Hey everyone, Recently I've been looking into the idea of fitting a set of bike carbs onto my Hillman Avenger. The engine is a modified 1600 out of a Sunbeam ti. The bottom end lightened and balanced, AVFR5 cam, Ex-works Talbot big valve head. What I need to know, is what bike carbs I should go for? Manifold - I'll make my own as I have a few twin 40 DCOE manifolds for these engines and will either split the carbs apart and space them to match the manifold, or use them as they come and cut a manifold back to the mounting face and make my own pipes to suit. I see some people, with other engines, use rubber pipe between the stack tubes off the manifold face onto the carbs. I'm assuming that due to the heat from the exhaust manifold directly below that I'll need to make the manifold pipes to the carbs out of metal. Please correct me if I'm wrong or you know another way. Many thanks in advance for any replies/info

Now, I'm no expert in this, but I've been looking. It seems to me that if you guage the carbs donor by halving the recipients engine capacity, you won't be far out.
ie, 1200-1400cc car engine would be 600cc bike carbs etc
If a bike engine is producing approx 120 bhp @ 12000 rpm, then they should power a car engine of the same target power imho
But as I said, i'm no expert

Thank you for that info Mr Speedy, much appreciated. I'm trying to gather as much knowledge as I can before I go ahead and buy some carbs and make a start on this.

I've run 33mm Mikuni carbs on 1.4 and 1.6 k series engines with great success.
You find them on Yamaha FZS600 Fazers. They also mount fairly horizontally too, rather than semi down draught like most sports bikes, and they come with a throttle potentiometer as standard if you wish to use megajolt.

I'm gonna stick with the standard Sunbeam electronic ignition for now as I'm not after ultimate power from this engine, just for it to be more efficient without spending loads on twin side drafts etc. I've got twin 40's of a Sunbeam ti and a set off an Avenger Tiger, but they are economy Webers and don't have all the jets/drillings that others have, hense the thought of trying bike carbs.
Thanks for the info Kieran.

ive done many bike carb conversions, and currently have two cars running on them that i use daily - after trying many different types, the ones that give me the most consistent results over and over again and the easiest to get right are the 38mm keihin's from a CBR900RR. If you need any help with setting up etc don't hesitate to drop me a pm
