i've been away, something to do with all the nice cars i can't have about the place, but now i'm back with four of my own wheels I think this qualifies as a hybrid, series IIa with a bunch of series III parts and the discovery 200 tdi engine and gearbox, got parabolic’s too. and defender doors with lightweight door tops… this came off in the first ten minutes. much better next week i got under it and adjusted the brakes, and a few more horrors were found under the mud, like both the drums have the edges all snapped off from someone hammering them, i didn't get em off either, so they were just adjusted blind until i find the right whitworth bolt to screw into the drums. Also the clickers for adjusting the shoes don't click, i got it pretty close but i'll have to have another go at it. First hole, left front, any one know what thinkness metal should i repair it with? Want to paint it mid grey, but what i got is a bit too dark, so i'll use it for the under side/axle and so on love the name, ;D only clocked up about 50 miles so far, loving it.

That looks cool, though it does look suspiciously like a later series 3, less said about that the better The rear bar work does look pretty funky, any idea what it was used for? I would use 2-3mm steel to repair the hole in the chassis.

it really is a 2a, the only bits left 2a are the seat bench, the bulk head and the rear of the truck cab... blue bits. the bars were for a carrying a kayak, i'll either mount a fold out tent on it or chuck it all together, no idea yet what i want.

Cool, will have to show the bars to my brother, something he'd probably be interested in for his Land Rover, I think they should stay, even better if you can find a good use for them, makes it stand out from the rest

I really love these old series landrovers, i was on the lookout for one myself till i realised that one would not fit in my garage lol, hence the little fiat instead! Keep us updated.

109 2a chassis is corner welded box section, i'll say nowt else except to agree that you want 2-2.5mm plate to repair any rot areas i've an 88" bitsa along similar lines that i bought as a 2a before i learnt anything about landrovers, had a knackered (in my opinion) 2.25d in it which quickly got swapped for a 200tdi and 3.54 diffs, it's a proper rough looking hooligan tool that i don't mind gaining the odd "character" mark on my "daily" though is a 1965 109 2a with 200tdi and 3.54 diffs they're both great fun bookmarked

2mm it is then, plan of attack for tomorrow (if the weather behaves) is to cut a bigger hole on the side of the chassis, weld in a plate at the bottom (welding from the top, in side the rail) then plate up the side. vertical arc welding ain't fun, but at least it's not upside down arc welding. also i may try and get to a car wash and try to knock off some of that mud.
i've heard a 3.54 diff swap for salisburys axle if a bit of a pain? even with an lt77, the engine rpm feels right at about 40mph, would rather that be 50mph.

Some people say the diff just pops out, others say you need to 'spread' the case to get it out. I've done a smaller variant of the Salisbury axle and the diff came out with a few good hard taps of a large mallet. Is it permanent 4wd with LT230, or selectable?

LT230 is permanent 4x4 but I wouldn't particularly worry about it due to the centre diff unless of course you have that diff in "locked" on tarmac
only time you're really going to notice it is in turning tight corners where you'll get the uj's in the front axle kick back on the steering a bit
as already said you could change the LT230 for a different one as there's three standard ratios, 1.2:1 then 1.4:1 and finally 1.6:1
salisbury diff generally isn't too much trouble to change from what I understand, it'd be worth your while introducing yourself on OLLR and then looking round the sites workshop area for a description/howto, one of the lads has done a writeup I think (don't just dive in asking questions, a little effort introducing yourself first will go a long way)
p.s. don't even think of describing that truck as a 2a on OLLR, it's a bitsa at best but at least it's a leafer

Had a look around for the best forum to ask questions, i hate the gay bashing narrow viewed'ness of OLLR. Example: hey guys i fitted a defender wi..BURN IT WITH GAY FIRE!! i mean i still have chrome bumperettes on the rear cross member... today is wet, so no welding in the rain will spend time researching lt230 transfer box's, thanks lads.

Sometimes there is a label on the rear face of the LT230 stating the ratio, although it has probably fallen off over time. As the transmission was originally from a Discovery, it is most likely 1.2 ratio. There is a rare 1.0 ration from 3 speed auto v8 Range Rover's, and apart from that you're looking at diff swaps or even an overdrive is an option.

There's a massive hint in the forum's name though It started off as a bit of a sanctuary from both the "If it ain't jacked up 6" and on tyres the size off the moon then it's curse word" and the "what, take my immaculate, 100% period correct restored Land Rover off road, you mad?" brigades. Once you've adapted to the sarcastic humour and general attitude of the place, they are actually a very pro- active, friendly and genuine bunch on there. Many a time has one or more member gone waaaaaay beyond the call of duty to help out another. But if you aren't especially thick skinned then you may well be better off looking elsewhere yes

i'll agree the OLLR crowd/forum can be a bit offputting to folks at times but it certainly is one that deserves getting to know, a lot of the folk on there have known each other for a fair number of years and the "gay" references aren't aimed at folks sexuality they're a pretty blunt bunch that have an odd humour but collectively also have an excellent knowledge of these old motors, i've had several great weekends away with them don't be in too much of a rush to dismiss the forum and the folks that populate it, if you can i'd get yourself to "Leafers at T'Pit" later this year, a pretty good leafsprung landrover show organised by enthusiasts for enthusiasts and there you'll personally meet a fair few of the more prominent members most likely taking the curse word out of each other or fixing each others motors, i'll be there burning wood and imbibing a little

I prefer more grown up discussion, if OLLR didn't exist it would have to be invented. But it's still not for me, what if i waned to fit an IFS and do baja? sacrilege i can here them say. landrovernet looks nice but i would want a projects section rather then just a general/'it all goes here' section
