I've had one of these pop up on my radar today and shamefully I have to admit to not knowing a great deal about them, I've done a bit of a search but the majority of the topics seem to from waaaaaaay back. So I ask you this, you bunch of knowledgeable forum dwellers, what are they like to live with and more importantly where do I need to look for rust when checking it out later? I couldn't tell you the last time I seen one of these over here... Pic related, it's the car!

Mate had D reg one from around 2-3 years old. It replaced a Rover 216 Vitesse of same age that was nothing but trouble. He kept it for around 5 years and in that time it had rear shocks (expensive as electrically adjustable) and I had to change the clutch master but otherwise it was just routine servicing. In the end he gave it to his son-in-law who ran it into the ground and then sold it cheap to one of his friends. It's still driving round now ! Mate reckons it was one of the best cars he's ever owned. Went like stink as well.

I've had a couple. The early ones had electronically adjustable shocks (basically a knob on the dash saying soft-medium-hard), don't think it did anything really, later ones had just normal shocks. The earlier cars also had a little compressor in the drivers seat to inflate the lumbar support!
Good cars, usual rust suspects, rear arches, boot floor, etc.
Its basically a Silvia engine (CA18ET), but with a different cylinder head for the dizzy (dizzy driven off a cam at the end of the head, Silvias is half way down the head iirc).
130bhp I think so fairly quick, a tweak on the boost (7psi as stock) to around 10psi livens things up a bit.
Other than that, a great car!

I had one, bought for the Scumball Rally. Had tweaked boost with a Volvo intercooler and running R32 Skyline front brakes. An absolute hoot of a car.

Cool, so definitely worth a punt then from the sounds of it, providing it's not a rot-box. Just to add, if I get this then it'll be replacing the Honda which ill have to find a new home somewhere...

Bought one of these dirt cheap many moons ago, took a lot of a abuse before the clutch and gearbox went on it and it got left outside a mates until it got towed away. Was a great little car, nice to drive and went well too. Mine had the adjustable shocks but as has been said I don't think they did a lot

if it's anything like the u11 bluebirds, and from my limited experience poking around rusty later bluey's they will be they'll probably have rotted out the seatbelt mount on the rear nearside, around the fuel filler area - also do the tail of the sills too although if it's been looked after, those bits might well be ok I'd say go for it mk2 golf coilies will fit the front too

Almost on the road: b11 sunny breadvan, e36 tds, 325i skidcar,

not for a while: ford pop, 32 rails,
not in this lifetime: ruby, '29 hillman

Well, been to look at it and it seems solid in all the places that are mentioned above. The boot floor looks immaculate as does around/in the filler neck area. There's some slight rust starting to show on a couple of the doors and some surface rust on the roof so it's in need of a small amount of work at the very least. Interior isn't too shabby apart from a mahoosive hole in the drivers seat and a worn steering wheel.... Didn't manage to hear it running as the battery was dead (and my boosters at the sisters) but water looked clean, no smell of fuel from the oil and the block looked pretty clean. Guess that just leaves one thing really, how much do these go for? The lad has no idea what he want's for it, or if he does he's not wanting to say... Oh, needs re-testing for an MOT too, not quite as straight-forward as the UK ones either....

For some reason the T12/T72s 1986-1990 don't have many rust issues compared to the earlier u11 1984-1986, my t12 is almost immaculate and I have seen many in the same condition. Many of the rusty ones will have met their maker. Solid and reliable.

Nope, didn't buy it in the end. As far as I know it's still for sale, just couldn't justify buying it when I really should be concentrating on repairing the Westfield.

Hate to resurrect a dead post, but the idiot who bought it was me! No good then? Well it looked nice and ran well enough, albeit with a slightly rough idle. Interior was tatty and damp, but all in it's rightful place. When i got it home, me being me, i took the bodykit off to "have a look" and managed to uncover fairly extensive amounts of rust around the rear arches. Rust has also attacked the boot, drivers door and just above the windscreen. Is it structural, no, so it can be brought back to life without the need for replacement panels and welding. Would I have bought the car knowing what lurked beneath the bodykit? No, unless I was drunk...very drunk.
