When I was a kid I thought id have scalextric for the rest of my life. Thanks to the encouragement of my dad my my collection grew quite rapidly and i couldnt get enough of it. Then I passed my driving test and it went quiet, and then i discovered RC's and it all pretty much died. I still have some track, and all the cars ive ever had. Will i run them again? I'm absolutly sure I wont. Will I sell them? NO. They will sit in their boxes until my nephew is old enough and if he don't want them, he can sell them. The memories in the cars mean i could never sell them, but once he has them he can do what ever he wants with them, even if that means painting the rare stuff! The space it takes up is a major issue these days. As is switching on the Ps3.

ah,the days of setting up the scalextric! A mate and I had suitcases full of it ,and would set it up in each others houses ,covering the lounge hallway, kitchen etc. More fun working it all out that actually using it I think ! Sons played a lot with sets we bought them when they were about 10 yrs old, they're 26 and 30 now, still think its cool, but don't have the time to get all the stuff out.I built some resin bodied cars a few years ago, still have the Anglia I modded with big arches, sitting on a modern scalextric chassis. Spent a fortune, but cant be bothered with it any more.A few yrs ago I actually started to build a huge 1/24th 6 lane lay out on 8 x 4 base boards that joined together,by routing out the grooves.Spent many hours working all the curves out.It was at a time when computer stuff was 'in' and at the time my lot didnt show any interest whatsoever, and I left all the boards in the garden to get damaged by the rain! Being an old git ,nowadays my knees don't take kindly to crawling on the floor so I wouldnt be able to use one anyway!

Sold off all but half a dozen of my slot car collection a couple of years ago to help fund my garage. Made about £6k all together. Some of us older guys were willing to pay hundreds for some of the rarer cars.

Never had a Scalextric when I was a kid but always wanted one, think I was about 19 when I finally got a set - a large box of 2nd hand track and cars. Very rarely use it now but wouldn't part with it. It's all set up in the loft, I cleared it out and boarded the floor with the intentions of making it into my 'playroom', even fitted a couple of car seats, but it's currently under all the normal curse word that gets shoved up there out the way. A few pics working round from right to left.....

The layout just sort of evolved to fill the space available and to use as much track as possible - had to make extra power connectors to the track so it had power all the way round. You can't have a scalextric track without cross-overs and the potential for impact they bring....

Set up looks good.
I've got a set of tourers 2000 in the loft, will probably use it again one day, when I buy a house and there's any room ill set it up.

I've just put in a "Parent Forum" (some extra finding supplied by the PTA) bid for two class sets of "Scalextric in Schools kits. These are a pack of motor, gears, front and rear axles and wheels for a Scalextric car. The students will e tasked with designing a chassis (probably lazy cut acrylic) and body shell (construction of a former then vac formed). These will then be built and raced internally before the best of the two classes are selected to go to the national or regional competition. www.scalextric.com/scalextric-4-schools/The funding got approved, and the kits ordered. We'll be going ahead with the project later in the spring term. I'll keep this thread updated with what goes on.

I was always more into my model railway, but I do remember going on holiday one year to Butlins in Bognor Regis, and they had a room like a slot machine arcade, but it was all coin-slot Scalextric layouts. Obviously the more complex ones got more people on them, I think they were all six lanes or more but with access all around so you could put your own cars back on the track. I came away from that holiday intending to get some track of my own, but never did. Anyone else see that room at Bognor? I'm sure it wasn't as big as I remember it.
I do see quite a lot of track and sets at car boot sales, but it's really the kind of thing that needs more than one player, which isn't always possible as you get older.
I think there used to be a club or commercial room in Crewe with at least one track set up, I remember reading about it in the paper but I never went and I think it's gone now. But that's quite common - there used to be a few model railway layouts where you could just pay to go and have a look around that probably aren't there any more. I know there was one near Blackpool Railway station (North, I think) and maybe another one in Llandudno somewhere. And there was a big layout at Alton Towers, don't know if that's still there. I guess once people have access to simulator games where it's as if you're actually sitting in the car, and you can play against anyone in the world, whenever you want, that's bound to have some attraction.

I think they might have been some up there that were 1/24, as well as some 1/32 stuff on the smaller tracks (or perhaps I was a lot smaller). I can vividly remember the small diameter super dished wheels with fairly tall rounded sidewall foam tyres. Edit: Lots of memories, but alas no pics... www.butlins-memories.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-2668.html

I had the dukes of hazzard set when I were a lad. Mmmm I can smell the overheated motors now. Wish I still had it. You have less control hoarding as a child. As a slight side note I bought my 11 month old son a baby RC car from kiddicare for Christmas and couldn't believe it when he picked the remote up and controlled it instantly. Will keep him trained on that hobby. (Pushy dad)

I do see quite a lot of track and sets at car boot sales, but it's really the kind of thing that needs more than one player, which isn't always possible as you get older. Aha - this is how you solve that. Buy a Scalextric Digital Advanced 6 Car Powerbase (C7042) 6 cars converted to digital, then you can run 6 cars at once. Program 5 of them as drones and then race them! I still haven't set mine up yet but Father Christmas bought me this

Never had my own set but would have really appreciated it and maybe kept it if I did
however a good way to get the missus interested is to constantly let her win, they become hungry for continued success then it gives you a chance to up your game while having a lot of fun, its also good excuse to have a few drinks at the same time.
I think part of its problem with kids is the putting it away part, they dislike putting stuff away!! but are usually eager to get it set up
Another problem is theres more things for kids to be interested in, tablets, pcs, laptops, consoles, mobile phones, not many are "into" cars, or "want to be" a race car driver like we used to be back in the day when there was less to be interested in [before girls]
I totally loved the top gear article on scalextric speed record by james may, and even more so his programme about laying a track round brooklands and it was good to see kids being interested in it, I bet scalextric sold a bit after that

I don't think it's done and dusted, I know I was into it when I was younger (10-15ish), and I'm only 18 now and still enjoying looking and messing with them. Although I have not played with them in years... Me and my older bro used to set up the straights as long as the landing, and put the one end over some books and fire the cars endlessly into a pile of pillows 8) We also used to go to a Sunday club, nothing too competitive, just a bit of fun - the competition stuff was on other days. Being young I had not much free money, so I got myself a Ninco Megane Cup car, and raced it week in and week out for months and months there. I still have it (somewhere), and it looks awesome with all it's battle scars (read wounds..). Infact, the sills are made of paper mache, as is the rear diffuser, and the chassis completely split into 2 parts and has been held together with model glue and paper for years now..brilliant fun! Off for a look now, would love to build myself a proper quick competition car.
