Wow what can I say apart from Thanks! on arrival at the gathering with my 'family unit' + Paul and Gemma (Lard44 and mrs Lard44) I was gobsmacked to see and hear a lifted american police jeep driving round the campsite rounding people up for an auction on behalf of myself, Paul and Rich (drdick) I'm ashamed to have not thanked enough people involved at the time, but the sudden onset of torrential rain and a mankini caused a sudden crowd dispersal (hopefully no-one will post pics of the man in mankini as even on a nsfw forum they would probably cross the line!! ) a big thanks goes to KFW for his sterling comedy act auctioneer skills and I am forever grateful to those fantastic people who donated tat and a large amount of stuff that was most definitely not tat - and then bought it all back again people who we have never met and probably not even talked to on the interwebz walking up and adding turbo's and event tickets etc to the pile made Paul and myself pretty emotional. I don't have the words to express just how wonderful it is to feel part of such a caring group of people. I have long held the opinion that stuff is just that and the only thing that is really important is people. you guys and gals have just underlined that for me.

welcome simple as I can't add any more than that aside from wishing I could have witnessed/ partaken in the the auction rather than just adding to the tat

I've long held the opinion that this place best represents the idea of what a true internet community should be. This story just underlines it.

Hairnet - thanks Craig - thank you Mr damaged - thank you and i hope you back is better for sleeping in a real bed ps. please take my post as being from the lardmeister and DrDick also. I have spoken to Rich, who was unable to attend the gathering due to last minute work commitments, but i am sure will be along as soon as his work allows him to take a breath . Paul is now AFK for a week of much needed cider quaffing and cheese eating in a Somerset field and it appears his 'smart' phone is allergic to fresh air .

I think as fellow petrolheads, we can all imagine what a terrible thing losing your workshop and everything in it would be, even though it is just stuff.
The RR community is the best.

I was gunna put a post up asking how it went as I donated but couldn't be there, hopefully we raised enough for a few flameproof mugs and an asbestos biscuit tin to get the next round of projects moving for all 3 of you, once you're all back on your feet.

Great to be able to help out Mel, I was determined to get something from that auction to help out, who would have thought it would be some 13" micra wheel trims, even though i don't own one That was the point of the auction though, even if you don't want something, or you end up buying back your own haynes manuals (good one Kev), all that mattered was some dosh to help you to get back on your feet

people who we have never met and probably not even talked to on the interwebz walking up and adding turbo's and event tickets etc to the pile made Paul and myself pretty emotional. That was me that brought over the Autosport tickets. I felt it was the least I could do given your situation and I'd like to think that people would do the same if it happened to us. Although I'm not a regular reader and poster I fully embrace what the whole Retro Rides forum stands for and as a spectator to the auction it was very humbling. Although I have just had to explain to my colleagues why someone is wearing a Mankini in one of my photos! Cheers all, James (p.s could the girl that won the tickets please email me sooner rather than later with your details and i'll get the passes arranged for you)

What Hairnet said - you're welcome. Even as someone who only played a very small part of it, I feel proud of what the community has achieved. Even if we were mostly drunk at the time. I didn't hear if the funds have managed to get to you yet following the lack of Mels at the prizegiving. I think I speak for everyone involved when I say that I hope it helps, even in a small way. And James - the donation of the tickets was very generous. A brilliant contribution.

I've never met you as far as I know, but a community is a community regardless of whether its 'home' is a physical place or online. It just happens that this online community comes together once a year and it brings out the best in all of us. I'm proud to have been able to donate in some small way. Kev being a drunken auctioneer trying to stop his also drunken Mrs Kev from bidding on stuff he already owned was just the icing on the cake!

Due to lack of planning, lack of transport, fear of camping and someone 5 levels of management above me at work passing down some ludicrous edict I was unable to attend the gathering. I wish I could have made it, hopefully next year.
Mel rang me on Sunday morning to tell me what you guys did and I'm totally blown away. He probably couldn't tell on the phone but I couldn't really think what to say. I'm only a small person here, making a few posts and putting up some pics of my resto but what people did for some guys that they basically don't know is affirmation about how cool this forum is and how most people are genuinely decent, kind and generous.
The only way I can pay you all back is to promise that the next build will be sillier, more ambitious and more fully detailed right here. I also have a picture of myself in a mankini from my holiday last year. Since that seems to be popular I'm happy to share that as part-payment although I cannot be held responsible for any moistening that may result.

Proud to have been part of it, if only in a small way. When kevfromwales suggested it, we thought we might make a couple of hundred quid, as a show of support more than anything else. But to see the bidding go up and up (possibly helped by rtlkyuubi bidding on EVERYTHING in sight) was just amazing. And the t-shirt and matching donation from the organisers was a great gesture too. Basically, what Ben said. It's a community, one that I've made some great friends from, and I'm happy to be part of it. And I got a new head unit out of it

Great spirit despite the dampness, excellent hosting by KFW, slightly disturbed by the (rather too close) mankini episode but did manage to get some great tat even though I was bidding against myself.
Hope HairyMel, DrDick and Lard44 can start to get sorted for amazing new projects and well done to everyone involved.

The Tat Auction was one of the highlights of RRG13 for me - had a great laugh, bought loads of tat I don't need AND helped out some fellow car nuts in their time of need. Win-win!

I can't really add anything that hasn't already been said other than to add my personal thanks to everyone involved in making RR13 so special. The auction was just a mind-boggling haze of tat, male nudity and selfless generosity and I can't begin to explain what it meant to Mel and myself...just...wow...
The level of genuine warmth and sympathy from the ENTIRE community has been utterly overwhelming-a thousand thankyous to everyone!
I'm taking a breather from petrol heading for a couple of weeks but I can assure you that the search for tools, cars and a venue is well underway. I can also only offer more and better updates to my own threads in the future.
Only on RR could a human life be worth half that of a kit kat chunky. Beautiful!

I loved the auction and found it only fitting to throw a few bit's of tat into the ring, I just hope the people who bought them find an use for them
