This was the American/Canadian take on the Sierra XR4, it was sold as a Mercury but it failed to sell. While I was in Canada I only ever saw one. Just thought some of you guys maybe interested. had a 2.3l turbo charged engine and a T9 gearbox.

Some have been modified to make big power with monster turbos, never as nice as our Cossies but they never got them.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

The XR4i is one of my all time favourite cars (the first fast car I ever owned) and I always had a bit of a hankering for a Ti because of it's rarity and because I love LHD! One of these days....

Wasn't there a boy on here who moved from the South Coast to the US and bought one of these? I think there was a thread about how similar/different it was mechanically to a Sierra.
I've never understood why they needed to 'invent' a new brand for these and the Scorpios they sold in the US and Canada.

Well Ford couldn't use the name Sierra in north America because of the GMC sierra truck that came first, GMC got all nasty about it, secondly they already had a midsized saloon out there. The Granada was never intended for north America, god knows why they lauched a scorpio. Out of interest the mondeo name was never used either they used Taunus for the Ford version and Mercury Mystique (if you owned one you called it the Mercury mistake) because they blew gearboxes.

I've always had a soft spot for the XR4Ti, then again I've got a general soft spot for jelly moulds in general. Seems odd that they didn't market them with the Colonge V6 like in Europe, instead they used the 2.3 Lima lump from the 4 banger Mustang. Anyway I'd love to own one! This one is especially awesome....

Same 4 pot 2.3 engine was fitted in the Thunderbird and the Mustang, looks similar to a pinto but has almost nothing in common with one. I don't know why they chose that over their version of the cologne unless it was to big to fit, they couldn't use the YB from the Cossie (or sell the Cossie over there) because it didn't meet most states emissions regs.

Yeah the Lima is a bit of an odd one, and they were fitted to the Ford Pintos just to confuse matters I looked into them back in the 90's hoping they were the same as our Pinto, as I wanted to fit one into a MK2 Escort but as you say they are completely different.

The 2 litre engine sold in the States I believe was the Euro Pinto, but the 2.3 was the Lima engine, as stated visually similar but nothing interchangeable, they are about 4" longer.

I get the feeling that they weren't exactly seen as a successful person's car - Principal Skinner in the Simpsons had one...

was produced from 1985-1989 in that time only 42,464 where built and I can tell you especially in Canada its a fairly rare car, most have probably rusted out, canadas winters and salt are hard on any car.

When I first got internet access back in 94 these were one of the first things I found:-) Merkur was a separate brand from Mercury, and as well as the XR4ti they sold the Scorpio too. They first time I ever saw one was in the film Robocop. They make a brief appearance:-)
