Obviously as we established yesterday at The Gathering the Porsche 924 is the new Beetle in terms of modifying ... so any Porsche experts want to give us some facts about the models, what to look out for and how far we can push things? I heard that the gearboxe/transaxle is fairly easy to overwhelm with power and break, is this true? Do they have parts interchangability with anything else?? Van engine, really? Have a zeitgesity Porsche 924 :

Lots of myths and miseducation surrounding 924's. One thing is for sure, they're a hidden gem if you get yourself a good one

Seriously underrated and under valued cars. Buy now I'd say

Great little cars, that turn heads. Watch out for hot/cold start issues leaky rear hatch, and missfire. Ive owned and enjoyed mine since the start of the year apart from some terrible wiring its been a joy.

This is my latest acquisition: I've been looking for a usable classic for the last few months - something interesting but reliable that I can spend more time driving than repairing. After buying one for my brother a few months ago the 924 was defiantly on the short list. They are beautifully screwed together, cheap for parts (as stated, lots of VW bits), simple and really easy to work on. They are also a lot of fun. Not a huge amount of power, but a great chassis to exploit what there is. They feel kind-of old to drive, the controls are quite heavy and the steering wheel is very upright and in your lap - that all adds the the charm for me.

Really surprisingly slow and quite bad of fuel but handle really well. If it hasn't been looked after expect the interior to be falling to bits. Do it if you can get one cheap, otherwise I'd get a 944.

Also it appears the 924 suffers less with rusty sills versus the 944

(Unless it's 'cause I'm used to old veedubs? )....but 125bhp on a small car like these is certainly able to keep up with things....okay I've got a larger throttle body and k and n filter (cheap upgrade) and as long as you the gears and drive it like you stole it...great! Handling is great too

whats the best route for lowering these? The back is beetle, so you can just re-index the torsion bars. The front is coil sprung, so the usual options - chopping, lowering springs, or coilovers. You can get a Gaz gold kit, not sure what else is out there... Cheers Duncan Ps, even if they aren't that fast, you're close to the floor, so it still feels fast. And the Turbo had 170 bhp so it is quick so long as you keep it on boost!
