It is indeed good news! 👍
The plan is to fit a new knock sensor, new fuel filter, clean the TB, clean the MAF and the ICV. Hopefully this will sort it.

Right, I replaced the knock sensor and it's still chugging at idle and pinking when revved hard. Once it's revved the revs drop and it cuts out.
I've cleaned the throttle body & MAF. I've ordered new vacuum hose from Thiefbay so I'll replace all that. I've looked at the plugs (which were put in about a month ago) and they're black and look terrible. The dizzy cap and rotor arm are showing some wear and the leads look worse for wear.
My plan of action is- Replace dizzy cap and rotor arm Replace the leads Replace all the vacuum hose (when it arrives) Replace the coil
Am I barking up the wrong tree here? I've been told that the timing may be an issue?

Well, I replaced the vacuum hoses, Leads, Plugs, dizzy cap, rotor arm and finally the coil. Tested the dizzy and it's OK. Basically, a compression test has shown that there's hardly any in cylinders 1 & 2 It looks like the head gasket has gone between the cylinders so next weekend, I'm chugging over to my moms (where I have room to work) the head is coming off to have a look. If it isn't that, maybe the cam? It's blowing out slight grey/white smoke so that matches up with the head gasket. If it's not the HG, I'm going to just stick another engine in. From what I've learned, I can use a 2.0 bottom end from a mk3 GTI with the 1.8 head and I could use the same ECU? If I had the money, I'd go for a 1.8T but alas, I'm limited. What would be the most straight forward? I've been told to just break the car etc but I've put a LOT of work into it and I'm not giving up. My VAG tech mate is going to help so that's a BIG bonus.

See 6th reply down! I had this exact same problem with a tuned 2.0 astra i bought. Had the turbo technics kit on and the seller kept saying he`d had it round the local garages and it was this that and the other sensor that had gone. But no one had done a comp test so got it home and it was cylinders 2 and 3 so popped a new gasket on and away it went. Cant believe your `vag tech mate` didnt do a comp test as a first port of call tbh.

My "VAG tech mate" has been in Benidorm since the 20th and came back yesterday. I changed the cheapest stuff first and had it tested by my father-in-laws' mate after he offered. He didn't charge me for it either, which is a bonus.

I had a 1.8 digifant with similar problems , turned out the tensioner had siezed and the belt had slipped a few teeth worth checking as its something people scrimp on . That and then various monkeys fitting exhaust gaskets back to front and upside down caused all sorts of ball ache .
