I know this question's going to have been asked on here a few times, but it gets to a point where there's a minefield of info, and it all just gets kind of boggling, so I thought a fresh start might be nice. I'm soon going to be wanting something to share daily duties with the 'rocco, because I like having space, and I'm pining for something old and characterful. So I'm wanting to get hold of an old estate of some sort that in the long run I'll plan to fit LPG to, so it can be used for road-trips and moving larger objects, or if/when the Sciroccos broken or being worked on. What I'm thinking, is something fairly spacious, so a full-size (by british standards) estate car, preferably capable of averaging close to 30mpg, and able to be fixed in a lay-by with some chewing gum, an elastic band and some bits of bailer twine found at the roadside, as any good car should be. It needs to be able to comfortably seat for adults, and being able to fit a mountainbike in the boot (seats up, bikes wheels off) is a big bonus. Age wise I'm thinking '60/70s, something characterful and old, as great as they are I'm not so interested in Sierras/B3 Passats and the like. I'm not really fussed about performance, as long as it'll cruise at 80ish without being too thrased. I'm guessing It'll probably have to be something fairly unloved, as I'm not rolling in cash. So what suggestions do you guys have? I'll list a few of my ideas to give a clue as too what sort of thing I'm thinking of, but I'm open to all ideas, as when the time comes I'm sure it'll largely depend on what's for sale at that moment! (Not looking to buy right now, just planning ahead, so current for-sale adverts will be dismissed as 'depressing'. (although they do give a good indication of price I guess)

If you want true 60's/70's how about a Triumph 2000/2500 estate? not sure how id feel about using one daily though, mpg might not be great Vauxhall Victor estates look cool, but I bet they're tricky to find Or if space isn't a huge issue, a mini traveller/countryman?

Cunning indeed rmad. I'm not too clued up on E-bay so that's is handy, cheers. Only trouble's that everything on there's either comedy prices or not really a 'proper' estate It still gives some good inspiration of things I could look out for tattier examples of though. Thanks. Mark, Thanks! I'd completely forgotten about the 505's, which is silly because I'd love one! I guess it all depends on whether one's actually for sale at the time. (Edit, when I say comedy prices, I mean over-priced, not expensive because it's genuinely valuable, and when I say proper estate, I mean things like a Mini's too small to be any advantage over a normal hatch really, and a Range Rover's not an estate car)

that vista is nice, very rare, specially the early ones (64 was the first year) and very honestly priced. And wagons in general are super kool. Whoever refers to them as granny mobiles doesnt get it. Now, that pug.....oh my!

;D That vista is amazing, and I'd love it, but I'm a little too broke, and would need a spare mobile half parking space to carry around if I ever hoped to stop anywhere.
Adam, The Victor and Triumph are both great suggestions, exactly the sort of thing I'm thinking of. The Mini's a little small unfortunately, but I do love them.
I'm not after a daily as such, it'd probably see 50/50 use along side the 'rocco, I'd keep doing my daily commute and other things where I only need to carry me in the Scirocco, but if I wanted to go for a weekend away, or head to Wales mountain-biking, or anything else where I big comfy estate could be handy, or I wanted to take the Scirocco temporarily off the road then the new car would be used.

As far as I know, this Victor is still available. I was in discussion with him before I made my latest purchase and apparently it doesn't need a lot to get it fixed. Certainly nothing beyond your skill set Robin.

Lovely 'tina. I'd do dirty things to it thou There is a Victor wagon near me for 2.5K that is just like the police one in this page. Its in original rather ruff condition so i wouldnt ever buy it for that amount, but it certainly has potential.

Id reccomend a carlton estate all day long.. Love mine to bits.. Will cruise at 90 all day long if ya want,., And its only a 2.0 4 pot. They come in 3.0 6 pot form too HUGE load space.. Although, its not 70's... An old victor might fit the bill.. I had a FB estate... That was nice.. Albeit very rotten..

looking at that ebay ad for the granny estate i took a peek at the other cars for sale showed below, and gotta say that you guys have it easy! Not only there is a bit of everything, but the prices are almost half of what they go for over here. Yeah, i know its in £ and not euros, but still. If it wasnt for the steerin wheel on the right i would consider buying there and drive it back.

Citroen CX Break or in Tissier version if you want extra space. If they turn up a big Japanese car would fit the bill, like this toyota:

Like I said, I'm not buying anything this second, I've not got the cash spare. I'm hopefully moving sometime soon-ish, and it'll be something to buy after I've moved (if I do). So currently for sale stuff's just pointing out what I can't buy. Still nice to get an idea of prices though, and ideas of other cars that are out there. I'm just collecting ideas at the moment, and seeing if there's anything I fall in love with.
The fords are all good, but seem to be lots of money even for tatty projects in need of quite a lot of work. Vauxhalls and Mercs seem to be much better priced, which is interesting, I was expecting the Mercs to be more.
Love that Victor that Will posted, and yeah, most old Japanese stuff would very much fit the bill, only trouble's finding it!
I like Lada's, I'm just not sure they're big enough for what I want, the main thing I want the space for's mountain-bikes, so width is more important than height.
Carltons I like, but they're newer than I want, I'd consider one as a back-up option if I need to do more miles than I expect to, but I'll be hoping for something much older. To be honest if I don't go old and quirky I'll likely just end up with a diesel Audi.
