Is the 5 pot diesel in the 156 the same as the volvo D5 unit? that may help with finding a rwd solution ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) mate of mine drove me about in a volvo D5 for a bit a while back and that sounded damn good too No the Alfa engine is completely different, plus all Alfa's & D5's were FWD only. The only RWD gearbox that would possibly fit the Audi 5cyl is a Volvo 740,940, V90 Turbo Diesel manual box as these used the the Audi/VW 5cyl diesel engine as fitting in the Audi 80's/ VW Transporters. The blocks are very similar to the petrol versions. Also some VW LT vans were fitted with the 5 & 6 cyl engines which again are based on the same block

Ta very much, I'm about to be called out on domestic duty but will have a look on my return. Just out of interest, do you know what flywheel and clutch I'll need to mount the T5 lump to the M50 gearbox?

If I'm not too late to the party, can I throw a bit of a curveball in here? I spent a couple of days being chaufeurred around the Pembrokeshire countryside in one of these: ![](http://I.ebayimg.com/t/Alfa-Romeo-156-Sportwagon-2-4JTD-Veloce-/00/s/MTA2NlgxNTk5/z/~8YAAMXQt~hSK0Xb/$(KGrHqJ,!qgFI,5)lfBRBSK0(bF0E!~~60_57.JPG) Mostly at about warp factor 11! It sounded bloody glorious and went far, far better than it had any right to. So what's the deal? Well, apart from the fact I don't know how you'd RWD it (don't we all like a challenge?) it's a 5 cylinder turbo. Diesel. And you can pick them up pretty cheap too....here's one of the first I came across: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Alfa-Romeo-156-Sportwagon-2-4JTD-Veloce-/141056096459?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item20d79938cbThe overtaking power was just brilliant and I can just imagine it in something like a Scimitar. And it'll be economical. AND don't forget that is sounds awesome! I'm tempted to chop the E34 touring in and get one myself. It must be an impressive car if I'm thinking of doing that! That 2.4 JTD engine is a gem, I worked for FIAT Auto (UK) when they were originally launched, and I remember leaving a 2.8i Capri Brooklands for dead lol ![(rofl)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/rofl.png)

Ta very much, I'm about to be called out on domestic duty but will have a look on my return. Just out of interest, do you know what flywheel and clutch I'll need to mount the T5 lump to the M50 gearbox? M50 or M90? If your talking about the M90 then you use an 850 T5 clutch & flywheel, you can use the later V70 stuff but its dual mass, as is the 960 stuff. The M90 is basically a RWD gearbox based on the FWD M56 (850/V70/V40) box, and a lot of the internals including gear sets are interchangable. M90 pic stolen from Wiki (NOTE picture is for the redblock not whiteblock) ![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/62/Volvo_m90_gearbox.jpg) More info on them in wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_M90_transmission

Don't bother with the Jag curse word. Takes ages just to get to the bloody spark plugs. They drink like a dehydrated horse and urm... oh have crappy coolant pipes that are made from wafer thin plastic that snap on the slightest of taps. Go for the Volvo ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Solid work horses, seen quite impressive power figures from Volvos too!

If your going for the volvo I would look at an early motor with cable throttke as the later electronic ones are hopeless and a lot harder to wire up . Budget on a few parts for the crank breather system and a new rear crank seal . Wiring is just powering up the ecu and fuel pump but leave the purge valve wiring and valve in to stop it showing a fault code , the early stuff isn't obd but has a little box in the engine bay with a jump lead and led for reading and clearing codes . I got a few diagrams off a volvo forum and it took a couple of hours to separate the bits of the engine loom I didn't need but I had the luxury of a donor car so I could get it running with the stripped loom before pulling the engine out . Plenty of spare holes on the inlet side for a mount and the bolt holes around what was the driveshaft bearing carrier on the other side would work . The downpipe in rwd layout would have to double back on itself but it also means you can come off the turbo with a nice straight piece with a generous bend to turn it back round . My donor had a chipped ecu but the td04 is all about low down spool and I've put an mbc in to keep the boost at 10psi rather than 14psi .
I had a manual 3 litre s type and it was pretty gutless below 3500 rpm

I had a manual 3 litre s type and it was pretty gutless below 3500 rpm TBH the Motoronic M4. is very easy to wire up, but that later ME7+ DBW is just as easy in fairness, there are only 6 wires from the pedal to ECU and is much neater to plumb in than a manual cable, also the ME7 engines have VVT. Its courses for horses, but neither would deter me, and the ME7 is a brilliant adaptive ECU which is easy to map compared the the M4.+ granted the ME7 is more invasive, but these can all be worked around now ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Ha, I'm back!
I meant M90 box, sorry about that. How hard is the 850 T5 clutch and flywheel to come by? Or does the 850 use the right flavour of T5 lump anyway?

The 850 has the right lump, but has the smaller turbo unless its from a T5R or 850R, all T5 V70 phase ones had the same 16T turbo as the T5R & 850R The hardest thing to find is the "whiteblock" M90 gearbox, flywheels and clutches are much easier to source, but if you start with an 850 you will have it anyway

Cool, cheers. Thanks very much for all the info, you have been a great help. I now know the basics of what I need and am compiling a shopping list accordingly. Now all I need to do is sell the Cortina and Escort!

Ok, I may have a 16T turbo sourced anyway but it's good to know where to look.
I just need to find a new custodian for my Cortina now.
Thanks.
