A damn shame - the PPC day there in May was my favourite event this year
MALLORY PARK MOTORSPORT LIMITED TO BE PUT INTO ADMINISTRATION It is with great regret that Mallory Park Motorsport Limited has today announced that the company has been put into Administration. Mallory Park has been operating as a motorcycle and car race circuit for many years and has much history attaching to the circuit. In 1985 a highly restrictive Noise Notice was attached to Mallory Park Motorsport Limited ('MPML') embracing all circuit activities but, significantly, a number of the provisions within the Notice were very much open to interpretation. MPML has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council over the years and a level of understanding had been established to work within the 1985 Notice. Regrettably, however, this arrangement was placed under scrutiny by local residents some of whom were new to the village, who made representations to HBBC to apply the rigid interpretation of the 1985 Notice.

This pisses me off. Mallory Park has been there since the 50's so, if you buy a house nearby then you have to accept that, as it has been there for 70 years, you have no right to object to the noise. It was there before you were, if you don't, like it don't move there.
Bit like moving to Windor and complaining about the planes...
The same thing is going to happen to Brands Hatch, a new housing estate was built up near Sterlings Bends and the residents complain about the noise!
Understand we all have the right to a peaceful home but I also have the right to go and make a lot of noise on an established circuit.

Just realised I used 'noise' more times than is probably acceptable in the above post.
Must be because I am curse word off.
Noise.

If you live near a race track and you don't want to hear the noise invest in some good, thick glazing or stick some cotton wool in your lug-holes... Simple!!!
Here we have a historical race venue that will probably end up being turned into sub-standard new-build housing and that is just not right... How infuriating!!!
I do hope that some kind of 'rescue' takes place but I bet it ruddy well won't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Breaks my heart. I am nearly as old as the circuit, spent many happy ours as a lad there and later as a young rally driver did quite a few laps round the circuit. Scary, but great fun. As usual the doo gooders are slowly killing everything. Sad days.

I remember talking to one of the organisers when they first opened Rockingham. There was a piece on the local news showing one of the NASCAR-type cars following the camera car around the circuit. After it went on the news they got a handful of local residents calling the council to complain about the noise. The council asked Rockingham and Rockingham told them that a) the piece was filmed the previous day, it wasn't live, and b) the only noise they'd have heard was a fully-silenced street-legal Ford Ranger pick-up that was carrying the camera and TOWING the NASCAR which didn't even have an engine in it! It wouldn't be so bad if Rockingham wasn't built on the site of a vast steel works. I wonder if they ever complained about the steel works? Honestly, I think some people must sit around all day waiting for something to complain about...

its the same at castle combe and that was a WW2 airfield before it became a race circuit, and the cars are a dam sight quieter than a spitfire or wellington Thankfully, one of the councilors races at combe so some common sense is applied. Also the same as the lot that moved into a village, and then complained (successfully) that the church bells are too loud!

Right here is the other side of the story as I hear it :
MPML didn't have a license for the night time drifting at Awesomefest in 2011, but they let it go ahead anyway. The relatively lenient locals lodged a complaint (keep in mind that these are the locals that let the Supersaloons run at Mallory even though they are potentially over the stated dB limit) as it was unlicensed, at night, noisy and apparently annoyed a lot of people. This is the culmination of that complaint. MPML bought this on themselves.
There are some people that believe that this is a chance for MPML to sell the track as a going concern to another company that can have a friendlier relationship with the locals and get the noise levels back up. When I say another company,.. the belief is that the puppet masters will still be the same ultimately.
Hey everyone Mallory park "the friendly circuit"...

apparently there were rules brought in in 1985, they've never abided by them, the council knew this as well.

What? DRIFTERZ spoiling it for everyone else? You do surprise me.... Not 'teh drifterz', it could have been anyone. It's the circuit management's fault. It could have been a late night touring car meet, or a hot rod gathering, ultimately the blame rests on whomever let it go ahead, knowing it was outside of the agreement of the local residents.

OK, unlicensed night time noise is a bit different to the usual stuff. As said, it's a bit of an abuse of trust with the locals.
It's like me and my neighbours. My entire family are musical, and after loads of complaints from them we decided to go round and come to some sort of agreement. They now have to tolerate some noise during the day, as long as it's not excessive. They still tell us to shut up sometimes but we ignore them. We agreed that after 8pm, there would be no loud guitars, or drums, or friends, so if they shout over the fence or bang on the walls after that time, it's fair play and we have to stop what we're doing.
If you don't honour an agreement, expect the other party to react.
This makes it no less saddening to hear, so much history in one place just gone. I do hope someone a little more sensible comes along to save the place.

The latest from the Mallory web site----
Ian Robert of Kingston Smith & Partners LLP, the Administrator to Mallory Park (Motorsport) Limited, said today (Oct 3) that there have been “encouraging” talks with Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council and the landlord aimed at securing the future of the racing circuit.
He explained: “We are still very keen for Mallory Park to host racing again and are in discussions with a number of interested parties. There also now appears to be a way forward with the council and there have been useful talks with the landlord. These negotiations will continue; but this is a complex problem.”
Ian said that he could give no assurances about the future. “Although the talks have been encouraging and whilst Mallory Park is open for business, we are unfortunately unable, for insurance and administrative reasons, to continue with any track events.
“This situation may change. Whilst all track events next week have been cancelled, we are taking future events on a week-by-week basis and will be updating the website with information accordingly. Non-track events are unaffected.”
The Chris Walker Race School seminar on Wednesday, October 10 has been cancelled.
Interested parties in the sale of Mallory Park should contact Kingston Smith & Partners at MalloryPark@kingstonsmith.co.uk
Mallory Park has been operating as a motor racing circuit in the village of Kirkby Mallory, Leicestershire, since the 1950s.

This is quite interesting, taken from driftworks who I think have taken it from pistonheads.

There were many many breaches of the notice last year and previous years, the fact is, that HBBC decided to take five as a sample that happened to be Saturday use. What has transpired since is that BARC/MPML were found guilty of these breaches and it is clear that BARC understood what the real version of the notice meant. They seem to emphasise that they have only 92 days per year of usage when in fact they have 5 days per week. The landlord it transpires charge them an extortionate amount of rent but this was also made clear when BARC signed the lease in 2005, BARC also paid £200,000 dividends to their shareholders last year.. As a log term resident of Kirkby Mallory I am fed up to the back teeth of all the incorrect remarks on various social networking sites most of which have been put there by probably the very ones that come to the track race the balls of their bikes and then go home to their nice quiet homes, and are not fully aware of the facts, only what is fed to them from one side of the story. I have been a suporter of Mallory Park for many years and have lived quite comfortably with it when the Overends ran it. I have listened to both sides and more recently been updated with the facts about the 85 notice and what it allows, I have read most of the derogatory and probably liable remarks on the facebook page brought to my attention by my grandson. Therefore the reason for posting this on Pistonheads is because you all seem to be more level headed than others. Because of these idiotic comments, my support for the track has diminished and quite frankly I now feel that they deserve everything they get, the management of the track have only themselves to blame for contnually breaking what is a legal notice which in its self a criminal offence. There are a few facts that I have found out that need to be voiced whether you like it or not , to give a balanced view on this whole mess. • In 1985 a noise abatement notice was put on the track, this is because obviously there was a noise nuisance. This allows 2 noisy days a week and three quiet days, 5 working days, then it gives us residents two no use days –it has been like this for many years beofre BARC took over in 2005. • They signed the lease for the track and if their lawyers had done the work properly they would know this was the case. If this was not viable for them they should not of taken the lease on. They may of had every intention of breaching the rules who knows, and it has now come back to bite them –again incompetence on the part of the management in by book. • They HAVE blatantly breached this notice on countless occasions over the past couple of years - the awsome fest was the final straw for many residents it seems. • If this was a pub, factory, or any other business continually breaking the law it would of been shut down regardless if it was making a profit or not. • BARC it seems have two other circuits that run very effectively on less than the 85 noitce allows Mallory Park. The difference being they are not allowed as many track days there so they bring them all to Mallory Park – is it any wonder that residents get curse word off. • Ironically with all the attantion lately and the full facts of the 85 notice revealed, the very operators that have set up / endorsed the mallory park supporters facebook page are the very ones that had a horrendous track day yesterday in the village on what is a No Use Saturday exept below 55db – so arogant are the management that they have alowed this to go on and stick two fingers up to the law and residents. • It has been documented that John Ward states that the track days are money spinners, this might be true and maybe their downfall, it was said that we had 80+ track days last year. This seems to be easy money for them. Perhpas now they have to work and go and look for less noisy activity to contiue to stay vialble Croft, Thruxton and Goodwood seem to have it sorted, good business sence prevails obviously. For this, my support over the last week or so is NO longer, it might even be that they want to close the track but are blaming the council and residents which will take the heat off them !! who knows with all the false information been fed out they are certainly not trustworthy business men – maybe a change in management would be the answer. You have to ask yourself whether all the derogatory remarks being put out on the internet by the staff of the track is proffessional, this does not bode well for BARC . To make derogatory and indeed mabe incrimidating remarks about certain residents is certainly NOT protraying a professional enterprise. And, need we ask where is the general manager is in all this, sitting in his office making all the bullets for everyone to fire no doubt, If I remember correctly there was not even an appology after the awsome fest. Now they are acting like a spoilt child that has had his/her hands caught in the cookie jar. The meeting last Wednesday was cancelled because Mallory Park did not distribute their new proposals in time and also because of all the resentment whipped up by certain individuals on facebook with threats made to residents it was obviously sensible for all that it did not take place. I’m sorry if this statement has offenden anyone but do your own research it is all on the internet for every one to read. May common-sense prevail in all this and if more effort was put in to comming to an agreement than putting all this stupidity on the internet we might have an amicable solution Some of the above comments might now be our of date but att this stage, MPML have gone into administration not BARC, Mallory Park no doubt will continue but under different management - so before further abuse towards residents shall we wait and see what happens in the next week or so - as they say every cloud has a silver lining and I am sure this will be the case. Well I still say, if you're gonna live anywhere near a racetrack, expect noise. Same goes for railway lines, airports etc the list goes on. Bit different if it was new build, which Mallory obviously isn't. I Suspect those residents moaning about the track weren't living near there at its conception.
Some of you oval racers may remember the hoo har a couple of years back at Mildenhall Stock car track. Usual story. New person moves in, complains about the racing noise. Despite the fact Mildenhall is home to one of biggest active US airbases, and the noise from aircraft etc, said new resident takes to the track to court to try and shut them down, they only race a few times a month at worst. The judge quite rightly so threw the case out saying they should have checked out the area first before buying next door to a race track. But that case cost the owners of the track thousands with little chance of getting that money back.
Another case, my local town has a railway line running through the middle with two or three train an hour. Network Rail has recently announced this will rise back to 6 trains an hour like it was a decade or so ago. Now all those who live near it are moaning about noise. Sorry just don't have any sympathy in these scenario's.
IMO If you want peace and quiet, move somewhere where there isn't any of the above!!!
