! Not a million miles away at all, but my plan was to lift the rear wheels of the car off the ground so there wasn't any contention around articulation and the detachable bit would be much longer. I doubt the CX's chassis would cope with the extra stress involved to be honest, mainly as it'd be pulling it all in the wrong directions, but the basic principle would address the instability issues of towing and the practical issues of a motorhome and everyone would be able to travel in sublime comfort. Maybe I'll go and have a look at ebay for a cheap CX Familliale or whatever they're called...

be a good base! I see where you're coming from but the stress on the chassis of that would make it inconcievable I think. I'm thinking of a standard CX estate with a beefed up rear end. The connecting chassis components would be too long to make it feasible though I think. I might be worng, and if someone does it I'll be in my garage self flagellating hmmmkay?!?!?

You'd have to find a way of braking the rear wheels though, to keep it road legal, and with all that extra weight over the rear just to get the thing to stop in a half safe distance!
I like the idea of a demountable camper, I don't see why some beefy legs/bolt on triangulation wouldn't result in it being perfectly usable off the truck. That Defender one's really cool, and there could be much less wasted space in a pick-up with a full width tailgate too.

I think it may be a job for the summer! I have loads of marine ply in the garage and some 2x4s and soffit boards so may give it a go!
If it ends up about 400kg fully built then i cant imagine loading/unloading being too hard, if i can find the correct centre of gravity i will just buy another hi-lift farm jack and use one each side with some legs to slide down on each corner, should be easy! Or atleast it is in my head

the whole idea of demountables is they can be left on site & the truck be used.
