Early TTs are getting really quite cheap, but as has been said there are a lot of neglected examples out there. The chap that does my MOTs had one in the other week that he was sick to death of seeing, it had been back to him several times for various things. The older ones can have problems with the electrical system, especially the clocks, which means you're into using a specialist or (heaven forbid) a dealer to get them put right. At the price point the cheap ones are in you could easily end up spending more than the car cost on having it put right. That said, I love em, I used to sell them for a living. My favourite is the 240PS TT quattro sport, if only for the awesome seats: ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v153/David87/2005-Audi-TT-Quattro-Sport-Interior-1920x1440.jpg)

I've literally just sold mine. It was a 2004 225 Quattro and was one of the best cars I've ever had. Mine had FK Coilies, Votex front bumper, remap, 3" DP, decat and system, injectors and a slightly toyed with turbo (K04s) and was circa 300bhp. Was an absolute hoot to drive IF you put the early suspension bush conversion on, which eliminates the understeer. Mine was Brilliant Black with Anis Yellow (light cream) leather and was a really nice place to be. They really don't feel dated at all inside and are surprisingly practical.
Mine used to get 40mpg on a run, high 20s around town and wasn't even that bad when you gave it gun.
They have a reputation for being unreliable, but as someone said, that's just due to neglect.
Can't recommend them enough.

I looked at a few of these, they look great, but the drive is horrible!!! cramped, curse word driving position etc etc , I was really disappointed So I ended up with a Mini Cooper S which I never thought I would own, but boy are they fun ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) , they go well, handle great, drive nice (once you bin the run flats) are roomy inside, come with loads of kit and they look fantastic, I got more fun for my buck defo But still the TT looks awesome but as I said really disappointed Just my opinion ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Really? I'm 6ft2 and found mine perfect. Admittedly it took me a little while to get it right and you literally couldn't slide a piece of paper between the back of the driver's seat and the rear bench. I really wanted a Cooper S but hated the driving position. Swings and roundabouts I suppose ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

I looked at one to replace my Octavia RS. I love the styling - so revolutionary when released and the interiors are special too.
It's a shame the drive didn't match the looks. The Octavia could never be described as a tidy handler, it would scrabble for grip in the first three gears and torque-steer like a pig. But at least it was fun. Nail the TT off a roundabout and it would do it without fuss, but it felt no quicker than the Occy and rather dull and uneventful.
I'd still have one but it would be a daily rather than a toy.

i have a 1.8t model 53 plate 150bhp soft top so nothing special but I must say I am liking it as it returns approx 40mpg but mine is also gas converted so for me its a cheap running car with quite a big boot but retro yet?

These definitely are relevant on here if..... They are modified. We see a lot of cars on here these days that are not retro at all, but seem to get good responses from the community. So these could fall into that category. Let's not be silly and think that mofified well = retro though. To reflect the scope of this forum we would more accurately name it retro and modified rides. They're not necessarily the same.

So now that part one of my devious plan is in place.... MWAHH - HA - HA - HA ........ [evil genius]LAUGH[/evil genius]
Next question is whether anyone has fitted a removable, or permanent Towbar/Towhitch to a TT ?
I have in mind as a primary focus a 2 wheel drive, rather than the Quatro.
This will ultimately be a Daily Driver, now that we have spoken about it (Nicola still has to test drive one, and park it in a Tesco/Asda/Sainsburys/ALDI carpark) She was very taken with the New Beetle a few years ago, but gutted at how little she liked it when she actually got up close and personal.
I use her car to tow my trailer for Trials or Council tip runs, so need a towbar somewhere in our lives.
I seem to recall the Quatro could not be fitted with a towbar for obvious reasons, but still worth asking.
Part 3 of this devious plan will be to make it look "right" as she wants fairly standard at the moment.
But, I suspect if she sees some modded ones on decent wheels, it may sway her.
So if you have any nice pics in your stash, post away.

According to the TT owners club it's a big fat no go on the towbar I'm afraid buddy;
"In Europe (this may not apply to the USA contributor to this discussion) all vehicles registered after a certain date (1st Aug 1998?) must be type approved for a tow bar by the manufacturer.
This means that the manufacturer has to incorporate fixing points for a tow bar to be mounted and any tow bar fitted to that vehicle must use those fixing points.
The mk1 TT does not have type approval or those fixing points
I assume the same applies to the mk2 TT
Fitting a tow bar to a vehicle which is not type approved or a tow bar which does not use the manufacturers fixing points it illegal. This will invalidate your insurance!"

I've drive loads of them, they're pretty capable cars but exceptionally dull. My mate's got a 400-odd hp one with trick suspension and it's still dull as ditchwater going round corners (it's still very quick through them, just not involving enough for me)
