Cheers guys. Duncan - I've got a set of 3 point static belts to go in once once I've refitted the headlining and c pillar trims. They are pretty straightforward to fit, but the bolts go in at odd angles, so it's worth fitting them without the carpet/headliner in the way so you can see how it all goes together. Otherwise (especially with the central bolts) it will take ages to get the bolts installed properly. There is a pretty comprehensive guide on the 924oc forum with good pictures (IIRC you're a member?). How did the painting go? Cheers Duncan No, not a member anymore. Painting is all done now, just need to rope in some free labour to help me fit the bonnet.

What's the performance like with the bike carbs on? I put a set of 40s on a 924 many moons ago, it went a little better and sounded the part.

Not getting much spare time now due to my little baby daughter but she was out with her mum today so I grabbed a few hours. I didn't post up a picture of the completed respray so here you go.. Love it, so much better than before. Pondering a black roof though... Anyway, I fitted my new RS style door cards today. My brown door cards have been tucked away as they're in good nick and I may want to go back to original one day. I bought a pair of manky black ones ages ago and stripped off the vinyl The board was soaked and falling apart which was fine for what I had planned. Using them as a template I cut new hardboard to size. I then removed the old stuff and glued in the new I filled in the old electric window switch holes with fibreglass then covered the whole panel with spray glue and veltrim. Made the door pull out of some scrap leather from an old sofa and voilà. I think they look really good. Buoyed by my success I then gave the car a quick clean, sorted some bits of over spray and painted the headlight surrounds. Still have the headlining to fit then I'll be done Interior/exterior. I've had to order a set of exhaust manifold gaskets, studs and an angled drill attachment because I noticed today that the bottom stud on cylinder no.1 has been snapped off. I've removed all but 2 of the studs to get the manifold off, just need to remove the starter and possibly the steering shaft to get at them. Then its some precarious drilling and ez out action. Good times.

That's looking really good. And I like the simple door cards. Keep it up and it'll be really smart and zipping about the place in no time. Cheers Duncan

Congratulations on the baby! I also have a 10 month old daughter too.
Back to your car. I love that colour! Is it like a plastic dip?

Brilliant evolution of an excellent car. Was planning on painting mine satin red this summer. Whilst a little disappointed that you got there first, it does at least confirm that it'll be special.

I'm aiming for something close to the current Guards red, but going to do some testing first by borrowing some cans from my brother in law (a graffiti artist). Been itching to paint something satin for such a long time now that I'm also pondering painting my 540i as well...

Look forward to seeing it. There's an BMW E46 around here in a bright satin red that looks nice.

I can't believe almost a year has passed since I updated this thread. It's also been a year since I even thought about my 924. My daughter turned 1 earlier this month and in the past year with running my own business and being a doting daddy I've had more than enough on my plate. Recently though I've been looking at the poor little chap at the bottom of the garden and decided that I really need to get it sorted. So to recap last year whilst my wife was heavily pregnant I busied myself with respraying the car and ripping out the K-Jet and replacing with Kawasaki Ninja carbs. It was running ok but never quite right. The main issue was air leaks with the hose used to attach to the manifold. I redesigned the manifold to allow me to use the Ninja carb to head rubbers which are bolt on and hold the carbs much more securely. It was quite tight between the plates so had to go back to studs and stainless nuts. The carbs were then bolted up to the manifold. The rubbers have vacuum takeoffs which I've plumbed in to the servo. I then bolted on my home brew trumpets which I made using bass trumpets from an audio suppliers. The airbox that I made last year has been retired as it caught on the bonnet and I really couldn't be bothered trying to reprofile it. I got a bargain pair of Pipercross bike airfilter from eBay for £16 which will do for now. I've not got any photos but I've also got a wideband gauge and lambda fitted to get the mixture set properly. Next job is to get it up and running and balanced.

Just had a proper read through this thread and it's excellent. I really really like the early 924s and I think yours suits the steelies. Looks so base spec its cool Bet the bike carbs sound incredible. You make it seem far too simple an install though haha! Almost looks like a kit to be honest. One question though... your door cards. Did you just glue the new door card over the top of the shagged one then retrim the whole lot? or did you get rid of the old tatty bit. Fancy doing the same to mine and not sure how to go about it.

Cheers, it didn't seem too simple when I was cursing and throwing spanners around! With the door cards I cut the top section off and fixed to new hardboard. I think I ended up using some builders adhesive.

AFR gauge is the best thing I have ever bought! It's the Innovate one, got it off a guy for £50 who couldn't get it to work right. Works fine so far so I'm happy. Anyway I've only balanced and set up the idle mixture so far and my original settings were miles out! My idle screw was originally 3.5 turns out but needs to be 5 which is way too much so I need to get bigger pilot jets. Next up I need to have a little test drive to set up the mains and needles. I have a set of dynojet needles and some drills so should be all set in the next week.

My pilot jets arrived today so when I finished work I stole an hour to get them changed. Whipped the carbs off (yet again), getting quite quick at this now! Drained the float bowls and whipped off the covers. The pilot jets are the recessed ones next to the mains. The pilots are tiny little things compared to the mains. They're sized under 1mm, the ones in are .35 and the new ones are .50 ones from a Harley Davidson. Once they were all changed I refitted the carbs and fired her up. The idle mixture screws are now at 2 turns out for 14ish on my AFR gauge which is about right. When I finish work tomorrow i'm going to have a quick drive round the block and try to set the mains and needles.

I've been ill the last few days so only got chance to have some car time this afternoon and the 924 has thrown up another annoying problem.
As left with the new pilot jets in it was idling sweet at 14 on the afr gauge and 2 turns out on the mixture screw. Tried to start and could not get it to fire.
Whipped the carbs off and gave everything a blow thru with the air line, checked for spark and fuel etc and everything was fine. I didn't change any settings or anything whatsoever.
Carbs back on, coaxed into life and it idles fine. Problem is that afr is now reading 9 which is really rich. Turned the mixture screw down to 1, then half a turn and it's still at 10!
I did think it was a problem with the lambda but it is obviously rich and the exhaust stinks so what the fxxx has happened here?
My best guess is that the carbs had a blockage somewhere which has now cleared leaving me with a too large pilot jet?
Does that sound likely?

Hi, Sorry I don't know enough about carbs to assist with your problem but I have been following this conversion with interest so please stick with it. Might be best putting a post in the 'technical bit' section where more people are likely to see it. -Steve-

Sorted it anyway I think, was a blockage somewhere. Seems to be running ok now. Made the decision to sell off all the K-jet stuff I took off to fund some more bits ands pieces. Already got £100 for the fuel dizzy so happy days. I was going to keep it all to have the option to put it back to standard if I ever sold the car but in all honesty I can't see me ever selling it. No matter how much it does my head in.
