Model: VW Polo Breadvan MK3, LHD 1.3l
Year: 1991
Mileage: 151,138km (under 100k miles, work it out if you're bothered)
Tax: No
MOT: No, but we have a fail sheet with surprisingly little stuff on it. In particular the emissions test passed because the exhaust was blowing in so many places the tester "didn't know where to put the probe". In short, about 10 months ago it was rusty, needed new brake pads and a rear light cluster. Might be more rusty now and will need a new battery.
Pics: Loads, see below.
Location: Wickford, Essex
Price: £100 if you're braking it, the money will go to chartiy. Free to a good home if you're doing something fun with it. Will PX for all sorts of curse word, try me.

Okay, it's yet another Polo Breadvan up for sale...but this one's had a bit of a history.
Meet 'Marco' Polo:
This car started it's life in Germany somewhere, before being imported to the UK by a man I think in 2007 who couldn't possibly buy / drive anything else...it's that good.
We purchased the car for £300 on ebay without looking at it, as we had entered www.dakarchallenge.co.uk/challenge/dakhla+challenge/ and needed a banger.
Looking back, it seemed a shame to ruin it, as it was originally a lovely shade of mint green and in actually pretty good condition.
On the way home from somewhere in the midlands somewhere we realised we'd just bought a car with a leaky fuel tank (common problem on these polos) so were slightly concerned about the prospects of driving it 10,000km and into a different continent. So we got a new tank fitted by a very dodgy garage, as nobody else wanted to touch it.
It's a small car to take on such a long journey with three guys, we needed lots of kit and luckily the car was blessed with factory roof rails. We needed a roof rack but didn't want to spend any money. A plastic pallet wasborrowed stolen from work, turned upside down and exhaust clamped to the roof. Holes drilled for drainage...and weight-saving, yo.
Over the months leading up to the rally we lovingly decorated it, by spamming as many companies / charities / organisations as we could think of to ask for free stuff to put on a banger. About 1/4 responded...we got a lot of stickers from some excellent motoring organisations. According to the stickers, the car is fitted with 3 different brands of spark plug.
Sound systems installed with acoustic precision:
NGK custom shifter:
The car's paintwork was uninspiring and a bit rank. On the last weekend before departing for France we desperately needed to sort the brakes...so obviously we got our priorities right and bought some land-rover paint and brush-painted a two-tone, desert camo masterpiece. Stickers applied, various electrical modifications and we were ready to roll. Here's a few pics from the rally, the car made it to the Saraha, over the Atlas mountains, through the middle of Marakesh central market and back to tell the story...or sit in a driveway and rust:
Our only major problem was that the car ran so low ("slammed!" as the kids might say) because of 3 heavy guys and too much kit, that the exhaust frequetly got torn off it's hangers. This was obviously carefully repaired on a rock with a coat-hanger.
So, we got it home, with the full intentions of putting another MOT on it and taking it on another adventure, but it never happened and now it has to go. As in the title, we've put £100 on it to be in line with the rules, if someone takes it away with that in cash, we'll donate it to charity. If anyone wants to take it away for free, they're welcome as long as they are not scrapping it and do actually plan to restore it or take it on another banger rally.
So...what do you get?
- MK3 Polo breadvan, as in pics above, I've got the V5 for it, and in theory you could drive it off if you jump with with a fresh battery, and take it to the nearest MOT place (about 1 mile away) and try and get an MOT on it but realistically it'll need to be trailered.
- Comes with free boot full of useful stuff if you plan to take it on an adventure. Ratchet straps, a big jerry can, giant spade, spare light cluster to repair the busted one...unfortunately for a polo mk3 coupe, but it'll be worth £15 on ebay, a photocopied (pirated) haynes manual for the car. A spare battery, unknown condition. Army rations, lots of them.
- Here's a photo of the engine bay, you won't get much from this...we removed the pre-heater because it was rusty and about to fall off. Girlfriend'sborrowed stolen tights used as an additional filter for all the sand. I think that's all we touched. Engine turns over and will eventually fire, if you keep your foot down it'll idle too. Drives and stops onces the brakes unfreeze. Drags the rear wheels along until that happens.
So there you have it, take it away for free if it's going to a good home, otherwise I'll scrap it and give the money to charity. Charitable donations are welcome.
